I have a long time friend, who is a very intelligent engineer in california, and he is gay.

Today, in california, the most progressive state, he cannot let the people that he works with know he's gay. Not that big of a deal because he doesn't really want his sexuality to be a topic that's open for discussion. But what if someone sees him at chili's entertaining his date.

Legally, they can't do anything, but you know as well as i do that you can affect things outside legal channels.

Jamaica has been a hot bed of anti-gay violence for many years now. Gay men and women are being beated and/or killed currently. I wouldn't expect the right-wing christian apologists here on DR to know this, because 'Gay News' is not something they read.

We hear about it regularly. month to month, in our news magazines - like the Advocate, or 365gay.com, or on LOGO TV. Jamaica is a Boycott nation for us. we are warned by the State Department NOT to travel there.

Even though she is a 'criminal', for the US to grant her asylum is a legitimate sign of progress, and indicates that with the assholes of the Bush Era being kicked out of power, this country will regain a forward, progressive path necessary to end a regime of hate and all of the crap it has foisted on our citizens.

She will face her appropriate punishment here in the US.

For the rest of the Immigrant Gays and Lesbians who are NOT criminals, this is very good news indeed.
