Seems to me that the entire Republican Party has changed its position on drilling, they seem to think we are too stupid to realize they controlled both the presidency and the Congress until 2006. Now they are trying to convince the dumbest of America that demand rose suddenly since then. It is nothing but a phony attempt to fool voters into thinking they actually even care about gas prices.
Their "base" likes the gas prices high, they get rich because the gas prices are high.

Experts say offshore drilling will get us perhaps a 25 cent per gallon savings - but not until 2012.

What about the 60,000,000 acres under lease? Why drill in deep water when you can do it on land a lot cheaper?

Even if we increase production OPEC will simply cut back theirs making it a moot point.

Why do Republicans pretend that oil pumped from U.S. soil (and U.S. owned land WE own) will stay here?

Whether it's this drilling issue "flip flop" or any number of other changes both candidates have undergone... is it ever appropriate for a candidate to change his mind?

The latest Repukelican Manchurian candidate.

Well, if you can believe the numbers it looks like his surrender of long held principles won him some big money from Big Oil.

There is not a position a candidate can take where big money is NOT behind him.

George Bush I and II, Jeb Bush, Charlie Crist, the Governator, Katherine Harris, and John McCain... whole damn lot of them opposed this brand of offshore drilling until March of this year (interestingly, about the last time McCain went to the Senate).

If they had wanted to sell "energy independence", they could have passed in with 90% approval ratings in late 2001.

Rather, it's like abortion. A political issue that is much more valuable perpetually unchanged and dragged out every four years.

He's just a good enuff politician to see an opportunity to reach a compromise position that does have real value in that it keeps ANWR safe and removes and odious tax break.

Yer boy, McAncient, on the other hand, has switched his position dramtically and at the same time ended up with a shitload more donations bundled from BigOil.
