The Iraq team had competitors in the following events: head lopping, honor killing, camel humping, hot sand running, and turban twisting. They were going for gold.

Still, it's the athletes who worked hard for many years who end up being punished. This is as bad as when Carter banned American athletes from the Moscow games.

Good point about Carter. He fucked up our economy so bad that we had stagnation, high unemployment and inflation at the same time. Economists had to invent a new word to describe it: Stagflation. If you look it up in the dictionary there is a picture of Jimmy Carter standing next to a donkey.

This is kind of a crap thing to do. And then rescind the chance for their athletes to compete under the Olympic flag also? Hasn't Iraq been through enough lately? That's got to be a blow to the burgeoning national pride. Guess the Iraqis can will be pissed at the whole world, and not JUST America.

This is really lousy to do to these Iraqi athletes. Sports should transcend politics.

What really makes this a farce is it would have been the perfect time to show the world how much better off Iraq is now without Saddam .

When Iraq participated in the Olympics before when Saddam was the dictator, if any of the Iraqi Olympians did a poor job, Saddam or one of his two sons would have them executed. This time, had they been allowed, the Iraqi athletes could have gone to the Olympics, done the best they could, and then received a welcome home celebration back in Iraq. Not only that, it would have been a great source of unifying pride for Iraq.

In this case the IOC's decision sucked.

The IOC suspended Iraq for "political interference" in its national Olympic committee which was sacked in May and replaced by a new panel headed by Jaafar.

The Iraqi government had said that the previous Olympic committee was sacked because of "solid evidence of blatant corruption, lack of legitimate transparent electoral processes and accountability."

Leave politics out of the olympics!!! It's a sporting event and sports are about good sportmanship and character.

It would be like one of my fanatastic SEC football teams refusing to play (beat the crap out of) Ohio state again because everybody in Ohio is a ignorant puke.

But since we are gracious in all we do, we will be happy to beat the shit out of them again this year, michigan and penn st too.

And then we will congratulate them for being slightly less pukey than everybody else in the rust belt.

Oh simple. This is a backhanded shot at the Bush Admin. It's an attempt by the other country members to make the world sit up and take notice that Iraq and its government and Olympic Comittee are in a major fucked up state and can't get anything straight.

But in reality, so what? Let them compete .
