McCain's chief financial advisor is Phil Gramm. The same Gramm that is a vice-chairman of UBS Investment Bank. The same organization that is alleged to have helped wealthy Americans hide their money from the IRS through shell companies.

Corporations do something similar to this all the time... if the fine for breaking the law is X, but the profits to be made by breaking it are 100X, then they have an obligation to their stock holders to break the law.

I didn't fully agree, but I really did appreciate such a well-thought response.

But now if these rich folks are forced to pay their taxes they won't be investing that money to create jobs for us here in the US.

Just a question as a devil's advocate, but how does a bank technician know whether or not the income is hidden from US taxes?

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to have an overseas account, and to do so secretly. Just because you have one, doesn't mean you're hiding taxes on the income. Maybe you don't want your ex-wife to know. Maybe you do business in that country, and want to stash reserves there. Maybe you want to squeeze an extra couple of basis points out of the eurodollar deposits. As long as you report the income on your taxes, the US government should have no say in the matter.

So, we'll see.

Are you seriously suggesting that these people weren't trying to avoid taxes??? It says right in the article that some prominent Americans have already said they will plead the fifth amendment indicating that they would incriminate themselves if they testified.

I'm saying there are a lot of motivations to opening up a foreign bank account besides tax evasion. Did it occur to you that not everyone who has a bank account in a foreign country is a criminal?

Are you planning to set up a defence fund for these underpriviledged billionaires RIR? You could run commercials during 'Americal Idol':

I'm just glad that Bush lowered the CApital Gains tax so that these guys could avoid paying less tax.

It was a waste of time to even bring up the point to a group of people who just assume that (1) you're rich, (2) you have a foreign bank account, therefore (3) you're trying to cheat the US taxpayer.

How many are or were members of congress?

If we are going to invade countries that had nothing to do with 911 but are rich in other ways, perhaps we should think about countries that allow the rich to hide their fortunes. The risk vs rewards is very favorable.
