The Centers for Disease Control is now blaming more than tomatoes for the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 1,000. Jalapenos, serrano peppers and fresh cilantro also are suspected.

FTA: In the months since the outbreak was first detected in April, the agency has identified 1,017 people who were infected with the same strain, Salmonella Saintpaul.

Who names an infectious disease after a freakin' Saint?

If the scientist whose idear that was was trying to gain brownie points in the afterlife he's totally doing it wrong.

Jalapenos?

...of DOOM?!

Plus deadly tomatoes and cilantro and seranno peppers?

Wow, like Mexican food wasn't already risky enuff.

Even salmonella free jalapenos have a tendency to hurt.

...Twice.

Be Well.

/Tater o' Doom, entering the DRagon, as ya do,
stage left.

It also inclues serranos and cilantro.

But this is really old news. I sure hope people aren't relying on the Retort for timely food safety updates.

Actually you die; But it'll happen anyway.

T Boone's already left deep drilling's game; and windmills suck, too.

I've stopped cooking with jalapenos. They are too fickle. Sometimes they are sweet as a bell pepper, sometimes they are as hot as a scotch bonnet.

I've found Serranos are much more consistent and actually have a better flavor. No more risk of over or underseasoning food with them as is easy to do with jalapenos.

Crap. Literally.

And please note they did not find one bad tomato. Think of all those poor farmers who had to throw away their crops...and still can't market them due to the scare!

Last night's dinner: Home grown.
Buy a clue.

We had home-grown vine-ripened tomatoes with dinner last night. It was incredible!

Please, people, it's too easy.

This is depressing. All of my favorite vegetables...

Disease strains are named after the city where they're initially isolated.

Dammit. Back to habaneros for me.

"He Drinks Tequila"

Everybody knows her, little Miss Rosa
The queen of the trailer park
Well, she's a hot pepper and you'll never forget her
If you ever let her break your heart
Senor' Jose, works all day
Sweatin' in the red, hot sun
Row after row, everybody knows
What they do when the weekend comes

He drinks tequila, and she talks dirty in Spanish
Him in his sombrero, her in her purty pink jammies
They dance all night to the Mariachis
Till there ain't nobody left standin'
He drinks tequila, and she talks dirty in Spanish

Well, the music is blarin' and the neighbors are starin'
That whole dang trailer is a-rockin'
Jose's a howling', the chihuahua's a growlin'
And Rosie's peelin' off her silk stockings
"Yo Senora, kiss my body, a brasa mi puerta"
"Ay, yi yi yi yi, hoochie-coo, to dal ay nochay"

The Jalapenos are simply carrying the germs that American vegetables won't do.

No wonder there are so many strains named E. calcutta

Shhhh. Don't tell the frighty righties that... they say it cannot be done. What a bunch of retarded defeatists.

ZAT "Last night's dinner: Home grown.'

Mine was also, and is most of the year...right down to the fresh berries for desert.
BUT .... I don't see any reason to be all snooty or superior acting about it. Some people just don't have the time or land .
I would ecourage people to check out container, square foot gardening, lasagna gardens, and incorporating food plants into landscapes.Even fresh herbs on a window sill.

Great ideas!

It takes a "special" kind of idiot to politicize salsa gardens.

differing types of salmonella - for some strange reason, i don't believe it's the vegetables unless they were the ONLY foodstuff left after a lengthy process of elimination. got to go throw out the cilantro - just in case...

Spud, this is for you.

And, June Carter wrote "Ring of Fire"....just FYI

What?
Sam and Ella are scared of Jalapenos, Peppers, Cilantro, and Tomatoes?

Growing tomatoes and peppers is trivial.

And they taste so much better.

726, How can you link someone's political affiliations with where they get vegetables? You are either much more enlightened than most people or much less intelligent. I'd lay a wager on the latter.
