Sales taxes in Chicago are now the highest in the nation, and business leaders are furious. A 1 percent sales tax increase is in effect Tuesday, hiking the sales tax in the city of Chicago to 10.25 percent. By comparison, the sales tax in Lake and Will counties is 7 percent, and in DuPage County, it's 7.25 percent.

With the way government is run in Illinois, I can only see this going higher. I'm estimating 12% by 2012.

Why are dumbfucks buying stuff in Chicago? Ever heard of the internet? How about a drive to another county? If you pay 10% sales tax--you are stupid, so STFU and pay up if you can't figure a way around it.

Ever fucking drove through chicago?? I have 3 times the first time I literally pissed Myself because of the traffic. I mean My God You drive for miles and miles and nothing but Bumper to Bumper traffic Hell it's worse in My opinion than Los ANgelos. If I lived in Chicago there would be no way in hell I'd travel out of the city if I didn't have to. I can only think of two cities thats more screwed up than Chicago. Oklahoma City and Little Rock.

Larry Mohr

"Why are dumbfucks buying stuff in Chicago? Ever heard of the internet?"

Many internet retailers are now charging sales tax. In addition, for most larger items (furniture, appliances) whatever you might save in taxes is more than offset by shipping costs.

"How about a drive to another county?"

Many people in Chicago use public transit. You know - that thing liberals claim to love - except now you're advocating driving around to avoid taxes. On top of that the drive to another county for some could takes as much as an hour each way - and with gas costing what it does, you might not save anything.

Are you actually this stupid?

The Cook County Board President said it was even larger than they needed.

What idiots.

I wish there were someone who could CHANGE this.

unfortunatly there is not.

Makes you wonder a little, just what kind of people Chicagoans elect to do their bidding for them. You know, in the City Hall. Mayor's office. Congress . . .

"Makes you wonder a little, just what kind of people Chicagoans elect to do their bidding for them. You know, in the City Hall. Mayor's office. Congress . . ."

Yeah...they should elect some brilliant minds like the Republicans who fight wars and lower taxes. Borrowing is so much smarter than taxing to pay for things.
Sales taxes are the most regressive of taxes, this will hurt low income folks the most.

Fortunately Chicago doesn't have any low-income folks.

Government crime just increased by one full percentage point. The populations of such a city is expected to decrease more that one percent. To make a large ticket purchase in the city limits is ridiculous. To purchase a car or really anything that runs high enough within the city isn't very smart. When as with most areas, it is common to have outlying suburbs with many major suppliers of just about anything.

Chicago has decided to harm all of the merchants within it's city limits. The amount of taxes collected may well go lower. It is apparent that the city fathers are true geniuses. They have found one single methods to reduce funds for all in both business and government.

For some reason they aren't applying the tax to cars and boats.

"The tax hike applies to everything but groceries, medicine, cars and boats. For larger purchases like furniture or appliances, the taxes can add up."

Danni-

My guess is the auto dealership lobbied the county board (i.e. bribed them) enough to get an exemption. Apparently the furniture and appliance stores aren't making enough money to get enough of a bribe together.

Joe, how about boats though, not that boats are selling with $4 gas anyway.

Many people in Chicago use public transit. You know - that thing liberals claim to love ..per Joe

You mean those people are trapped there?????

So then no one will buy anything--more businesses leave the city and go elsewhere.

The only ones left are the people who work for the gov't--yet there won't be any citizens for a tax base.

OBAMA's FAULT!!!!

Makes you wonder a little, just what kind of people Chicagoans elect to do their bidding for them. You know, in the City Hall. Mayor's office. Congress . . .

I feel the same way about Texans and republicans.

After all, you both elected Bush to an office.

Nice job!

Name the law he broke stupid.

The gang of thieves that run Cook County are all democrats and are the same crooks who helped JFK steal the 1960 election. It would be interesting to see if they have finally out-smarted themselves and this tax hike actuallt causes tax revenues to go down. Remember that Obama was raised on Cook County politics.

The county board president was John Stroger. A few days before the primary election, he suffered a stroke, and all information on his health was kept from the voters.

The machine got the vote out, and John Stroger won, inspite of being hospitalized, and no one know his prognosis. The family wouldn't let anyone around him.

Then it was announced that he wanted his son Todd to be president. A lot of political in fighting took place, but in the end Todd Stroger became president.

Todd stole the office, and now with his tax increase, we have towns that are genuinely trying to leave the county.

I don't think Todd is going to be able to hold the seat when he comes up for reelection.

Let me get this straight.

Liberals LOVE taxes, they never ever vote against a tax increase. And if they can't justify a reason, then it goes back to the liberal play book, which dictates if ALL other reasons to pass a tax fail, then you come out and say that its "to help the children".

Then it will pass.

Then when the mother fucking traitor liberals pass the tax, then they get all up in arms and complain, and whine and find ways not to pay it.

Am I missing something, or are card carrying liberals the scum of the earth, pieces of shit, and are hypocrites "do as I say, not as I do" human garbage.

Kuma

Kuma-
I see you prefer the Republican approach: spend like lunatics, skew tax breaks to benefit the wealthiest, and borrow the money from China for our children to pay back (or maybe make a deal...?)

How many trillions of dollars is the debt now?

"To purchase a car or really anything that runs high enough within the city isn't very smart."

I don't know about other big-ticket items, but if you buy a car in IL/IN/WI, you pay sales tax at the rate applicable to the city in which you reside.

I live in Chicago and work 35 miles out in the burbs. Until this increase, there were only two things I never, ever purchased in the city: gas and cigarettes.

As long as people keep taking the "Dems" side or the "Repubs" side of things and pointing the finger in another direction, the system will remain corrupt. We need to get beyond 2-party thinking and look at what's actually going on, forget about the 2 teams.
I hope with this election, which is drawing more and more people into politics, more and more people will realize that the 2-party system is whack. I'm sick of the kitschy hacks spewing the party platforms at each other. Think for yourselves!

Oh, and regarding the sales tax: Chicagoans need to vote the crooks out and stop this madness.

Wow and I thought it was bad here. Something like 8.5 on prepared food and 7.5 on the rest.

Man when I was a kid tax was 6% and there was no tax on food or clothes. Somehow the city, county and state ran just fine at those tax rates.

I once heard a theory that the total intelligence on earth always remained the same so as population went up people got dumber as individuals, I am starting to wonder, that somehow doesn't seem all that crazy now.

People can only be pushed into a corner so much until they revolt.

Mean while the rich will sit back in their ignorance as a shot whizzes past their ear. The smell of fear is their cologne as the angry public fight for their freedom once again.

In the ladies current course a revolution is only miles away. People have had it. The first shot is fired and it has begun.

People can only be pushed into a corner so much until they revolt.

/end poem

In all seriousness people are angry now with the current state of affairs. Now they want to tax you more.

I'll conclude with this:

How much blood can you get from a stone?
What does a stone have to lose?

I can't wait to see the US when Obama is in charge. More Chicago politics.

This is ridiculous. The value-added tax is a consumption tax, but when confined to a city or small area, it is a regressive tax on anyone who cannot afford to shop in the burbs. Dumb idea by taxaholics who cannot figure out how to balance the books by making wise decisions. Mayor Daley, this reflects on you very poorly.

Does anyone know of any good SUV delaers in Chicago?

Yeah...they should elect some brilliant minds like the Republicans who fight wars and lower taxes.

Danni is just regurgitating her DNC talking points. Thst's why she is struggling with a local (Chicago) issue and trying to twist it into a national matter. I'm surprised that she didn't mention Bush.

Danni, Chicago is a seriously fucked up city. Just like Detroit, Philadelphia, etc.

The common thread in fucked up cities is that they are dominated by Democrats and unions.

ISN'T THIS WHERE OBAMA WAS TRAINED. IF OBAMA WINS THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT. HOLD ONTO YOUR WALET PEOPLE.

New Jersey elected a democratic governor promising to lower taxes. The sales tax went from 6 to 7%. Plus he expanded the sales tax to all services. Is that the way the democrates lower taxes?

Pols tell people that higher cig taxes are to discourage smoking.
Why can't Chicago pols translate...higher taxes = discourage business .
Dems never learn...want less of something ? Raise taxes.

With the way government is run in Illinois, I can only see this going higher. I'm estimating 12% by 2012.

The headline is misleading.

This is a Cook county tax not just the city of Chicago.

Just going out of the city won't get you away from this tax. To do that, you need to keep driving another 30 or 40 miles.

Why are dumbfucks buying stuff in Chicago? Ever heard of the internet?

1. Purchasing goods over the internet, even if the seller does not charge sales tax, does not alleviate the obligation of the consumer to remit sales taxes.

2. Many internet retailers have entered into agreements with the states to collect the sales taxes and the state tax departments are very aggressive in pressuring the sellers to collect the sales taxes.

It's all of Cook County. The villages on the edge of Cook County are going BONKERS. Palatine is holding meetings to seriously consider seceding from Cook County and becoming part of Lake County. I don't blame them! Car dealers in border villages are just tearing their hair out. It isn't that car sales aren't down enough, now they have this idiotic tax to deal with! Thank goodness we live in another county!

By the way, the tax does include (or at leat it included) cars because we purchased a car within the Cook County limits about 2 months ago and that tax was included in the purchase price. It may be been modified since then because, as I said, at that time the car dealerships were going crazy about it. I don't live in Cook County so I cannot say for sure.

Mayor Daley may be a typical Chicago Pol but let me tell you, he has done more to clean up the City than any other mayor in recent memory. Areas that were abandoned industrial slums are now high-end, highly desired real estate property. The Chicago River is being cleaned up daily and is now a tourist attraction rather than an eyesore. Printer's Row is now a highly prized residential address and abandoned warehouses and factories have been rehabbed to become expensive Lofts. The Projects are being torn down and replaced with housing that is at last decent. The City has never looked better and that is a fact. I don't live in the City but I will tell you it leaves New York, San Francisco and any other big city in the United States in the dust in terms of cleanliness and beauty. The Lakefront is magnificent and the parks within the City are safe and clean and family-friendly.

Right... 726
Most states are now eying this source of revenue. North Carolina's Gov. Sleazy-Easly(D) has been working on this for awhile.

how long has it been since some guy tried to get you to do that.....LOL

Not to gloat...but DH eats a great deal of watermelon.

Joe, how about boats though, not that boats are selling with $4 gas anyway.

The weird thing about boat sales(according to my brother a naval architect with Cabo Sport fishers) is that the boats that cost less sell less. The larger high priced boats have a backlog. The fuel use in a large 52 foot boat at high speeds is crazy. The fuel capacity is 1400 gallons and that can burn in less than one day at speed. How about filling that puppy up daily just to show off?

It's not weird Keith.

It's called, The Rich Getting Richer and the Poor Getting Poorer. Or in other words, the Bush Financial Policy at Work!

Same thing is true with the Housing Market out this way. Single Family home construction is at a complete standstill.

Construction of Multi-Million Dollar vacation homes haven't slowed one bit. Resorts are booming around these parts.

The rich aren't hurting folks. Corporations are loving it. It is just us average folks that are taking it in the shorts.

All I can say is, "We Told You So!"

Try listening next time.

Great...now you've just transferred all the power to the career bureaucrats and lobbyists.

Peculiar comment from the guy who loves Democrats and their ever-expanding bureaucracy.

Chicago is a shit hole. Attending functions at the McCormick Center has to be the closest thing to hell. Hate the traffic, lousy weather, pollution, overpriced / overrated restaurants. Never go back.

"Peculiar comment from the guy who loves Democrats and their ever-expanding bureaucracy."

You're an idiot. Government is way too big, and Bush grew it larger than any Dem's wet dream. But don't mistake my disgust for these so-called Republicans as an endorsement of the Dems. About the only good things I've said about Dems are 1) they are closer to correct on gay rights than Republicans, and 2) Clinton's concept of bringing large deficits near to balance was better than Bush's plan of the exact opposite.

OTOH, I'm on record calling the Dems spineless jagoffs, lamenting Reid & Pelosi being the best we can do with a populace of 300 million, and reamed the Dems on lying about "paygo" and "clean bills".

But it's easier just being a partisan hack, and pretending everyone is a nasty ole' Democrat, isn't it?

Manypaths,

You are so correct, we are selling the crap out of multi-thousand dollar fireplaces and gas grills that retail for 4k or so but our 100 buck fireplaces are just sitting around.

The rich could careless about $4 buck gas and double food prices.

Sad thing is so many retailers are not rich and just do not understand the mentality. The ones that do though will be our next group of rich.

"Government is way too big, and Bush grew it larger than any Dem's wet dream"
DAN

Hence the conservative dislike for the repubs .

There have also been some here...that disparage the cons that have walked and run from the GOP.

"that have walked and run from the GOP."

Personally, it's walked and run from me. I don't recognize this big-government, fiscally-foolish, in-bed-with-the-religious party any more.

"Chicago is a shit hole. Attending functions at the McCormick Center has to be the closest thing to hell."

This coming from a guy whose only experience in Chicago is probably McCormick Place and a few shitty tourist trap restaurants. Despite the absurd taxes in Chicago, it's an outstanding place to live (nobody who lives here goes near dumps like McCormick Place, Navy Pier or Michigan Avenue).

I live in Illinois and despise the City of Chicago, they think THEY ARE ILLINOIS. I have never met a group of more condescending, nose in the air, I'm rich, I live Downtown, my shit dont stink so it must be you, group of people in my life, and I have been to LA, and New York!!!! Seriously, Daily is currupt as the day is long, our "child" Governor is a moron who cant get his head around the fact the THE GOVERNOR LIVES IN THE GOVERNORS MANSION IN SPRINGFIELD, and our house and senate are just as bad.

I'm NOT going to the "Taste of Chicago" for all the above reasons and about 3 pages of other reasons aside form the 10.25% of legalized theft. But only people in Illinois or those who keep up with IL politics would care about.

Road maintenance is 5 times higher per mile in Cook County than it is in Milwaukee. The difference is, of course, all of the road worker who only work on election day. Mayor Daley's political machince is not cheap.
