House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

Chavez would be proud.

I heard something on TV about the Chinese easing some of their oil subsidies resulting in oil prices rising 18% for consumers there.

If I heard right, half the people on Earth "benefit" from government-subsidized low cost oil. In other words, there is artificially high demand for oil because those people don't have to pay the market price.

1. But go ahead, keep blaming the speculators for the high oil price. The idea that removing the Enron Loophole will cause an overnight decline of 25% or 50% of the price of oil is ridiculous. I have nothing against transparency in markets, but make not mistake, there are no silver bullets here.

2. Socialism contributes to global warming. If we believe, like Liberals do, that humans cause global warming, it is socialistic policies like artificially low-priced oil that are causing this phenomena, not the evil free market. Under the evil free market people would pay what oil is actually worth and therefore use less of it.

Wonder when Rob will show up to denounce that dishonest headline.

No distortions here Nully.

By the way, oil is down $3 on the China news.

The only distortions here a caused by governments subsidizing the price of oil.

Bullshit. That headline is a flat out lie. There is no Democratic party position that refineries should be nationalized.

"There is no Democratic party position that refineries should be nationalized."

It was mentioned in a Democratic press conference, reply to President Bush's remarks about stopping the offsore oil ban, it was not just an off the cuff remark.

But I understand why your whincing....

It was mentioned by one congressman. Period. That headline is dishonest, but then, what do you expect from Fox News?

Is Bush still pissing away millions of barrels of oil into the so-called "strategic reserve"?

"Unless the people retain sufficient control over those entrusted with the powers of their government, these will be perverted to their own oppression, and to the perpetuation of wealth and power in the individuals and their families selected for the trust."
-Thomas Jefferson 1812

"....corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people until wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war."
--Abraham Lincoln

That old bull shit detector is just buzzing as loud as it can.

Unfortunately, after 7.5 years of Dubya-style conservatism, the Republicans don't have a high moral ground from which to criticize socialism and heavy-handed federal control.

No Child Left Behind, REAL ID, the Patriot Act -- the Republican Party has joined the Democrats in the race to find government solutions for everything.

They've presided over the biggest growth in government in the history of the country.

No, elections are coming up. Got to make it look like you care about everyday America.

On a similar subject to this...

Now that oil is being traded for so much per barrel, is the public getting a bigger cut for any oil extracted from public lands?

Nationalization of oil refineries would be a radical thing and the vast majority of Americans would not support it with gas at $4.00 per gallon. Those long held convictions will evaporate when gas goes much higher. The capitalist ownership of industry is safe in the United States only as long as the majority of the population is able to live in a reasonably comfortable manner, when that become impossible for enough people the all bets are off. Those who hold the power should consider this as they allow their greed to impoverish millions.

Is the US Treasury getting any money at all?

Those who hold the power should consider this as they allow their greed to impoverish millions.

Does that include environmentalist groups and the hardcore left? You know the ones who don't want us to use our own resources? No doubt they can afford six-eight dollar a gallon. Yet the so called impoverished millions allow these groups to run our lives.

hey, if it's working for chavezuela, why not amerizuela?

while we're at it, why don't we start rationing milk?
