In a television and Internet event, ABC News is asking people to help answer perhaps the most important question of our time: What will our world be like over the next 100 years if we don't act now to save our troubled planet?

My predictions to kick things off:

1. We are going to seriously change the way we produce energy real soon.

2. Europe's and Japan's childless generations will cause grave consequences for their national security.

3. Global demographic changes will force major changes in the world.

4. The environment will be forecd to become an after-thought to the top three trends. (Unfortunately.)

in late october, aliens come from another planet, land on the white house lawn.
they speak french.
w. orders an attack immediately resulting in the aliens spraying us with a nuero-electoron-phantom ray effectively turning everyone into a libertarian.
chaos ensues as a write in 3rd party candidate wins the election just weeks later.
president george clooney achieves the task of achieving world peace only months into his term. he accomplishes this by promising that his vp, scalett johansson would do a playboy spread if success followed.

all the best

"promising that his vp, scalett johansson would do a playboy spread if success followed."

That gets my vote.

"The world will have been destroyed for 96 years"

Imagine? But of course, the election would have to be called by the various sec's of state before all the ballots can even be counted.

Leftism dies and Utopia ensues.

One possibility that not one person has advanced yet, and that is "The return of the dinosaurs". Thats right the big lumbering plant eaters that prove to be intelligent. (When judged against any politician(sorry).

Larry,

You used the word 'always' twice in the same sentence.

:-)

Plant eater eater, maybe.

We will be speaking Chinese, eating rice and bugs and pedaling bicycles if we are well off.

The depopulation of Europe is complete, and the Islamic crescent flies on the flags from Oslo to Lagos.
The rest of the world is wildly prosperous, with the population of the United States of America clocking in at 1.25 billion people, and our GDP at 1.1 quadrillion dollars. The Western Hemisphere free trade zone is the world's largest, controlling 75% of the wealth on planet earth. China is a third-world nation, dominated in Asian affairs by India, Korea, Australia, and Singapore--who comprise 15% of the world's market and wealth.

We leftist will always be around to clean up Your right winged messes like always.

Hopefully we will and unfortunately we'll have to...

IOW, Larry, Lefties: The garbagemen, janitors, and maids of society? Someone's gotta do the shit work for the upper class, I guess.

......and the poor will be speaking Chinese, eating less rice and more bugs and pedaling unicycles.....

......if no one turns it around........

.......we will become a bigger Mexico.........

Oops--Herm's insightful post reminded me of another.

In 2108, they will look back in amazement that anyone took Global Warming seriously, and it will rank up there with eugenics, Flat Earth, the 9/11 conspiracy, and the earth-centered universe as among mankind's greatest self delusions. Such things do not deter the UN Special Committee on Redistribution of Wealth from the Western Hemisphere meeting in Bora Bora (yes, there still will be Pacific Islands), from issuing a proclamation that electric cars and personal jetcraft are causing poverty in the Islamic world, and asking for a quadrillion dollars to redress the global imbalance. They receive sympathetic audiences in some liberal enclaves, who slap "No War For Electricity" stickers on their jet packs.

In which The Goat confirms what we've always suspected. Class pretensions.

I was wondering who would be the first. Congrats, Herm.

BTW, surely you aren't silly enough to believe there are not social classes in every country on the planet, are you? I guess social class distincions are something we should keep hidden and people like me who bring it up are just plain evil, right, Herm?

BTW, it was Larry who delegated the lefties to "cleaning up the mess". Bitch at him.

Yeah Boys and Girls it's all My fault. Blame Me for Goatman's words. Hell Why not blame Me for all of the worlds ills.

Blame Me for Goatman's words

No one suggested that Larry. I suggested blaming you for your own.

Larry? You don't want to go through this again...

It's not just you, of course, but it isn't without you.

Christianity and Islam will finally have their little High Noon moment and Jesus will swoop in on his George Jetson runabout to save the day--only to set the timer on the device and bug out. My thumper sister tells me that only 100,000 will be raptured. She's under the impression she's one of them.

This past 100 years was about oil. The next 100 will be about water.

If they really believe it's a finite number, why do they proselytize?

Just look what we have done over the last hundred years.

Yeah, sure. Predict what'll be going on 100 years from now? I can't even predict what state I'll be settled down and living in only one year from now let alone make predictions for the next 99 years. Maybe if I had a crystal ball....

You know Ray I am not the one always declaring I am buying Gold and Silver all of the time. Myself I hope in 100 Years that My being here on earth mattered to just one person. I could give two shits less if I die wealthy or dirt poor. I just want to be remembered that is all. Being remembered fondly is worth more than all of the Gold and Silver in the world.

Let me get out the old crystal ball.

1. Space exploration will just begin to move from exploration to actual communities and colonies in space or on the moon.

2. The first space mission (probes) to the nearest stars will be seriously consider despite the fact that it even with the more advanced technology hundred years or more will have passed before any information is returned.

3. DNA testing and therapies will begin in utero significantly reducing many inherited diseases.

4. We will no longer be using fossil fuels to generate electricity or power automobiles. The crude oil industry will go the way of the whale oil industry of the 19th century.

5. Most electricity will be generated via vastly improved solar cells. Problems of long term storage of electricity will be eliminated by very efficient batteries.

6. People will still be religious and spiritual. Most people, including scientist and the religious, will no longer see the two to be necessarily at odds. New religions will emerge that seek to unite the two.

7. Human beings will be just on the verge of taking a huge developmental step as the merger of computer/ machine and human being becomes more prevalent.
Some will see it as an evolutionary step (the first time a creature has made a self determined one) and, indeed, people will begin to question whether they are losing their humanity to machine.

8. There will be a huge, counter cultural backlash to the above, as large groups turn their back on artificiality. They will form communes and groups--they will be like Amish/Hippies.

9. Centuries of global economies and the trend toward the global village will be our best guarantee of world peace (It will not make sense to bomb your customers on whom your economy depends.)
Of course there will still be small wars and terrorist activities.

10. After the development of alternative fossil fuels, the Mideast Islamic nations will embrace tourism and their own cultural history as the driving force of their economy. As the cradle of civilization and three major world religions they will be promoting their rich historical and religious past. People will follow the routes of civilization from the Mideast into the heart of Africa. They will resurrect the Library of Alexandria; they will become a intellectual Mecca; rivalling their scientific, philosophical importance found in the Middle Ages.

11. After centuries of listening, we will still not detect signs of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. We will start to consider the possibility that we are utterly alone. This will have a profound effect on our collective psyche.

12. People will start to see themselves as citizens of earth even before they are citizens of their
respective countries.

Oh, and Keith Richards will somehow still be alive.

We will be toast, mother nature will have taken over the planet, as she should. And we, as beings will be compost. But why should we even care, not a single one of us on this board will be alive at that time, we will be compost. And I will be happy to be such, I have always said that I will be happy to feed plants, raise insects, feed butterflies, done. Done. My body is going to feed the earth. Now if I can just get that ONE shot of the butterfly before I go....

Ny prediction for the next 100 years:

1. A new ice age will see ice covering Canada to the Great Lakes, Northern Europe and Asia. Ice over Sweden will be one mile thick. Al Gore's great grandson will be screaming about global cooling and low CO2 levels in the atmosphere that could be hindering photosynthesis.

2. With all the new oil discoveries and new ways of extracting shale oil and oil from old fields, oil will be plentiful and gasolene will be $1.00 a gallon. All search for alternative energy will be abandoned. GM will come out with its V-15 500 HP Crossover that will seat 12 people.

3. Because of government policies of one child per family and the ice age, the population of the earth will drop below 1 billion people. Fur from mammals on the ice sheets will be the rage ib clothing. Most people will be on an all meat diet.

I predict the next hour of the next 100 years will be a special on NBC about Tim Russert hosted by Tom Brokaw

In 100 years Dick Cheney's Brain in a Jar will be President of the U.S.

in 100 years:

a dirty kid wearing a loincloth stitched together out of rat pelts climbs in the window of a giant burned out house somewhere in what used to be called riverside county, searching for a lost boomerang. on the wall hangs a large square panel of melted plastic and glass; it takes up most of the wallspace. littering the floor are hundreds of rectangular boxes with twisted plastic disks inside. clucking and twittering with curiosity, he picks one up and wonders who the man with the sawed off shotgun is, tracing the strange characters on the cardboard with his finger. m-a-d m-a-x...

1. The onset of a global cooling trend will fundamentally shift global power, often by the sword. Democratic China, having abandoned communism as unrealistic given the widespread revolts, cedes most of Southeast Asia through a series of gruesome wars and migration. New China buys most of the world's oil supply. Overwhelmingly liberal Hispanic North and South America battle encroachment by the increasingly Asian population of rapidly-icy Canada. The focus on domestic issues pulls funds away from global security concerns, solidifying China's hold on their conquered lands. Abandonment of fossil fuels cripples the military, setting North America up for fullscale invasion from the North. Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia are slowly assimilated by Fundamentalist Islam, who slowly attrite constitutional law for Islam Law.
2. There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than in 2008, but temperatures average 4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler as Mother Nature shows us how dumb we are.
3. The phrase "Gored" no longer means "jabbed by a horn". It's used to describe someone being lied to.

Following an outbreak of a virus which mutated, the earths populations stands at about 5 million people spread across small enclaves across the globe. It takes 200 years before people are confident that it has been wiped out and they can communicate, trade and develop relationships with each other.

Dubya is still down as the wierdeest fcuk ever to be President of the US.

You are taking that the wrong way. I can comfortably predict that the world economy is collapsing into a Great Depression on a scale never seen before. The dollar won't be worth wiping your ass with. It will be obvious to all in the next decade.

I've been trying to warn all that precious metals are one of the few tangible things that will save their asses. My kids and their families will certainly remember me for making sure they are protected. The people on this site mean nothing to me except to remind me how much ignorance and stupidity it takes to destroy a nation.

In 100 years,

1) It is now common knowledge that the Trilateral Commison and the Bilderbergers and the U.N., the European Union and the North American union are now all the same thing working toward the same goal - total control and subjagation of the 'lower class' and as a beast of burden for the 'upper class'.

2) It is also accepted and common knowledge that the goal of life is to preserve life, so all breeding will be monitored and controlled after all proper DNA analysis has been done.

3) Economies and supply and demand are controlled more easily since the earth has finally reached it's goal of de-populating the earth by 80%.

4) The new terrorists are those people that still cling to that old American ideal - the constitution.

THE WORLD will not allow the Chineses to fuck anymore....They make too many babies....

1. The Cubs will win their first World Series in two centuries.

2. Marijuana will still be illegal because science claims, "we still don't know much about the long term effects of pot."

3. Kieth Richards will still be alive (and touring).

4. The Libertarian Party will brag about doubling their ranks (to twelve hundred strong) and now stand poised to take the White House.

5. Spider Man XXXIX set to open nationwide.

6. The Columbia Hybrid space shuttle will voyage to the moon and back using only four gallons of fuel.

7. Dozens tune in for the final episode of "The Simpsons".

It's funny how every time people start listing their idea of how this world will look in a century or so in the future from any point in time, almost no one comes even close.

Anyway, my guess is that we'll either continue on our present political, social, economic, philosophical course and the world will end up looking like that of Mad Max. Or a new generation of real inventions will occur and our planet will resemble nothing like its present.

I am very certain, though, that people who know how to think and analyze and reason and enjoy doing so will enjoy comfortable lives. The rest, the vast majority, will continue bitching at life and focus on the "perceived faults" of others rather than improving themselves. They will be pointing fingers at others, blaming others for their problems, and for all the potential around them, live self-absorbed and meaningless lives.

And the actual physical reality will play the same inconsequential role.

Btw, Grendel, I would bet you that we will establish contact with other intelligences in the universe. Unfortunately, I won't be around to collect.

You work on assumption that there is intelligence on Earth.

I predict every prediction on this site will be wrong except for the one I made about death and taxes.

world will end up looking like that of Mad Max.

Whatever the next decade looks like, you don't want to be without things to barter.

"You work on assumption that there is intelligence on Earth."

There is. The fact that it can't be seen proves it.

"Whatever the next decade looks like, you don't want to be without things to barter."

There will always be things to barter, be they in your possession or that of others. Therefore, I would postulate that the ability to think, reason, analyze is what will become ever more required. All else is collateral.

FYI,

This cynical attitude toward human life is such a cliche.

"I will be dead!"

I'll go you one better.
Everyone in this room will be dead.

MW, Zat, my kids are in 2nd grade, and they very well may be alive. In fact, there's a good possibility that the average life expectancy will be well over 100 years for people who can afford average health care toward the end of the 21st C. Just think -- in our grandparents' generation, they may have lived humbler lives but they probably ate more wholesome foods -- a lot more whole grains, less-processed foods, fewer preservatives and chemical additives, and lots more fruits and vegetables. So they lived into their 60s on average. Today, despite the crap we eat, medicines and medical technology have expanded the average lives of our parents into the late 70s and 80s. If the advancement in cholesterol defeating and diabetes fighting meds and microsurgery to fight heart disease continues, the boomer generation will have an average life expectancy into the mid-80s or beyond. And the children and grand children of the Boomers will likely be really, really old before they expire and pass on.

"my kids are in 2nd grade"

So I doubt they are "in this room."

Or do they blog here, too?

My kids are buying dinner today.

They finished 2nd grade some time ago.

Rightnut's predictions sound more like just another 8 years of Bush/Cheney/McCain would bring, not any 100 years.

My prediction is that in 100 yrs everyone here will be dead and no one will remember. On that note, Happy Father's Day!

Some interesting sh*t here!
