Bush's fault

YEAH!

That's what they get for hating gays.

Terrible news. Must have been a nightmare for those kids as the storm moved in, and for all who were there afterward.

The Storm Prediction Center puts out multi-day severe weather outlooks every day at
www.spc.noaa.gov which are well known to every meteorologist in the country, and even to regular old weather geeks like me. Yesterday there was a moderate risk for that area, with strongly worded cautions - not to mention a tornado watch hours in advance. Maybe camp leaders and such should pay closer attention to such outlooks before they put a bunch of kids in tents in the middle of nowhere.

Still, I don't want to Thursday-morning quarterback the situation too harshly. I know there's a lot of grief and second-guessing going on.

Sodomy in the camp?

Thats what you get for joining the scouts...should have been home playing video games...

These kids died due to avoidable negligence. Parents should sue the hell out of the scouts. Bring that gay hating org to their economic knees, so to speak.

But I guess the parents had an even greater responsibility to check the storm prediction center as well.

As someone whose been dodging Tornado's the last few month's, you can be aware all you want but if that Tornado hits where your at it's over. Also one can develop out of nowhere instantly. You also have Straightline winds that are equally devastating.

Good. Four less hoodlums to clog up toilets at restaurants.

LeeAtwater, that is so offensive.
And yet funny.

LOL... what a dick.

It's a bird, It's a plane, It's a ... Boy Scout????

It's really a tragedy. The Boy Scouts ran into their bunker and then into the bunkbed area of the bunker when they got the warning but I guess the tornado hit them straight on killing four of them -- all were 13 and 14 years old.

Would saying there was a "moderate risk" for a tornado be enough to make you seek cover? Do these "moderate risk" warnings for tornadoes occur so often people may tend to tune them out? How severe do the warnings get? I don't anything about tornados except what I've seen in the movies.

forgot a word:

I don't anything about tornadoes....

I think you forgot the same word twice, chris.

Lot's of things can be turned into jokes but I just can't go there with four dead kids. Terrible tragedy, my heart feels sad for their poor parents and the scout leaders too.

Wow

Some real heartless Pricks here.

I feel really sad for the BSA, they are really one of the last groups that works hard to provide a positive environment and experiences for kids growing up.

The BSA is the realization of family values, or at least attempts to keep kids on the right track and provide leadership that our society is sorely lacking

To think that fathers and sons had to go through such terror is really sad, my thoughts are with them and their families.

Chris -

The 2008 tornado season has been so destructive and so deadly, people need to be taking it more seriously. Yeah, there are a lot of watches and warnings in a state like Iowa, but they're issued because the threat is real.

"Moderate risk" sounds like it's no big deal, but the truth is, for anyone who follows such things, that means a dangerous weather situation is likely to unfold. Your garden-variety t-storm occurs in an area with no SPC-categorized risk. When serious storms are anticipated, certain areas on the U.S. map are marked with the lowest level risk, "slight." If a major outbreak is expected, the SPC issues a "moderate" risk. If an unusually disastrous outbreak is anticipated, the SPC goes with a "high" risk. That usually happens only once or twice a year.

The SPC site gives a full explanation of the different categories and the estimated likelihood of things like tornadoes, hail and high straight-line winds for any given day.
Here's the archived outlook for yesterday at 3 p.m.
www.spc.noaa.gov

Although the potential for tornadoes in exactly the location where the camp was located had been delineated for days, the 3 p.m. outlook was even more direct, including this wording: "AREA OF STRONG TORNADO POTENTIAL MAY EXIST FROM ERN NEB TO WRN/NWRN IA AND SWRN MN..." That was about the same time an actual tornado watch was issued - before the first storm had even formed.

I live in Southwest Missouri and the last 2 months probally 70% of the days we've had some type of warning. I think most people kind of a keep an eye on it. But you always have idoits that don't pay attention. The problem with the warnings is that they go by county. You can be 20 miles away and yet the Storm Siren blows. So alot of the old timers just ignore it. So far we've been lucky but just 2 miles N. my neighbor lost a Barn and shed plus at least 60 large trees from straight line winds and there was no warning put out for that storm yet we were in a Storm Watch. The Storms are unpredictable but they're getting better at Forcasting.

The last time the Tornado Sirens sounded here in My hometown in Central Kansas I got dressed went outside and stood in the middle of the street looking for it. None came My way as usual. I figure if the house is being lifted up then it's time to seek the basement shelter. Until then to hell with the damned warning.

Larry - watch that first step. It's a doozy.

By the way, Larry, Manhattan and K-State got hammered yesterday evening. The campus is closed.

I guess that's east of you.

Yeah it's on our news constantly now CBOB. I live 40 Mies Northwest of Wichita Kansas so it's aways away from Me. I ain't too worried about Tornadoes. I am too fugly to be "Picked Up" anyways. LMAO

Larry Mohr

That's exactly what THIS guy said, Larry.

See cbob that is Your problem. You are comparing an oblong cow to a more rounded human(Me) I figure if the tornado gets near me My roundness will counteract the pull of the tornado which in turn make the tornado go around Me sparing My life. At least I THINK so.

I will never forget the gay Catholic priest I met in Australia with his boyfriend & the priest showing his recent German best seller book he gave the copyrights to Boy Scouts of America as humor during the gay flap many years ago ~ in Iowa?

Larry, and I know you've been told this before, but... you are a trip.

I'm all for Homosexual rights, but its an adult issue that should be outside the scope of the scouting experience. These are Kids!

bj's don't count as scouting experiences then?

"bj's don't count as scouting experiences then?"

Oh, they're scouting experiences alright. But you have to be in the Girl Scouts to earn the badge. It has an interesting design, so earning it is pretty much expected these days: A Boy Scout with a Smiley Face.

I was at the Marriot in Minnetonka, Minnesota last nite & there was a tornado (entity?) warning while I was hanging out there...which didn't deliver as promised.

Then early this morning ~ I woke up noticing this old bearded fellow with a flash light ~ named Uncle Phyl! ~ cleaning up a mess 10 feet away in my bedroom.

I was rather startled & turned on the lights & he was gone.

That's what Boy Scouts should be about...telling ghost stories & what nots while scouting for beavers via coon hunting:>)

and flying kites, too

Well, boy scout leaders are use to fucking the boyz - so I guess fucking them over by being stupid was the next best thing.

The level of stupidity in this thread is rising faster than flood waters in Iowa.

I'm with you, Repug. Geez, people.

Is the left wing using this for Political Gain yet?

Its a matte of time. I bet they already are somewhere.

Anytime anybody "good" dies, they race out to make points instantly for political gain.

Every time.
