Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hr. and 7.5 hr. a night live the longest, according to Daniel Kripke, director of research at the Scripps Clinic Sleep Center. "We can prevent a lot of insomnia and distress just by telling people that short sleep is O.K.," said Kripke. "We've all been told you ought to sleep 8 hr., but there was never any evidence."

I sleep about 6-7 per night. Yeah, I'm awesome!

LOL... I used to love sleep...

If I do not get my required 7.5/8 hours per night I am the nastiest, grumpiest, most vile, evil creature that has ever walked this earth (just ask my husband :)). If I have to go on (say) four hours of sleep I feel physically sick. I went 36 hours without sleep one time (thanks to the IRA) at the end of the 36 hours I was a basket case, and it really wasn't a good idea to dress me up and put me in front of visiting dignitaries, cause you know, loose lips and all. 7/8 hours for me other than that I am a nasty piece of work, not apologizing, just saying.

dead man walking here--shit

ROB, I'd think the key for you is to learn how to sleep with your eyes open and type while you're pretending to work.

As long as those eyes are open who could accuse you of being anything but the perfect hard working employee (LOL)

LILBRIT

I'm like you. 7.5/8 is what I really need to feel rested. Any less and I'm draggin' behind. Guess everyones sleep requirement is different.

I have found that my cutoff is 6.5. Six is insufficient. I'm not as sharp and I tend to fail to complete

...certain tasks.

LOL... I used to love sleep...

How is yer li'l bundle o' joy doing?

On Topic?

Spud usually gets about 4.5 hours of sleep a night.

It seems to suffice.

Be Well.

Nothing beats Melatonin dreams! Go you a drug store, or Walmart vitamin section to find a bottle of 3mg. My wife and I have been taking them every other night for years and the sleep and dreams are great. Specially nice is that if you wake up in the middle of the night it's easy to fall right back to sleep.

Do people live longer because they sleep 6.5 to 7.5 hours per night or do people who are destined to live longer need less sleep, say 6.5 to 7.5 hours. Think about it, it's very profound.

five to seven hours at night with a one to three hour nap in the daytime. people will sleep when they need it. period.

Einstein and Buckminster Fuller never slept an entire night in their lives, but chose to just take a short nap every two hours.

So just how is Ladybug doing these days? She's around 8 months old now?

I like 8 hours
Usually get 7
Can function if I have to on 5 or 6.

Depends on whether I'm reading Dethspud or BushLoverTwo...

After college, I survived on 4 hours for 3 or 4 years. Mostly that was due to old habits carrying over from college. Beer. Pot. Naked women. Who wants to sleep?

Now, Monday through Friday, I'll sleep 5 or 6 hours a night. I get up every morning at 5:30, make coffee, bacon and eggs or have some fruit.

During the weekend. Saturday and Sunday, that is. I'll sleep for 5 or 6 hours in the night then take a 2 or 3 hour nap.

If I ruled the world, we'd adopt a modified system like the spanish.

You'd come in to work around 9 work for say, 4 hours, take a 2 or 3 hour lunch. That would give everyone enough time to go home, take a nap and grab a bite to eat. Then, come back to work for another 3 hours to finish up the day.

5 1/2-7 1/2 hrs. is what I normally get, and I used to think that was too little. Now they say it's just right. Wow.

The doctor told Me I should be getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night. 9 Preferably.

Larry Mohr

My own anectdotal evidence suggests that the optimal amount of sleep varies depending on the individual.

As I've aged I have required less and less sleep.

In fact, I have found that I get restless when I try to sleep too long - for the most part.

Now that I work nights, my sleep during the week consists of 'naps' - A couple of hours at night and a couple in the morning. It works until the end of the week. Come the weekend, I need a bit of a sleep marathon (8 hours uninterrupted) to catch up.

The greatest sleep marathon of my life occurred at the end of my Sophomore year in college. I slept a total of 9 hours over a period of the 4 final days of that year. Going further, my awake time consisted of hard-core studying, taking exams and packing up all of my shit. During the drive home, which lasted a little over an hour, I nearly dozed off about 10 times. When I finally got home it was just shy of 3 PM. I was so exhausted that I didn't even bother to unload my car. I went up to my bed and collapsed. 12 hours later I awoke, groggy as hell - the only reason I woke was that I had to take a major piss. I did so, and then went back to bed. I awoke 5 and 1/2 hours after that, feeling very refreshed. It was the most restful stretch of sleep in my life. I tend to toss-and-turn a bit when I sleep. Not so on this occasion. Over the total 17 and 1/2 hour period, both times I woke I was in the exact same position that I was in when I fell asleep.

For me, 6.5 hours is good. Even on the weekend, I find myself waking up at the same time. My body clock is so firmly engraved that I quit using my alarm clock during the week. Before I stopped using it, I would usually wake up, roll over and look at the time, and it would be about one minute before the clock was set to alarm.

just 10 more minutes....

Same here, dude. I try to sleep longer, and my body says, GET YOUR ASS UP, IT'S WAKEUP TIME. Which for me is about 5:50 a.m.

Hey Chris... just over 7 months now... Its amazing to watch this little person grow and advance. Although she doesn't yet associate it to us, she is saying "da da" and "ma ma," which is really cool... Stuggling to get up and crawl, but in a couple weeks, I'm guessing there will be no stopping her... My favorite thing to do is just sit her in the middle of the living room floor on a blanket and watch her play with her toys... impossible not to smile at that...

Sleep is tough, if anyone here has any advice or been through this I'd appreciate it, but basically she won't sleep unless swaddled. If she's not wrapped up tightly, she'll flail her arms and legs until she wakes herself up... its really frustrating, especially since now she has the strength to bust out if she really wants to... add onto it my wife's redonkulous schedule (and the harrassment she gets on a daily basis), and I'm at about 2-3 hours of sleep (total, not continous) on weeknights... HOORAY!!!

"I would usually wake up, roll over and look at the time, and it would be about one minute before the clock was set to alarm."

Concur. That's been my m.o. for about 30 years.

Thenks for the update on Ladybug.

Check out this blog I linked below. Seems a number of parents have the same problem you do. Some of suggestions on how they handled it.

"How can I get my baby to sleep without swaddling"

Maybe you'll get some sleep soon!

Thenks = Thanks

Really appreciate it Chris!!!!
