McDonald's says it has stopped serving sliced tomatoes in its restaurants over concerns about Salmonella food poisoning linked to uncooked tomatoes. The chain halted their use as a precaution until the source of the salmonella is known.

Alfredo's won't make any Margherita pizzas right now either. Bummer.

Yep.

Thats what Larry tells the bound and blindfolded hookers. Then he fires up the chainsaw.

They don't want you getting confused between the salmonella from the tomatoes and the e-coli from the burgers. It's complicated.

This is corporate political bull shit at its best.

They know where the problem is coming from.

Money,

The corporation still knows where it buys its tomatoes from.

Now try again.

www.fda.gov

um do we really import that many tomatoes from Israel, Belgium, and the Netherlands?

Wow who knew.

Big deal so you get the shits for a week, eat some yougurt and move on with life.

Money,

Sure they do but they might buy from a distributor who has them from hundreds of producers. Tracking that back could take a while, especialy if it is an importer who imports from hundreds of places just like himself. You could be talking about 1000's of possible starting points.

You say Tomato I say *Blech* Salmonella!!

McHating this!

Be Well.

/Gotsta get now
stage left.

You say tomato-I say-"get the hell outta my way! Do not impead me from getting to the toilet-we'll BOTH be sorry....*yech*

Well-I would say that-if I had the time...unfortunately-I'll be too busy on the can-spewing from both ends......

The only healthy thing in the average fast food joint, and they find a way to fuck it up.

I was at Sweet Tomatoes and......yep, you guessed it, no tomatoes.

There was one loud mouth guy in line who was complaining to some of the staff about not having them even though they have tomatoes in their name.

I pointed out to him the salmonella scare and he apologized. I was actually surprised he apologized to them because he seemed like he was probably a full time asshole.

The FDA guy was stammering all over the place today on the news. The U.S. was suppose to put "country of origin" on ALL our meat and produce back in 2003.

Thanks to corporate ownership of the White House for the last two terms, the date initially set to implement the "country of origin" law (back in 2003) has been extended TWICE in the last eight years. Hence, we still have no clue as to where these tomatoes were grown (nor what kind of water was used to fertilize them). Same way with the rest of our meat and produce. Remember that the next time you give your baby or toddler their fruit juice and vegetables.

Enjoy your next hamburger with all the trimmings.

LiLBrit -- why don't you start a thread (and keep it going weekly!) on how to grow tomatoes and the other things you mentioned you grow in your yard that's edible. I think I'll start my own "survival garden." (grin)

I remember the spinach scare last year, Il Fornaio wouldn't even sell spinach pasta. No kidding.

There was one loud mouth guy in line who was complaining to some of the staff about not having them even though they have tomatoes in their name.

The Acme Oyster House at the New Orleans airport has oysters on the halfshell on the menu, but after traveling there every two weeks for four years, I've yet to be able to order any.

mcdonald's? are thinking people still eating there?

mcdonald's? are thinking people still eating there?

No. They stopped that years ago. I didn't even know they put tomatoes on the things they call hamburgers. I thought it was just rehydrated onions and pickles.

If I was into fast food I would have to carry some dehydrated tomatoes in My wallet much like teens carried around condoms. You know this trying to find the source is such bullshit. If they can tell that cow A173 came from lot so and so You would think they could tell which tomatoes came from where. Hell if need be dye the SOB's a certain brand color for each farm. Or hell tattoo the farm logo on the tomatoes. Fucking stupid asses.

Larry Mohr

The tomato pickers shit in the fields.

/you know what is worse? Super Aids! One teaspoon of Super Aids and you'll be dead in a week.

I don't know why but I miss seeing ayds in stores.

Larry

Again, this is what happens when you outsource your food supply to an unregulated third world country.

All the corporate fucktards think this is not a problem. Good for them.

Buy local.

Buy local.

Not everything can be bought locally. Also, not enough of everything can be bought locally. Besides, the source of the tomatoes may very well be local, just as was the tainted spinanch last year.

Typical liberal no-thought knee-jerk response.

The source of the tomatoes responsible for the illnesses in at least 16 states has not been pinpointed.

I'm hoping for tomatoes out of my garden this month. They're the best. Anyone else getting tomatoes yet?

Soon,very soon

Anyone else getting tomatoes yet?

Just put my plants in last weekend. Wanted to do it Memorial Day, but it was too damn cold.

Good thing is that the plants already have flowers on them and with the extra week to warm the soil they won't be set back too badly from the transplant.

Not everything can be bought locally. Also, not enough of everything can be bought locally.

At one time it could be. But globalization put local farmers out of business to save .10 per tomato. Of course, you get what you pay for.

I can grow a lot of what I consume and the rest I can pick up at the local farmers market. You pay a little more but what you get is damn fresh, not week old crap. What I cannot buy I can do without until it comes back into season.

This year I tried some different heirloom varities than I have grown in prior years.

726,
I've thought about planting heirlooms. Do they really have an old time taste?

No tomatoes yet, here in SanJose, but a couple of flowers...The weather has been cool, its just in the last couple of days its started to get a little warmer.

Can't wait :)

igmoramus, eat a locally grown heirloom tomato and you'll never touch the grocery store crap again. There is that much difference.

I've got 1" tomatoes. plus corn 4" high,peppers 4" also...ops.in southern oh.

Pulls Sliced Tomatoes

I realize it isn't one, but that sure sounds like a euphemism to me...

The weather has been cool

Must be nice, I'm worried that my plants will all die if we don't get a break from the heat soon. We have been over 100 for a week now. Some rain would be nice too, but at this point I'll just take a break from 100 deg days.

At one time it could be.

You live in fantasy world. "At one time" you could buy fresh produce a few weeks of the year, and spend the rest of the year eating glop from a jar or can, plus flour and bacon

Your other fantasy is shopping at the 'farmer's market.' They buy from the same distributor as the grocery stores, and it all comes from the same places, like California, Texas and Florida

Heirloom veggies, are indeed, healthier and better tasting.

Florida's tomato industry is in "complete collapse" and $40 million worth of tomatoes will rot unless federal regulators quickly trace the source of a salmonella outbreak and clear the state's produce, an industry official said on Tuesday.

"We probably have $40 million worth of product we can't sell. We've had to stop packing, stop picking," said Reggie Brown, executive vice president of the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange.

NC ... Many of my Sub Artic Plenty are turning now. I have also had some fried green.

I start my plants in our small greenhouse and use wall-o-water protectors to jump start my season.

It's WAR!
