Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

For the first time in history, a sizable and growing number of U.S. combat troops are taking daily doses of antidepressants to calm nerves strained by repeated and lengthy tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The medicines are intended not only to help troops keep their cool but also to enable the already strapped Army to preserve its most precious resource: soldiers on the front lines. Data contained in the Army's fifth Mental Health Advisory Team report indicate that, according to an anonymous survey of U.S. troops taken last fall, about 12% of combat troops in Iraq and 17% of those in Afghanistan are taking prescription antidepressants or sleeping pills to help them cope.

Hey if it helps the troops make it through the day, then go for it.

if it helps the troops

I don't see it as helping them to hand them some pills and send them back out on the line. Considering the under-diagnosis of PTSD, and the fact that some guys won't complain or take medication, this just an indicator of how bad things really are in our military.

The Germans fed their troops methamphetamine to keep them going during the Blitzkriegs. Until Nixon started the War on Drugs the Navy had Black Beauties in every sick bay loaded in salt tablet dispensers. Bump, bump, take two. Considering the side effects of Prozac I'd say it's just another form of speed.

These guys really need a rest.

Spud remembers from the time of the friendly fire bombing that killed 4 Canadian troops in Afghanistan (The Tarnak Farm Incident) the admission at some point that the guys in the planes who bombed the Canucks were being fed amphetimines in order to stay awake over prolonged periods of time.

Guess there's the "War On Drugs (tm) and then there's the WAR (on drugs).

I presume that they still may not go into battle if stoned. But sedated, happy pilled to the eyeballs to soften the ugly reality of inhuman non-coms: that's another story. herm

Here's a great anti-depressant for our troops -- a one way flight back home to the U.S.

Anything to avoid drafting, or even promoting the enlisting of Young Republicans. They've already volunteered for the "Other Priorities Army, Don't ask us to pay for this war Division", I guess.

Young Republicans are a bunch of chickenhawk pansies with an epidemic of "bad backs"

an epidemic of "bad backs"

Not everyone is so fortunate as to be born with a giant pimple on their ass.

I will always remember when Chris Matthews was doing his "college tour" show at a university where the majority of the students in the office were conservative supporters of the war. When he asked how many intended to make the military a part of their future the lack of hands up was amazing and revealing. Far too many Dick Cheneys in America today. It is probably too bad that Cheney wasn't drafted, it would probably have given him a totally different perspective, we probably wouldn't be in two wars right now. Of course Cheney might have ended up one of the 58,000 lives wasted by a different war monger.

Bush's fault

How about an anti-depressant for the economy?

How about no anti-depressants, and we tackle what is depressing everyone and solve the problem, thus not needing any anti-depressants?
