Raw Story: The evolution of John McCain's position on warrantless wiretapping and executive power gives critics a potential one-two punch against the presumptive Republican nominee: the ability to paint him as "McSame" as President Bush and as a flip-flopper.

EFF's Kurt Opsahl asks whether the telco lobbyists in McCain's inner circle have helped push him away from his previous views.

The strong connections between the telecom immunity lobbyists and the McCain campaign raise serious questions about McCain's about-face on warrantless wiretapping. As recently as November 2007, McCain told CNET News (emphasis added):

"When companies provide private records of Americans to the government without proper legal subpoena, warrants, or other legal orders, their heart may be in the right place, but their actions undermine our respect for the law."

Flippity . . . floppity

Old man McSame just proves himself unfit for command more and more every single day.

Only way Dubya could have circumvented the US Constitution is to suspend it in it's entirity. What a fucking disgrace He is.

Larry Mohr

Next to an old fart in a thong, the next most ridiculous thing is an old fart in flip flops.

Which legislation will he flip-flop on next?

Depends on the size of the check coming in, I'd say.

I thought this was something the new Democratic Congress promised to do something about.

This is going to make it harder for him to dodge the McSame label!

A plus towards voting for Obama IMHO.

McSame, on the surface comes off as a maverick but is it something new or just running off at the mouth?

His rep as a maverick is more image than substance. Push come to shove and McSame is just another cold blooded heart of stone republican!

I think the McSame label is valid.

I think I see Mcsame's campaign stratergy-stand firmly on both sides of every issue. It beats straddling the fence and he's bound to remember at least one of his positions on any topic.

and if any of his supporters get into a political discussion, they can agree or disagree with their opponent, thus, like GWB, avoiding combat.

I think Candidate McSame should have a Townhall debate with Senator McCain.

Senator Mccain to candidate McSame: " I knew John Mccain, I was John McCain, and you sir, are no John McCain."

Vote McSame as Bush's 3rd term
or
Vote Obamessiah as Carter's 2nd term

McSame: Pandering flip-flopper

He took an oath as an officer and a gentleman to "uphold and defend the Constitution of The United States of America".

Perhaps old age is taking it's toll

Of course he supports warrantless wiretaps. So did Lincoln, McKinley, Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, both Bushes and Clinton. This is not news.

so did Lincoln, McKinley...

Since when did Americans have phones when Lincoln was president? Did I mess something in history class? I thought the telephone was only invented in 1875. It was not widely available to most Americans until well into the 20th century.

You have some evidence to support your assertion that warrantless wiretaps were supported by all the presidents you listed? Warrants have been required to listen into phone conversations since the Supreme Court ruled them constitution in 1928 - provided there was a warrant to do so.

Why wouldn't he back warrantless wiretaps???

John McCain wants to be an "Emperor" just like Dubya Bush and you can't be an Emperor if you don't own and control all the POWER!!!

BOORTZPAL

I wasn't being snarky with you there.

But, here in America we pass laws - like the FISA law designed exactly to address this issue - and then the President chooses to ignore and break the law. Bad.

If we've fought wars to protect our laws and way of life why should someone be allowed to flaunt them when there's a clear mechanism (FISA) specifically for granting warrants. They currently authorize 95% of all requests.

Ever heard of the telegraph?

"Ever heard of the telegraph?"

"Samuel Morse
While a professor of arts and design at New York University in 1835, Samuel Morse proved that signals could be transmitted by wire. He used pulses of current to deflect an electromagnet, which moved a marker to produce written codes on a strip of paper - the invention of Morse Code. The following year, the device was modified to emboss the paper with dots and dashes. He gave a public demonstration in 1838, but it was not until five years later that Congress (reflecting public apathy) funded $30,000 to construct an experimental telegraph line from Washington to Baltimore, a distance of 40 miles.

Six years later, members of Congress witnessed the sending and receiving of messages over part of the telegraph line. Before the line had reached Baltimore, the Whig party held its national convention there, and on May 1, 1844, nominated Henry Clay. This news was hand-carried to Annapolis Junction (between Washington and Baltimore) where Morse's partner, Alfred Vail, wired it to the Capitol. This was the first news dispatched by electric telegraph."

I passed my code test at the Dallas FCC office in 1964.

I was 14.

Rode the bus to Dallas.

I see your point, BOORTZPAL

But, I hope you got mine:

We've passed laws and created a court (FISA) to deal with these foreign calls. They grant 95% of the requests. Domestic wiretapping has required a warrant since 1928.

I don't want any president, GOP or DEM, flaunting the law or saying they're above the law. If we start going down that road democracy is in jeopardy.

More delusions from Zat why am I NOT surprised.

see Kansas.

all we are ...

never mind

Rent a brain.

If you speak Matlab you may survive.

Of course we're just the dust, Larry.

That's why I'm here.

Muons decay into TWO neutrinos.

What fun.

Didn't Congress passed the law to wiretap without a warrant??

Pretty much did....

So what is the beef?

Obama would approve too...he is a liberal and personal freedom is one of many things he likes for the American people to lose.

You know taxes and expansion of the gov't and such.

You know taxes and expansion of the gov't and such.

The 2000-2006 GOP controlled Congress holds the record by a million miles in the expansion of government. Sad thing is what do we have to show for it?

They doubled the size of our budget and national debt.

China's loving the shit out of that and building their military with our trade deficit and debt service payments.

PS Ronald Reagan holds the record for raising taxes in the last 30 years. Every year but his first year in office.

The biggest growth in government since the Great Society was under librul commie Demoncrats Reagan and Bush the Lesser.

Reality-it's not a friend of the Right. 60% of the Federal debt created under those commies and Comrade Bush the Morer.

"I think I see Halfrican's campaign stratergy-stand firmly on both sides of every issue. It beats straddling the fence and he's bound to remember at least one of his positions on any topic.

and if any of his supporters get into a political discussion, they can agree or disagree with their opponent, thus, like Billy Jeff, the draft dodger."

There, Northguy, I corrected it for you!

John Kerry was a "flip-flopper". John McCain is a straight-talkin' maverick. 'nuff said.

"The biggest growth in government since the Great Society will be under the Halfrican Marxist's regime, if he gets elected...

Reality-he's's not a friend of Liberty or of the Constitution, either."

Hey Northguy, I corrected that one for you, too!

"BHO: The Pandering flip-flopper

He took an oath as an officer and a gentleman to "uphold and defend the Constitution of The United States of America".

Perhaps his youth and inexperience are contributing to him continually embarrassing himself, as we will see him do multiple times in the next four months. After only serving 143 days in the Senate before kicking off his Presidential campaign, I guess he really is "green" behind the ears and lacking the essential experience needed to lead the free world."

No problem, American Unity, I was happy to correct your errors, too!

Is that Halfrican perjorative really necessary??

Larry Mohr

BTW, American Unity, what will unify America?

Perhaps the realization that we ALL should strive to adhere to our Constitution, meaning, a federalist way of life/freedom/government? Smaller central government, less taxes? Another Boston Tea Party?

What is your solution? A vote for.....who?

"Is that Halfrican perjorative really necessary??

Larry Mohr"

Why, no, Larry, it isn't necessary. Was your reply necessary?

Does it bother you, or are you just drawing attention to it or to yourself?

B-B-B-B-BUT.... Michelle said, "Whitey".
