General Motors Corp on Tuesday said it was closing four truck plants and could sell its Hummer brand to cut slow-selling trucks and SUVs from its lineup in response to higher gasoline prices the automaker now sees as a permanent threat to its business.

What was funny as I watched this announcment this morning on CNBC was the fact that at the same time this announcement was made, the price of oil dropped.

Geez who would have thought that a single person would not want to drive a 6,000 pound truck at $4 per gallon?

Who knew?

More brilliance coming out of Detroit!

Yeah, GM is a little behind the curve on this one, but at least they are catching up.

How will electric cars work out this summer?
Every year you hear the various cities plea to cut electric usage to fight brown outs. If nothing changes, how will electric companies meet the demand?

Last time I checked, you don't drive them around with giant extension cords attached.

People could re-charge them in the evening when demand on the grid is lower.

How ironic. The oil companies doing what ELF could not.

Welp there goes Monica's Career.

The hummer could be a practical vehicle if you filled it with people and equipment, like a bus, get it! One person driving it to work never made sense even with 1.00/gal gas. The same with SUVs.

Follow this logic now: If the above statement is true, then people who commute with SUVs and Hummers are just as crazy as people who hate Hummers and SUVs and think they should not be built. (wacky liberals)

President Carter in 1978 ask the Automobile Industry to help in our much to much dependancy on foreign Oil. By making more fuel efficient automobiles an he asked the American people to conserve.

Well the American People did not, an the Auto Industry did not. Had we all taken this seriously in 1978 we would have had a 30 year start on this problem. Just maybe we would be like Brazil, who did something about it back than an now doesn't import one drop of Oil. Or like Iceland which took those warnings seriously an today doesn't import one drop of foreign Oil.

WAKE UP IT NOT TO LATE!!!!!

Hey AuntieSocial if You are so obsessed with Me let's make it official. Tell Me where You live and we can go down to the CourtHouse and get Married then You can then become Mrs Larry Mohr. Jesus Christ already.

If there was a "Fuckin' Hilarious" flag, you'd get it.

Little man's syndrome hits hard with $4 per gallon.

To qualify you gotta have at least, a NASCAR ball cap, 4X4, V8, loud exhaust, jacked up, pickup (Ford chevy or dodge).

And they throw prostitutes in jail for selling hummers...sheesh..Must be the Gov contract on the hummers aren't paying off as they used to...

...but who would buy this dinosaur? Oh I forgot, Blackwater...

As painful as it is at the pumps, high gas prices are doing, what Jomama pointed out, Americans would not do. So, in that respect, it's actually a good thing to help reduce our consumption. On the other hand, it would be nice if the oil companies weren't reaping record profits from all of this, and that more of the money was going back into our infrastructure and mass transit to further ease dependency.

My father has one of those stupid H2s. It really is ridiculous. I once parked my old Toyota Tacoma 4x4 next to it and it looked tiny; even the Hummer wheels and tires are colossal. That being said, I hate what the Hummer stands for, but to ride in it is akin to being in an M1 Abrams. The funny thing is, my dad is retired, and has had the thing for over three years and only put about 4,000 miles on it. When all the old ladies at his hangouts give him grief, I tell him to just say that his carbon footprint is many, many times smaller than theirs (then do a V8 burnout). He wants to get rid of it now, but there are no takers.

Anyone who drivers a Hummer is a complete fool. Unless you're driving one with a .50 cal on the roof. The sad thing is I have to have a 4x4 for my work and rec. My older Jeep barely gets 18 mpg if I baby it and dont run the AC.
The best option is a standard shift Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl 4x4 and it only gets 22 so they say.

I like the civics and corollas but they're just dont have the room. And besides you cant even hop a curb in one.

Hey I remember 15 years ago when a single man who lived in the city, never did a lick of hauling offroading or construction bought a Dakota 4x4 because he thought it would look cool.

Then it cost him $30 to fill it up after one week of driving (back when gas was 1.29 per gal) and all I heard in the office was him bitching and moaning about it. What a tard.

On the other hand, it would be nice if the oil companies weren't reaping record profits from all of this, and that more of the money was going back into our infrastructure and mass transit to further ease dependency.

What a fantasy. Infrastructure improvements don't buy votes. The politicians have other priorities. At least with oil company profits, we can be sure they will spend the money on the infrastructure needed to keep us supplied with oil.

And besides you cant even hop a curb in one.

Best reason I have ever heard for owning a 4x4.

Are you a rocket scientist?

Men with small dicks are going to be in mourning.

But Corvette sales will go up.

Men with small dicks are going to be in mourning.

I didn't even know you were sick.

I'll be sad to see the Hummers go. They made it so much easier to spot the conservative pinheads.

It really is a shame that the only reason most Americans will buy a vehicle that gets good mileage is because the price of gas makes owning anything else unaffordable. It would be a better country if we conserved energy and resources because we cared about future generations. I believe my grandchildren will someday think back to when our generation bought and drove Hummers just because we thought it was fun or something and think what a bunch of greedy, immature, non-adults our generation really was. One thing for sure the Boomer generation will never be called anything like "The Greatest Generation," more likely "The Greediest Generation."

One person driving it to work never made sense even with 1.00/gal gas.

Sure it did, fw. It said "I am better and wealthier than the rest of you and y'all can go f*ck yourselves and watch the hell out because the odds of you dying in a car accident with me are all but a guarantee."

One thing for sure the Boomer generation will never be called anything like "The Greatest Generation," more likely "The Greediest Generation."

Sorry that's so true, danni... Actually has been true for over 40 years now. But what can you do to convince the nation's largest demographic group to take a look in the mirror?

Raise gas prices to $4.00+, seems to be working.

Why do you libs relate everything to cock size? Is it because you don't have one or the balls to drive one?

Yeah, I think that's actually making them look at their wallets. That's greed too, not environmental consciousness.

Anybody remember Cal Worthington and his "Dog" Spot (actually a tiger).
He had a humungouse dealership in Phoenix that sold RVs and converted vans in the late 70s. Acers of them.

Then one morning, the lot was empty-he had gone under. It was wierd driving by and seeing all that nothing. Not a lot to do with hummers, just gas prices.

"Why do you libs relate everything to cock size?"

Their national liberal ranking is directly correlated to how big of a dick they are. Un fortunately to become a bigger dick they think they have to act like one so they hang upside down till all the blood runs to their heads. At some point permanent brain damage occurs, this leads them to the belief that other, non-dicks can be judged in the same way. There is rumor that some of the less dicky dicks in the party are trying to change the system from a measure of dickieness to a level of asshole-ility in effort to raise the cumulative intelligence by 88%.

If nothing changes, how will electric companies meet the demand?

Off-peak recharging, usually overnight. YOu could look it up.

MEXICO CITY, May 30 -- President Felipe Caldern announced Friday that Ford will build its new fuel-efficient Fiesta "global car" in suburban Mexico City and upgrade two plants here as part of a $3 billion investment, the largest in Mexican history by a foreign manufacturer.

The decision is a major setback for the United Auto Workers union, which has pushed Ford and other manufacturers to invest in U.S. plants. But it was a coup for the Mexican economy after years of losing manufacturing jobs to China and other Asian countries.

SAL...you're cracking me up here!

FF!

The so called "Hummer" is not even close to a hum v. These rigs are nothing more that a deluxe hum v-like body on a Tahoe chassis. So the "Truck" designation.
Marketed to the ego of wanna-be yups. I use a 72 Landcruiser to navigate rough back roads of the mountains. I laugh at the folks that drive any 4 wheel drive in metropolitan areas. Commuting to work in these unneeded gas hogs is really dumb. When the highway (two lane and like a snake) is bad or I need it, I drive a diesel 4x4 truck. The rest of the time I use a little 3 cylinder car I bought and repaired. Smart cars get out of the way it! I've got $400.00 in the thing and it gets 46-52 MPG, depending on which way the wind is blowing. This car was built in 1988! If you wait for Uncle Sam to do ANYTHING, you will be sorely disappointed.

Kerrin, does that mean that we can now expect undocumented UAW immigrants sneaking into Mexico to work at Ford?

FF..Eva. Wanna bet the Mexican gov wouldn't be pleased in the reverse?
