What was he waiting for, exactly?

He was hoping people wouldn't be so blinded by their own ignorance and bias and realize it has nothing to do with him. OR maybe that people would grow up and stop this "him too" bit. Or maybe recognize the difference between a relationship and an acquaintance.
Alas there are just too many dumb people out there.
