A psychologist who helps lead the post-traumatic stress disorder program at a medical facility for veterans in Texas told staff members to refrain from diagnosing PTSD because so many veterans were seeking government disability payments for the condition. "Given that we are having more and more compensation seeking veterans, I'd like to suggest that you refrain from giving a diagnosis of PTSD straight out," Norma Perez wrote in a March 20 e-mail to mental-health specialists and social workers at the Department of Veterans Affairs' Olin E. Teague Veterans' Center in Temple, Tex.

Problem Solved
~the right

Ignorance is Bush.

I think the biggest problem comes from the fact that we try to dump the troops back in the US too quick. One day he is getting shot at for real and the next day he is back amoung civilians here in the US.

The second world war troops we sent home on slow ships, not fast planes. They were surrounded by their fellow soldiers on the ships for weeks to allow them to come down from their combat high much slower.

I'm sure that there a few looking for a nice disibality check but their numbers are small.

When politics/money and medicine clash there will always be dishonest ambitious people siding with politics/money. Disgusting.

The Nation recently had an article pointing our just how widespread PTSD really is, and how hard for victims of it to get proper treatment from government providers. Yeah, one more Bush legacy. No. 2,875. More soldiers committing suicide than are killed in battle. herm

A Medical Professional is trying to stem the tide of frivolous attempts to gain compensation and all you can say is "Ignorance of Bush?"

Are you just plain stupid, boy? LOL... Did you even read the article?

This is just more evidence that people just want the government to "Take care of them"

I, for one, do not want the government anywhere near my personal business.

You jackasses want this government, the same one that has been running the VA and the post office for so many years to provide US Universal Health Care? Are you just plain stupid, boy? LOL...

Bring our soldiers home!!! End this act of meddling in a soverign nation's business (sometimes labelled "The Iraq War")

And, while you're at it, shut down the American Empire!!!

Just what countries are in this Empire that you talk about? Do you have any idea what an empire is? Look it up because if we had one, we would be sending their riches back to the US treasury.

You don't read a lot do you? The neo-cons admit, and revel in the fact that the U.S. is an Empire. The paleo-cons like Pat Buchanan admit, and deplore the fact. Likewise, some of the Left. The topic has been written about extensively in political journals for over a decade.

We can state now clearly the Ignorance of Eddie.

A medical professional Norma Perez, really? What is her profession, her degree of accreditation?

Here is her accreditation:

Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake said in a statement that Perez's e-mail was "inappropriate" and does not reflect VA policy. It has been "repudiated at the highest level of our health care organization,"

Had you read the article?

I take this "American Empire" business as just more right wing masturbation.

But the notion is hardly new. In the nineteenth century we called it "manifest destiny." It has now reached full flower, I think they call it, with GWB assuming the mantle of the emperor. herm

Bush ordering filet Mignon while Soldiers eat Parasitic infested MRES: $50.95

Cheney's 'Friend' Harry Whittington having reconstructive surgery after getting shot in the face on a hunting trip: $5,678.00

Mr. Browne buying shoes and clothes for his media appearances while thousands drown in New Orleans; $12,000.00

Republicans trying to use their ol' stand-by excuse that people are trying to cheat the system: Priceless

WE have VETS who cheat the system all the time...we have guys in the airforce that have never seen combat get PTSD

but thats beside the point...here is my problem....the VA has a policy..if a Dept can save the Feds so much money each year....the Dept head will recieve a bonus.....and i have seen these bonuses get as big as 35,000.....so if anybody is screwing these troops out of a claim.....its the doctor themselves.....and for a greedy reason

Are you just plain stupid, boy? LOL...

I think you are absolutley correct....however, if they are so ineffecient at running the VA, the post office, et.al, why in god's name did they undertake something like the invasion and occupation of another country?

Point in fact that is exactly who's name they imposed.

two words "Fiat Dollar"

Look it up.

Print money out of thin air that puts value back into the US Treasury? It's far too simple once you want to understand it.

Sniper, I know you'll need time to understand this concept, but first by learning about the Federal Reserve. Be a good American! Understand how banks are run. Understand our economy. Research why dollar is used by most countries as a reserve currency.

It's your responsibility as an American to know this!!!

Not to do so, would allow the dollar to fall out of favour as the world's reserve currency.

which it is doing anyway :(

It sucks to own anything with a dollar value.

It's time (actually too late) to begin to dis-mantle the American Empire.

Why do we have military bases in other countries. We have over 700, you know. Can you imagine Russia or China building a military base in Mexico? Would we tolarate that?

The Feds are just trying not to let a precedent get started.

After eight years of Dubya, the whole damn country has PTSD, and who can afford to treat that?

Funny and poignant.

After almost 7 years as a New Yorker I'm convinced many if not most of us were much more 'upset' about the events of 9/11/01 than let on at first . Part of my commute puts me in position to look at the hole in the sky that now exists because of 911. I can't not look at that hole.

Perhaps as a NY'er I am more angry than some at Bush for using the tragedy to support an Predetermined AGENDA...

Sniper, I think you make a great and inquisitive point. The change in environments--levels of violence--is extremely dramatic, and occurs overnight. Maybe an intermediate "wind-down" would smooth the transition. No, I wouldn't recommend they walk the streets of Compton, CA at 3 AM as a transition phase. But maybe troops on the front lines should be required to move to the rear for a short time, maybe even just a week but still "in-theater", or something like that to let their minds process the transition at a slower pace.

PTSD can manifest itself in many ways. It can lead to major depression, suicide, and violently acting out against strangers. Lives are DESTROYED by PTSD. If our soldiers are suffering this affliction as a result of their service in our wars then we as a nation have a moral duty to provide the best care available. Again, when it is the health of our injured or traumatized soldiers, money should not be an issue. We must spend whatever it costs to try and make them whole.

Considering that treating an individual with their mental illness inevitably costs less than dealing with the results of their untreated illness, I'm not surprised that this would be a Bush admin. flunky. It's mean-spirited, ungrateful, and short-sighted.

Sarge, If McCain gets elected, we're staying in Iraq. I can only hope he pushes to abandon the voluntary force and institutes a draft. Multiple rotation problem solved.

That's never going to happen. Wanna know why? Because bringing back the draft is the A#1 way to have us withdrawing troops within a year.

The Peace Movement during Vietnam didn't really start picking up steam until middle class college kids lost their deferments.

As long as the poor and the minorities are mostly serving, any war is okay with us.
