Peggy Noonan: The Democrats aren't the ones falling apart, the Republicans are. The Democrats can see daylight ahead. For all their fractious fighting, they're finally resolving their central drama.

I would be interested to hear some analysis of her perspectives from people on this site who lean right of center.

I've never been a Republican, but I had been convinced they stood for certain principles, many of which appealed to me.

I watched them leave each and every principle exposed to die, like deformed infants left outside for wolves.

When you pointed this abandonment out to them, the most moderate response you got was "911 changed everything". Much more often you were attacked and ridiculed.

After freaking YEARS of this normal people get damned cynical and tired. George Bush was NOT God. Wars are NEVER easy. Most AMERICANS think torturers are bastards.

Deal with these things or just go away forever.

Bush gave up golf in consideration of American mothers who had lost children in Iraq.

Pretty god-damned silly on it's face. But now he's got to keep from golfing pretty much forever, because if he starts again it's the same as saying he thinks mothers have stopped grieving.

So, Bush is a shallow boor, an emotional midget, no matter what he does on this subject past this point.

If you can't understand how this sort of thing illustrates exactly how we got into the mess we're in, you need take a long sauna and then whip yourselves with birch branches.

"...people on this site who lean right of center" and "I had been convinced they stood for certain principles, many of which appealed to me" comes from reasonable posters. Conservatives are not. Republicans are not. They are deluded by either evangelist gurus or corporate dollars. If they're not, their entire way of looking at the world is "I got mine and let everyone else die." herm

Peggy Noonan used to have serious gaga eyes for Dubya.

Wha' happened?

"Peggy Noonan used to have serious gaga eyes for Dubya.

Wha' happened?"

His second term.

Noonan's right, as usual. The Repubs are in for a pounding in November.

IMO, it was when they abandoned their commitment to term limits that they lost their way. As soon as they got to Washington, they were determined to stay. Busted budgets, energy policy, Social Security (lack of) reform--too easy to play it safe and just roll into the next election. And if Americans want that, we can just elect Democrats. May as well get the real thing. And in November, America will.

RiR-

LOL. Modern "Conservatism" ruled for years. You voted for it again and again, and now you disavow it!

Chump!

No one hears the "...but..but..but...that's not what I intended when I voted for these guys again, and again and again"!

Um, what makes me a chump? I put my principles over the party. When they got to Washington, they changed their tune and governed like liberals. As a result, they deserve to lose.

We'll do better next time, hopefully. I'm unlike many of you on the left, who is glad to see the Congress in Dem hands, even though they've done nothing at all. Most lefties would re-elect libs to Congress in perpetuity, just to be able to say they control the place. For me, it's more practical. If you're not going to Washington to change it, stay home. At least the money is honest outside the beltway.

The Republicans somewhere in the late 1980's or early 1990's ceased to be a party of conservatives and became one of twisted corporatists. The nation to their way of thinking no longer consisted of citizens but rather of consumers. Principle and ideals were replaced by ideology and slogans masquerading as truth.
After all remember George W Bush is this county's first CEO President. I have worked with MBAs from some of this nations best businesses schools .over the years. In all honesty I have not been very impressed.

"...when they (GOP) abandoned their commitment to term limits that they lost their way."

Term limits ARE an insidious Repub plot to oust capable Demo legislators, but they're hardly why the Gay Old Party lost its way. It's not simple to explain in a few succinct words, but we could start with greed. If only compassionate conservatism really existed... herm

"For me, it's more practical. If you're not going to Washington to change it, stay home."

Interesting notion, Rightie. Perpetual change is a Democratic notion; I'm glad you're withus. Remember, if you forever oust incumbents, their replaciments become the incumbents. herm

I'll print this article out and now give you my 2 cents later.

Clearly the GOP will get thwomped this November, and clearly they will have earned it. (Ultra rIght wing idiots on this site notwithstanding.) The more interesting question in my mind has to with how that Party is going to reestablish it's conservative credentials in the aftermath of the election. They got a lot of work cut out for them. As always, I suspect it will be the mirror incompetence of the Dems which will lead to their renaissance.

MODER8

George Bush has put the party name in the gutter . . . that's a given.

If there are any true, old school GOP statesmen out there, they'll have to do a serious exorcism from their ranks before trust is restored.

My guess is that the neocons are already working on their Articles of Impeachment for Obama much like they were for Bill Clinton in 2000.

I only hope Obama is savy enough to see it coming.

After reading Noonan's rantings against the Left for many years, I don't take her new-found "revelations" as anything but stating the already-obvious.

Too little, too late.

The Republicans are going to get pounded in November. The Dems will have even bigger majorities in both houses and I'll be shocked if McCain can keep the White House.

Long-term, the Democrats have an opportunity to be the majority party for a decade or longer, but if they screw it up like the Gingrich crowd did, they'll be back on the outside quickly. Americans don't identify as strongly with party as they used to. They'll jump off the bandwagon and turn on the Dems like they are doing to the GOP today.

"Um, what makes me a chump? I put my principles over the party. When they got to Washington, they changed their tune and governed like liberals. As a result, they deserve to lose."

YEAH!

So on what year/day did you make this discovery!

When between 1994 and 2006 did you figure they were "acting like liberals"? And what did you do about it?

I suspect it wasn't until AFTER 2006 ---- when they got the boot did you start mouthin' excuses!

perpetuity Indeed!

Most lefties would re-elect libs to Congress in perpetuity, just to be able to say they control the place.

My word, I got a good laugh out of this.

Most leftie, too funny. And for the last few elections who have you voter for just to see your party in perpetuity, certainly was not the dems in control.

Maybe the repos will learn you say, so that means you are again voting for repos for perpetuitness sake.

Do you ever stop and think about what you post, sometimes your chumpness show full baboon assface with such a red glare.

Perpetual change is a Democratic notion; I'm glad you're withus.

Someone needs to let Robert "Sheets" Byrd and Ted "Gurgle" Kennedy, et al, in on the news that Democrats love perpetual change.

Most lefties would re-elect libs to Congress in perpetuity, just to be able to say they control the place.

That's bogus. Nobody votes just to say their team won. They want their agenda to be enacted by the Congress.

At least the money is honest outside the beltway.

That line was pretty funny too!

What's fascinating is that, while I might be able to go an hour discussing the differences in John McCain and Barrack Obama, millions of Republicans appear to regard the two men as being essentially the same.

That's got to be simple craziness. I'd like to see an alternative explanation offered.

That's got to be simple craziness. I'd like to see an alternative explanation offered.

It seems that in many Republicans minds anything to the left of Reagan is liberal. They don't distinguish between different levels of liberal, there by rendering any differences irrelevant. While the Republicans claim to be the "big tent" party, many of them share a view of black and white that is unmovable. Grey doesn't exist.

It would be interesting to hear an explanation from one of them.

As soon as they got to Washington, they were determined to stay. Busted budgets, energy policy, Social Security (lack of) reform--too easy to play it safe and just roll into the next election. You are correct. Why should I vote for a lib republican and not know what he is going to do when I can vote for a democrat and know what to expect?

Since the 1960 Election (NIXON vs KENNEDY), the Republician Party, has sold its soul to the worst of our Cultural selves. To divide between Black an White, Rich an Poor an to find Religious differenced that can be exploited. Much to there shame and the Country lack of Morals, they have been successful at it.

If we are to really be a graeat Country this must change, the increase in population of Hispanics, Black and more Women voters we have started to change that. George Bush's devastating Presidency will give this country a chance to really be the greatest Country in the World.

As Senator Obama, is sworn in as the next President, his speech should start with the promise that we will not as a Country ever TORTURE another human being, at that very moment the cameras should be on the faces of both BUSH an CHENEY. President Elect Obama must say that with Bush an Cheney both on the Platform, pull no punches the World must know that America nightmare is over!!!!

This is nothing to do with your post but saw you had been on this thread and thought I might catch you here. Took your advice and bought McAfee Internet Security as an anti-virus, etc., for my computer. Doesn't seem too intrusive like some anti-virus programs and relatively easy to set. Thanks for the suggestion.

CHRIS

Good move. I kept my subscription to McAfee Security Suite (about $80.00/yr) until AOL started to include it as part of my membership at no additional charge. In fact, about same time AOL dropped their monthly charge from $21.95 down to $9.95. I think they were feeling the pinch of competition.

I'm surprised that Charter doesn't provide some security software in your membership package.

TWINPAC

Yeah, I laid out $75 for McAfee's software. I should have researched more and gotten the one with less bells and whistles as I only have my one computer (the McAfee software I got allows it to be used on up to three computers) and I don't do business or anything on my computer -- just blog, surf the web, and only a few occasional emails and that's it. But it's installed now so that's fine.

Had trouble finding the "D" drive in order to start the installation so I put out an "SOS" on the Nooner yesterday and NULLIFIDIAN came to my rescue and told me how to find the "D" drive and I was able to take it from that point. (Guess I'll have to be nice to him from now on. *grin*)

Did not want to have spend the extra time to call the Dell guys in India again just to find the D drive although I have to admit every time I've had to call them over there at Dell for computer help I've always gotten a good response.

Say, do you know if when they say this program I bought can be used on up to three computers does that mean I can share it with other people who are not connected to my IP provider? Say, like sharing it with two other people not even in this state or does it mean only three computers all in the same house? Do you know? For $75 bucks I'd like to share it with someone else who could use it but doesn't live with me in the house. (This McAfee software came with a really dinky two page instruction book along with the CD in the box and that was it.)

TWINPAC

I'm surprised that Charter doesn't provide some security software in your membership package.

They did. But can you believe they just never told me it was available to me when I upgraded my internet speed and I only just now happened to even find out it existed when I called them a week or so about a charge I was questioning on my bill. I have tv cable and my internet with them. They keep trying to get me to put my telephone service with them too but I told them no. I said when your cable goes out (which it has a few times) I may not have my tv or my internet but at least I've got access to my telephone. Why put all my eggs in one basket, right?

I like to be able to access my anti-virus software (such as disabling it for "child safety" since there's no kids here, checking on updates, etc.) and it didn't allow for that.

For Charter's own anti-virus program you had to actually call Charter's offices for any problems or changes so I deleted their program. I wanted my own handson software. Besides, by that time I had already had that trojan I could not get rid of (even after downloading Charter's anti-virus software so a day or so later) that required me to do a complete Windows XP reinstall last week. So at that time when I had the Dell guy on the phone with me I went ahead and ordered McAfee as I remembered what you said about it being a good anti-virus software. I would NEVER touch Norton crap again. Their 2007 edition was a nightmare to try and figure out.

George W Bush is just the inevitable result of the collapse of the GOP since Nixon. Face it, Reagan was a traitor who avoided impeachment only because of his alzheimers, Bush1 aided Reagan in selling weapons to the mad ayatollahs and fabricated evidence against saddam to sucker America into defending saudistan, who repaid us with 9-11 and Bush2 is just a complete fuck-up. The national debt more than doubled under these three "conservatives".

handson = hands-on

You are right nor, all them damn reps should have been impeached but Clinton was the only one that received that honor for a real long time. Kinna pisses you off dosen't it.

My recollection is that impeachment of Clinton failed in the House. In other words, he wasn't impeached. Am I forgetting something?

He was impeached, or formally accused of crimes by the House but was found not guilty by the Senate.

FYI Both Johnson and Clinton were Impeached. The total sum of Impeachment rests solely in the House. The Senate holds a trial for said impeachments. Impeachent equals indictment. NOTHING more.
