I don't post intentionally false headlines. I just changed two this morning in response to readers who thought they were inaccurate. Rob admitted he was writing a bogus headline as part of his ongoing campaign to work the ref.

Getting back to the issue here, I think Obama was right to apologize for calling a female "sweetie" as he was disregarding her attempt to get a question answered. It's not a major insult, but it's condescending and dismissive. It's like calling a man "pal" when you don't know him and you think he's being a jerk.

I'm sure politicians and reporters have these kinds of social faux pas all the time as they deal with each other, since in many cases they're pissing each other off.

In this situation, since so many female Hillary backers are going to be deciding whether they'd support Obama in the general election, he can't afford to leave this one out there without trying to make up for it.

You should've waited for that nice Mr. Wolfson to transmit this morning's talking points to you. Hillary's making all nice-nice with Obama at the moment. Her desire for the vice-presidential nomination is only surpassed by her desire for the presidential nomination (which even she knows isn't going to happen this turn of the wheel).

To be fair, I think if I had been the reporter in question, I would have viewed Obama's comment as patronizing and condescending. I would have been less insulted after he explained he uses the word more than he should and apologized for doing so. I would take him up on his offer to make it up to me the next time he was in MI by asking for an exclusive interview. It wasn't the best thing Obama could have said, but it wasn't the worst thing either.

Obama was clearly wrong here, and the fact he apologizes is moving in the correct direction.

One has to wonder though, if he did this to his wife what would be the conversation be like behind closed doors.

I would imagine that like most couples the Obamas use terms of endearment with each other, so I don't think if he called his wife "sweetie" it would be to the same effect. I use and have been called sweetie, honey, baby, sweetheart. I wouldn't like being called any of those things in a public setting, especially a business setting, by a stranger though. I would take into account, however, the fact that someone uses the term with others. I have a friend, for example, who often calls salespeople people hon and buddy. He is an elderly gentleman who comes across as polite and friendly. Most folks are offended by his word. Usually they just smile.

I didn't say Obama's "advising me" comment was rude. I thought it was brilliant, and you could see from the crushed look on Clinton's face that she thought it too. She thought she'd scored a point off him for relying on old Clinton advisers, and he turned it around on her and got the biggest laugh of the night.

It reminded me of when Joe Lieberman said in the debate with Cheney, paraphrasing, "my wife wishes I would get a job in private industry like yours" and Darth responded, "I'm doing everything I can to make that possible." Lieberman, who relished his reputation for being funny, had just been turned into Cheney's straight man.

I was at a campaign rally once on a college campus, and at the end, a bunch of students handed out bumper stickers. I wanted one, and so, when the guy, who was handing them out near me, came by, I called out, "Hey cutie! Over here!" I got the bumper sticker, and my use of the term was not an indication that I'm a manhater. The male student laughed as did my friends, some of whom were guys.

I guess I missed the part in the WaPo article that said "sweetie" = fuck you, or that said anything about Obama being sexist. Seemed to me to be just another attempt at an excuse.

I agree. Those kinds of things are very common in certain parts of the country, such as the south and parts of the midwest. I'm from Illinois. Yesterday, for example, a rather buxom, young blonde secretary referred to me as "honey." I was not put off by it -- even though she's lower on the "totem pole" here than me. In fact, I rather enjoyed it. If I weren't married, I probably would have gunned on her afterwards. I hope it continues. It's good for my soon-to-be-middle-aged ego. She's a sweetie.
