The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday said too many justices have conflicts for the court to act in an appeal by 33 companies trying to stop a flurry of lawsuits seeking more than $400 billion from corporations that did business in South Africa during the apartheid era. Due to the lack of a quorum, the Supreme Court was required to affirm a lower court ruling that went against the companies, many of them major international corporations.

WOW I am SHOCKED.

Larry Mohr

What is truely shocking is there will be people posting on this thread who see no problem with this at all.

So now no one in our supreme court of our land is able to make a judgement because they are all invested in this corporate arena.

Yep, the supreme justice of the republican party will reign for all our futures.

Ok since the SCOTUS recuses itself who then hears the cases??

Larry Mohr

Larry,

This is exactly why our representations is supposed to divest themselves.

How can any judegements be made when they are able to make decisions that will benefit themselves.

It is why they have full money retirement after their government office served.

Just another broken brick takin down rome.

"Ok since the SCOTUS recuses itself who then hears the cases??"

Do we need a Supreme Supreme Court?

Or maybe a citizens' Supreme Court?

Excuse me, Socialistas, but this is a clear example of a case where the Court in NOT corrupt. Look at the money they left on the table. If they were in it with the big corporations, surely they'd have gone to bat for them in this huge case!

Attention Nazis,

They shouldn't be allowed to be Supreme Court Justices if they have interests that keeps them from interpreting the Law.

Oh I forgot, this is a corporate country not a constitutional one. Nevermind.

WOW I am SHOCKED.

You are shocked that they own stocks? WTF over.

I thought most people that have any savings at all own stocks in large companies.

I am surprised that their stocks are not in blind trusts...

Also, not sure what the damages are.. the article did not say, but it seems like your comment, Moneywar, that "the supreme justice of the republican party will reign for all our futures." is incorrect since if they were ruling as what you cosnider to be typical pro-business Repubs, then they would agree to hear the case and overturn the anti-business ruling of the lower court. Since they have instead left the businesses to pay the settlement, it seems rather Dem to me.

By the way, it is a mix of justices involved:
Roberts - nominated by Bush
Breyer - nominated by Clinton
Alito - nominated by Bush
Kennedy - nominated by Reagan

From the article:

Chief Justice Roberts has in the last two years sold stock at least twice so he could participate in an appeal before the Supreme Court. A recent change federal tax law - championed by Roberts - makes it easier for members of the federal judiciary to divest of stock holdings.

And, once divested, they can rule utterly without bias. Then they can reinvest.

Sounds like a great change in the law. Atta'boy, Chief!

Scorecard:

White racist supremacists - 1
Innocent Negro victims - 0

President Obama will correct these injustices with reparations.

Be Well.

Skip; ( and the rest of you morans)
Did you even read this? The "Big Corps" LOST.

IDIOTS.

rater,

seems you missed the very point of the issue,............IDIOT!

After reading your inputs I have to wonder, do any of you actually have jobs? It amazes me how few of you have a clue about life. You all must be bunkered in your parents basements not knowing how the world actually works. You all sit there saying how things should be (in your mind) but you are not doing anything to make a change, i.e. get a job, run for election, etc.

How many of you have actually done anything to make changes, and please elaborate. So many of you talk about how screwed up the government is but yet you are unwilling to get a governemnt job to try and change the system.

I feel so sorry for you people. if you are not willing to get into the game, you get what you deserve.

After reading your inputs I have to wonder, do any of you actually have jobs?

Now here is a retort we can nash our teeth into, oops, you mean he is calling us idiots?

Soon to be another poster we all just skip on past.

Although it is the right thing to do, if I know the "ugly american", plans are in the works absolve corporations of all liability.

"you morans(sic)"

Why exactly did they grant certiori? They had to know they'd be conflicted out--why grant cert?

(fun fact: generally speaking, the USSC only hears cases it wants)

money

AAAAAAAAWWWWWW that hurts my feelings.........

Truth hurts doesn't it?

As a result of this ruling, a sale of Africans will be had in Alabama. Exact location not yet announced. Bring your own money, shackles, axe handle and suitable whips.

Come early or all the goodins'l be gone.

You won't find many large companies that didn't do business in South Africa in that era. Thus anyone with shares in a managed IRA or mutual fund would need to recuse themselves.

I remember demonstrations in the late 70's and early '80s pressuring public institutions like universities to divest in apartheid-linked corporations. Now it looks like some of those same corporations are gonna have to pay out.

Cry me a River.

Because most righties don't realize what real scum Bush and Cheney are, I think it is good sometimes to review history.
Cheney's history for our lesson today:

If you don't hate Dick Cheney then there is something wrong with you.

I don't hate Cheney.
