Congressional Democrats are pushing what could become the most dramatic expansion of college aid for military veterans since World War II, with a bill they hope will buoy them this election season and become an albatross for Republicans.

It wont beme an albatros, because McCain's bill would allow transfer of college benefits to a spouse or child, if for example he already has a degree, which for example a lot of Reservists do. If they cant use it but their family can, it should be so. Agree?

...because these courageous souls earned it.

for the gramar freaks

it won't be

or

it won't become

Sorry, didnt mean to fluster anyone. ;-p

"for the gramar(sic) freaks"

ROFL!

Z leave my grammar alone, you just about made fall out of my chaire again, commming from the othher thread.

Good move for the Dems>

I got screwed on the 10 year rule. Lost a good portion of my benefits!

Let's put the money grubbing Republican assholes on the defensive.

Why do the Republicans hate Veterans? Why?...................

Congress Eyes Major Ass Cheek Expansion of all naive GI's with new GI Bill

While Congress continues to spend money beyond all reason with much fanfare, dogs get better treatment than disabled vets. You have to read the whole article to grasp the callous mistreatment vets are getting.

"The Truth About Veteran Suicides

"Eighteen American war veterans kill themselves every day. One thousand former soldiers receiving care from the Department of Veterans Affairs attempt suicide every month. More veterans are committing suicide than are dying in combat overseas.

"These are statistics that most Americans don't know, because the Bush administration has refused to tell them. Since the start of the Iraq War, the government has tried to present it as a war without casualties."
www.fpif.org

Gads are you vets stupid!

"because McCain's bill would allow transfer of college benefits to a spouse or child"

And what is to stop the Dems from putting a similar provision in their bill???

HEY REPUBLICANS?

I saw a news clip about this bill a couple nights ago on tv. It is an expansion of the GI Bill to help vets pay for college as the current bill GI Bill doesn't cover the huge increase in costs in educatino.

Here are the provisions of the bill:

Pitched by the Democrats is a plan that would essentially guarantee a full-ride scholarship to any in-state public university, along with a monthly housing stipend, for individuals who serve the military for at least three years.

The proposal would give veterans 15 years to use the benefit, instead of the current 10-year limit, and would set up a new government program that matches financial aid by more expensive private institutions.

Guess what, Republicans? BUSH SAID HE WOULD VETO IT!

Bush has got billions $$$ for his war profiteering cost plus, no bid contracts for Halliburton, KBR, and the rest of the war profiteers and his other Republican buddies but not a single dime more for our military veterans' educational needs. Not even after they were promised this money to go to college or a vocational ed school.

One small question...
how will we pay for all this new entitlement?

Some of you young libs should sign up for military service. It would make men out of you. Why go through life being whiney wimpy libs.

Did it transfer yet Danni? WTF?

Probably not too bad of an idea to enlist about now. Obama will get us out of that hell hole. Believe it!

This 'lib' served 5 years in the military (honorably discharged).

Try again!

NEXT!

Thanks for your service COMMONSENSE. I'm just trying to get some of these brave young bloggers signed up to kill some Muslims. Our military doesn't need old guys like us anymore.

Hmmmm, why would we want the young to go kill muslims?

What did the Muslims do to You ??

They gave him the stink eye!

Well, I don't know how we're going to pay for it. It's just another one of those things that the democrats are laying out in the open so Bush can veto it. Somehow, after running the country into the dirt for 8 years, he's suddenly become concerned about over spending.

He's an idiot.

I wouldn't call this entitlement. Entitlement suggests that the person is sitting at home collecting a check for little or nothing.

American soldiers deserve the best that we can give them. This is just another way that the politicians in Washington are playing politics with the lives of soldiers.

Yes, they'll support the troops, as long as they leave the army and as long as they tack the spending they really want to do along with it.

4 years of full ride for 3 years service? What a joke....they're not being serious....they're just trying to get the GOPers to vote "against the troops"...cynical, as usual....support the troops, indeed!

Now, I wouldn't mind that benefit at all if it were, say a 6 or 7 year commitment to get it.

As for the rest of the spending attached to this bill, how do the Dems plan to pay for it?

I guess what happened was he went to Turkey on an advert for having sex with a young Turkish boy but he got gang banged instead.

There it is again.

"with a bill they hope will buoy them this election season"

good to know that Democrats care about veterans ... at least during electios.

I've already told my wife what to expect for my military service: a flag for my coffin.

But that's still OK. I did not serve so I could go to the government buffet. I served because I love this nation. I want to be buried with my flag

I support completely revamping the GI Bill.

Though, because I am nearly 100% positive this bill won't pass (nor get through a veto), I wish they would make some easy and inexpensive changes to the current GI Bill.

They need to do whatever is needed to allow for more efficient processing of paperwork and quicker disbursement of funds. They should also ban any university or college from essentially punishing the student (by not allowing him/her to register, graduate, receive grades, get a transcript, etc...) due to delays in processing GI Bill paperwork.

While an undergrad, there were numerous semesters where (through no fault of my own) my GI Bill paperwork (as well as ARNG EAP) was held up and funds weren't disbursed until half way through the semester. I know I wasn't the only one who dealt with this, and unless things have dramatically changed recently, this was (and I'm sure still is) a huge issue. My congressman's office was so used to dealing with these problems, they had a form letter just for GI Bill related issues.

They need to also make changes to the National Guard/Reserve GI Bill program. To receive the money, a reservist needs to be actively drilling. With back-to-back deployments (and multiple AT's a year) it's very hard for a lot of reservists to get through a 4-year college during a 6-year enlistment. I also believe any reservist who serves more than 3 years on active duty should be entitled to active duty GI Bill.

It's a shame Congress won't make the easy changes to the existing program. These issues have been on-going for decades and are nothing new. They'd rather fight for a bill that they know won't be signed into law for political reasons.

"One small question...how will we pay for all this new entitlement?"

By ending the Iraqi Occupation. The 9 Billion being spent there per month will pay the 10 year cost estimate for the GI Bill expansion in about 6 months.

Actually No

The war is being financed on credit. The monthly cost of the war is nothing but new debt accumulating each and every month.

It was tongue in cheek Zap. Because we've got the same people who promote spending hundreds of billions to stay in Iraq with no end in sight complaining about improving benefits for the people who are paying the real price of their war.

Okay, am going to take a bubblebath now.
