I'm under the assumption that our heads of state realize this country lives off its currency being the currency of OPEC. The hegemony of the almighty dollar is what keeps us afloat despite our massive trade deficits. The moment a major provider (read IRaq,IRan) break from that, others may follow suit.

For the US to provoke Iran, unless they directly attack Israel, would be a major mistake on a couple fronts. One the price of gas would hit $6.00 to $8.00 a gallon within 3 weeks and this would escalate to more than a surgical air war.
Iran has the capability with its long range missiles to respond with an attack on our forces in the region as well as an attack on Israel.
Unless we are going to bring back the draft this pre-emptive strike could lead to World War III.
