Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, May 07, 2008

After paying $75 to fill his black Dodge Ram pickup truck for the third time in a week, Douglas Chrystall couldn't take it anymore. "The SUV craze was a bubble and now it is bursting," said George Hoffer, an economics professor at Virginia Commonwealth University whose research focuses on the automotive industry. "It's an irrational vehicle. It'll never come back."

"I don't need this much space," McHugh said of his SUV. "It just seems ridiculous."

...Does this also apply to the car-culture inducing single-family tract homes of Suburbia?

If you don't want to pay high gas prices for your car, then live somewhere where you can walk/ride your bike.

No sympathy for SUV or car drivers... It's your fault for living there. You made the unsustainable choice to live in the 'burbs.

"Having SUVs as an everyday commuter car is largely going away," Chambers said.

..or having a commuter car is going away. Bay Bridge traffic down by 2%, BART trafic up by 5%.

"I don't need this much space," McHugh said of his SUV. "It just seems ridiculous."

Why didn't it seem ridiculous when he bought it? Have his needs for space changed?

I always get a kick out of it when I see some massive gas guzzling SUV on the road, clipping along at 80, with one skinny little jerkoff in it, and there's the "Support The Troops" magnet on the back. Way to support the troops. Ya think we'd be losing kids in Iraq if it wasn't near the center of the worlds oil, ya friggen tool?

You would love me then.
You can recognize me when i am driving my old truck by the blur of 6000 pound of steel powered by a 460 running at 120 making 2-3mpg if that. Or the Lincoln mark viii at 138 mph but at least i get 15mpg at top speed in that.

"It just seems ridiculous."

It seemed ridiculous, even obscene, to many of us when we invaded Iraq.

I already have 150,000 miles on the truck and I have land in the sticks; It's useful. I prefer to use the Porsche to commute when the weather's nice.

I owned and flew a pressurized twin-engine airplane for hundreds of hours; Trained at FlightSafety.

Don't talk to me about fuel costs.

Talk to me about rate-of-return-on-investment.

Her name is RONA.

I'll start a list of government lunacy:

1. McGovern: Guaranteed annual income.

2. Bush: No child left behind.

With the exception of large-scale nuclear war, there will be survivors. At least that's my opinion at the moment.

Zat- Nobody fucking cares about your flying or your imported vehicle.

I drive a chevy pickup with 217,000 on it, gets 30 to the gallon.

When your non-american pos dies I'll still be driving my truck.

Instead of tooting your own horn, how about some real solutions? Use that brain of yours. Or maybe you just don't care about America.

Porsche. Yeah. Like this one.

I drove the same little 1972 BMW 2002 with no air conditioning for 30 years. It never broke.

America elected Reagan.

American airplanes, OTOH.

"Why didn't it seem ridiculous when he bought it?"
yeah... that's it, huh?!?!

i've a neo-con friend who last year bought something needs a landing strip to get near my house.
i belittled him then as he bought it seemingly out of spite.
now when he visits, he drives his wife 4-cylinder car.

i laugh and scoff at these people while understand that a few actually need them - to those few i feel genuine sympathy.
however, they are vastly outnumbered by idiots who just felt as though they needed something huge to drive the kids around in.

" gets 30 to the gallon."
[citation needed]

Or at least admit the unit of measure is kilometers.

If you don't know what 30 to the gallon means, then go crawl back under your rock.

And by the way, son, in America we use miles.
Maybe you didn't know that.

"to the gallon"

Ever hear of the Mobil Gas Economy Run?

Ever have a brain?

"And by the way, son"

I'll use furlongs or fermis if it pleases me.

And don't even pretend to call me "son."

Sorry zat but my wifes 97' Sonoma will get 32 but it does have a tonneau.

But then it's not a real truck. Kinda like a little baby pickup, not cute though.

Big Trucks, Large SUV's are the American way. How many of you just want to go out and buy a new truck?

The new hybrid Tahoe gets 20 mpg. Wow. It only costs $54K.

What ever happened to the electric cars. 8 cents a KW means 150 mpg equivalent?

My Lexus SUV has 215k and gets 28 hwy. Wanna guess where it was built?

Talk to me about the so-called American cars when BMW and Toyota and Mercedes aren't built in the United States, and Ford and GM don't build plants in Mexico and Canada. The finest cars in the world are built right here in American plants by American workers for the American consumer. They just don't have Ford or Chevy or Dodge anywhere on the rear bumpers.

I recall this gem from someone here, a while back:

"A yellow ribbon on a large SUV is like a rosary on a whore."

Can't remember the source, but I use it frequently.

There was that whole "Well, I just feel safer, knowing that whomever or whatever I hit, I will be safer" justification for these roadgoing yachts.

Good point. You forgot Honda built in Ohio.

Do you know or have heard anyone that traded in their Honda for a (Ford, GM or Dodge)?

LOL. Never thought about it before, but no.

In related news, I've never heard of anyone divorcing a 25-year-old hottie for a 45-year-old fatty.

When I was in Switzerland a few months ago, gas was $7.50/gal.

The SUV makes a lot of sense when you fill it up with a lot of people, camping gear and soccer balls. It makes no sense as a commuter car for one person. It didn't make sense as a commuter car when gas was 98 cents a gallon.

Is that silly complete tax write off still on the books? The one that lets you write off a 2 ton vehicle (read Escalade, Navigator)

They did a good job in the WH at getting people to buy gas guzzlers before starting the war that resulted in sky high oil prices.

Looks like there might be some buying opportunities

If I owned a SUV I wouldn't sell it I would just learn how to conserve on pushaline. That's all.

Larry Mohr

Drive a Chery QQ. I do.

Best car in the world... over 50 miles per gallon.

Get the CNG model.. don't run it on petrol (gasoline?) and your fuel cost falls by half!

Made in China.

My v-8 Z71 4x4 extended cab is running great! Wouldn't dump it for nothin.

See here:

en.wikipedia.org

Get this car.... if your fat American behinds can fit into it, that is.

Only morons bought SUV's in the first place and so now even they are admitting they're "Morons"!

Also if the SUV's are coming back to bite these idiots so hard in the ass just imagine what the future toll (punishment) is going to be for having willingly played along with the Bush/Republicians and their Iraq "Oil" War!!!

I would not be able to fit in it. Has nothing to do with being fat. Has everything to do with being tall.

I'm 6 feet tall and can fit with room to spare. How much taller can you be?

Anyway... one of the things I'm trying to say is, now that China has started making cars, the Japanese and Korean car industries are going to get a beating.

This thing cost me half the price of a Toyota and cheaper than a Suzuki or Santro (korean). And it has more electronics than any other car. Fullyloaded... power this, power that...

Chinese made the QQ from off the shelf German parts. It is actually a German car under the hood.

I'm 6 feet tall and can fit with room to spare. How much taller can you be?

5 inches

You'll fit.

You'll fit.

It must be larger than an American midsized car, then, because I do not fit into those.

Besides, I like having steel around me. I don't want a flimsy tin can that will collapse when hit at 10 MPH.

Unbelievable that the Chinese make a car to fit a 6'5" frame when their average height is 5'6".

Only morons bought SUV's in the first place and so now even they are admitting they're "Morons"!

Couldn't agree more... Most of the people that bought SUVs are fronters that need to impress others.. They are (were) a status symbol and completely ridiculous.

With all due respect Tosser You can shove that car straight up Your ringpiece sideways for all I care. I don't want a beer can around Me. I want a tank around Me. Besides I am BIG I don't want to have to call the Fire Department every time I wanted to get out of the blooming thing. It's DINKY.

Larry Mohr

Tosser:

I decided to look up some specs on that QQ car to see if you are correct -- that I could fit into it. The first article I read was this, then I stopped.

The car is at the center of an industrial rights controversy, since General Motors have claimed that it is very similar to the Chevrolet Spark/Daewoo Matiz. GM executives have proved that the doors of the Chery car can be mounted on the Chevrolet Spark without modification,[1] and Car and Driver, an automobile magazine, calls it "a copy".

I cannnot fit into the Spark if I was greased and using a shoehorn! What the hell were you thinking when you said I could fit into the QQ?

Goatman:

I seems to be taller than wider. It's got headroom.

But then if you can't fit into the Chevy then I guess I was wrong.

Larry:

One of the reasons I got this car was that it has a thicker sheet for the body. This ain't no tin can like some Japanese car.

I seems to be taller than wider.

IT seems to be....

The error is muchly regretted.

My wife's '93 Explorer XLT (208,000 miles)gets 17 mpg overall, and my '92 Corolla wagon (272,000 miles) gets 35 mpg overall. Guess which one we'll be driving until the doors fall off?

Different realities require different actions. Until gasoline went over two dollars per gallon, a home in the suburbs was a good bet to avoid urban crime and crowding. Look for renewal of mass transit and gentrification of close-to-downtown urban shitholes. Crime in the city will probably not be tolerated as the swells from the exurbs come back to downtown!

I drive a 1988 Mitsubishi mighty max.

It's small and great on gas. A vehicle is a utilitarian thing for me. I don't give a fiddly fart about what it looks like as long as it has seat belts and an engine.

All I want to do is go from point A to point B in relative comfort. If point A is within a mile of point B, I ride my bike.

First car I've owned in 5 years. Bought it for 1k at an auto auction. It does have a fine stereo in it though.

It's small and great on gas. A vehicle is a utilitarian thing for me. I don't give a fiddly fart about what it looks like as long as it has seat belts and an engine.

That's me. I'm not out to impress anyone with my vehicles. I drive a 8 yo chevy pickup, 150 kmiles. No auto anything. Gotta roll down windows manually, gotta shift, stock sound system, low cost (but good) tires, stock rims etc.

My Jeep Wrangler gets about 16. When I bought it, I had a job that provided me with wheels, so it was only used as a second car. New job, much better pay, but no free ride. MPG wasn't much of an issue when I bought it, but it is starting to really be painful now. But damn, it's nice to have the rag-top on sunny days.

Goat,

Not bad, my truck is 10 years old chevy and is great. Got it and use it mainly for towing my camping trailer for the wife and I. It also has 130K and I need to put new tires on it this year.

I usually take the vrroooom vtx to work unless it snows or ices.

Nothing like cruising the country on a bike, see more, stop more, and get by far more smelling fresh air. What a thrill.

That sounds like me too. I drive a 98 Chevy PU with manual windows and stock sound, but it's an automatic. I've got about 165,000 miles on her, and she's still going strong. When the time comes, I will replace her with another Chevy PU.

and the point, of course, is to merely point out that to all of you sonsabitches who keep wanting us to be taken back by mexico or seceede.....that is just a little message to remind you that texas is one of the few states that could stand on its own, if we needed to.......so just keep on with your little comments and nonsense and maybe someday we will both be right.....

and again....thats 10.7 BILLION LEFT OVER........

hee hee...........

and of course we need to also mention the downside of that.

riggs offshore.....( possible problems, but great for fishing)

air in parts of gulf coast that you can see. (its green)

on every terrorists first strike list with mamouth refinaries all up and down the coast but mainly in houston.

but those are our little burdens, but I think we can work things out with THAT EXTRA ALMOST 11 BILLION DOLLARS.................

oh oh.......I cant stop laughin.........

It's true. Look at the
tuna people pull in from this rig.

Most of you are dipshits with your SUVs. This isn't new news! People have been talking about this for decades. You just didn't listen and cared more about what your neighbors/johnqpublic thought... Stupid!

When the time comes, I will replace her with another Chevy PU.

Same here. In fact mine is my second one. The first one I had for 11 years, 200 kmiles. All I ever did other than the usual preventative maintenance was change the starter motor and the fuel pump. She was leaking oil towards the end -- about a quart every 4 or 5 tankfulls. But as I said on a thread a few weeks ago, I drive slowly, no jackrabbit starts or stops, etc. That goes a long ways towards the longevity of a car IMO.

I too will buy another Chevy pickup when this one's life is over.

Ooohrah..

It is always a choice.. I simply said that those that chose to buy SUVs made a very dumb choice and most of them made it for really stupid reasons... Did I imply that somebody forced them to be stupid???

Sprague,

In states like Michigan, SUV's have practical appeal:

1. They are all available with 4WD - when you've got mom Shclepping the kids around during a blizzard in Michigan, 4WD adds a level of control on hazardous roads that is appreciated as is the crashworthiness and the more commanding view of the road afforded by the higher seating position.

2. They have space and seating that is comparable to a station wagon. When going on a 3-4 hour road trip to Northern Michigan for a 4-day weekend hauling the kids, dog and lots of stuff, space and utility are crucial.

3. When talking about the bigger SUV's, we are typically talking about body-on-frame, or at least unibody with a live rear axle. This allows for considerably higher towing capacity than a car - an absolute must for Michiganders who are towing a trailer or a boat.

4. For the most part, they ARE capable of going off-road which is a must for certain vacationing in Northern Michigan.

All valid points Jeff, but it doesn't explain why dipshits in LA, Miami, NY, SF, ETC are buying SUVs. My explanation does...

I have a Subaru Outback that gets around 30mpg and can do anything an SUV can do.. SUVs were/are a status symbol and it is funny as hell to watch these "keeping up with the Jones'" types trying to get rid of them. They can all suck it..

JJ,

You mean us outback hicks in the northwest don't have the same reasons?..........SARCASM

Even those of us who kids have left the nest still like the comfort of the 4x4 and towing ability.

It does a great job of getting to work, to the ski slopes, and the hunting grounds and let alone the ability to haul building material for the home improvement. Just think, 45 dollars saved every time I use my truck instead of having it delivered.

Just finished my hard wood floors and tiling for the kitchen and the weather is improving so the fence and drive is next. All requiring hauling and the truck does the work.

You mean us outback hicks in the northwest don't have the same reasons?

Well, I live in the Northwest.. But do you drive a truck to work everyday? If so, by necessity or by choice?

Sprague,

I have a Subaru Outback that gets around 30mpg and can do anything an SUV can do.. SUVs were/are a status symbol and it is funny as hell to watch these "keeping up with the Jones'" types trying to get rid of them. They can all suck it..

Absolutely.

The up-and-coming trend is crossovers. "SUV's" built on car platforms. Essentially, they are 4WD/AWD available station wagons that are designed to look like SUV's but drive like cars with all of the other advantages cars have over SUV's.

Due to family connections, I am able to purchase/lease Ford products at employee pricing.

We had an '02 Explorer and when the lease was up 3 years later we switched to a Ford Freestyle. We saved about 5 miles per gallon in fuel consumption with identical acceleration and gained in utility, particularly stowage behind the 3rd row seat. When the 2-year lease on our Freestyle expired, we leased a Taurus X - which is a re-designed Freestyle.

Since we don't need to tow and don't need to go off-road, the Taurus X matches or exceeds the Explorer on all other areas of consideration. It was a no-brainer for us.

"I don't need this much space," McHugh said of his SUV. "It just seems ridiculous."

Why didn't it seem ridiculous when he bought it? Have his needs for space changed?

Posted by JOE

No, but now his irrational choice is costing him more money so all of a sudden it is "ridiculous".

Of course it was ridiculous when he bought it, but he was just buying into the hype of keeping up with the neighbors and the scare tactics of the auto industry citing them as "safer" than cars.

I have a friend who bought one of the biggest SUV's around when gas was $1.69 per gallon then had to hear him bitch and whine when it $3. But he would not dump it for a smaller car because of the "prestige" of having it. What a dope.

I look out into the parking lot of my building and 70% of the vehicles are SUV's. Most with one commuter, female who never ever ever take them off road or haul cargo. But they have bought into the "status" of owning one. Dopes.

yea. i'm an indi/contractor. i do some pretty large jobs. i drive a mazda 626(car). i can fit almost every thing in my little car that i need, and what ever i cant home depo will deliver. so why does some soccer mom, or dad, need a big suv if i dont. i sick of these a holes that can hardly drive a small car driving these big suvs, empty, not paying attention to how they drive, talking on there cells. it seems the bigger the vehicle you drive the bigger the jerk you are.

But as I said on a thread a few weeks ago, I drive slowly, no jackrabbit starts or stops, etc. That goes a long ways towards the longevity of a car IMO.

Absolutely right Goatman, also saves gas.

Read an article last night that in tests a Camry would get 40mpg on the highway at 55. At 75... 30 mpg.

If everyone drove 10 mph less on the highway America would save billions in fuel and that would translate into lower gas prices.

I hate to say it but.. Our best friends bought an Xterra with the entire "offroad" package. Yeah they are really into offroading, but who in their right mind would do it in a brand new Nissan? Nt them either.. So what is the point.. People that are into cars baffle me!

A car is a way for me to get places I NEED to go so I don't have to take the bus..

I look out into the parking lot of my building and 70% of the vehicles are SUV's.

I love driving my son to preschool.

Every vehicle in the parking lot is either an SUV or a minivan and then I show up in my 2-door, Acura RSX Type-S.

I feel like such a rebel!

My car gets about 30 mpg in mixed driving, BTW.

Sprague,

People that are into cars baffle me!

Guilty as charged.

I am a major car enthusiast.

I think it's something that just has to be experienced.

AHHHHHHHHH! ROFLCOPTER!

I've been waiting for the SUV-holes to get theirs for a long time.

Zat,

Didn't that 2002 have over 200k on the odo when you finally got rid of it?

Sorry JJ,

Get on a bike and spend a day on a long road trip, and I suspect the 2 wheel verity will become one of your enthusiasms too.

Spend some time behind the wheel of Zat's Porsche 9-11 Carrera S or my dad's BMW 545i and then see if your opinion has changed.

Are you inviting me to meet your dad and go for a drive?

MW,

Road bikes scare me.

I can see the merit of a dirt-bike or an Enduro, but bikes designed for road-use only are scary.

As a teenager I had a moped that topped out at 42 mph (an Aero 50) and I still found cars to be more appealing.

I'll pilot a snowmobile, a dirt-bike or a wave-runner, but I have no desire to ride your rice-burner.

Get on a bike....

---- Moneywar -----

My sentiments exactly. I love blasting by these behemouth SUVs and giving them a shot of my oh so sweet pipe music --- all while getting 50-60 mpg.

In houston you can ride a bike all year long. And helments are optional.

I'll pilot a snowmobile, a dirt-bike or a wave-runner, but I have no desire to ride your rice-burner.

While I might agree with that when someone buys a Hummer or Lincoln Navigator, for most people an SUV was the best option available.

Most people can't afford a small car for commuting and a big car for shopping and family outings. They can only afford one family car, so they go with what works for them.

Besides, you aren't trash talking minivans, which have as much space as a medium SUV -- just different sheet metal. Sounds like you're the one who fell for the SUV marketing.

I'll pilot a snowmobile...

I've never been on a snowmobile in my life. I don't think I've ever actually seen one either except pictures and movies, of course.

Long-term the problem with these monster SUVs is they are going to be the commuter vehicles of the poor for the next 15 years. Because they will be so cheap to buy.

When I was in high school I bought several big American hulks left over from the 1970s -- because I could get an Impala for $150. Since I was making pizza at the time, it was all I could afford

Are you inviting me to meet your dad and go for a drive?

Well, not exactly.

Anyways, my dad is not a huge car enthusiast either. However, when asked, here's how he sums up his Bimmer:

"The I-Drive (which is BMS's f-ed up system for operating the stereo and other non-essential functions) is a piece of shit. However, in terms of power, ride, handling and comfort, the car is superb."

We have season tickets to UofM football. One of my dad's closest friends tailgates with us. Last year after a game, my dad and his friend drove to the west side of the state (near Grand Rapids) for a golf weekend. My dad had his friend drive the Bimmer as he had some work to get caught up on. My dad's friend is a big-time car enthusiast. At the following football game, I asked him what he thought of the Bimmer. His answer was:

"That car is wasted in your dad's hands."

"Carrera S"

Carrera 4S, thank you.
Maybe a nice Tesla next.

Dumb comment. :-) Does that include ALL SUVs? Even for people who want passenger capability AND the ability to load cargo, and can't afford both a truck AND a car?

I think people driving a Chevy Tracker, for example, hardly bought it because it was a status symbol. lol

OK now someone disagrees with you.

Goat,

I've never been on a snowmobile in my life.

they are an absolute blast, but you've gotta really dress for them - flying through the woods at 80 mph in sub-zero temperatures requires a lot of clothing.

My apologies.

I knew that and certainly didn't mean to snub your ride.

Porsche's "4" technology was downright revolutionary when the 959 debuted. What an incredible car that was, and still is.

A Generalization does not a Universalization make.

If you don't know what the words in a post mean, look them up in a dictionary before you decide to post in response.

Maybe then you won't get so excited when you misread somebody's statement and your responses will more directly address the post actually made, not the post you think you read.

If you're in the Northeast and a nervous driver (most women...) then knock yourself out. Especially if you have kids and a dog (cars are too small for traveling out of town).

Personally, I always made it around Buffalo just fine in my VW's, but I did appreciate the Jeep Cherokee (getting out of the driveway, pulling away from stops, etc).

That said, without fail, the majority of the retards I pass that have driven off of the road are without fail 4x4's.
Hint: They are no good in turns, and they don't stop any better...

Zat,

Excellent photos.

What's amazing to me is how timeless the body design was.

That is a good-looking car even by modern standards.

I love parking my Chevy Cobalt in the sea of soccer mom monoliths at the local Target.

Sorry, got a little crazy with the Post button

Feel pretty strongly about that, Ben?

;-)

Chair,

That said, without fail, the majority of the retards I pass that have driven off of the road are without fail 4x4's.

Many of their drivers mistakenly believe that they are invincible in inclement weather and drive accordingly.

PS - do me a favor and click my user profile. I took a page out of your book earlier today and am curious as to how I did. Trust me, if you scroll through my posts today, my inquiry will make sense to you.

Is anybody noticing that the market is beginning to help solve our fuel issues?

Not into the crotch rockets, have a cruiser and it goes fast enough.

I like the ride of the bike with a more comfortable ride.

JJ,

Get on a bike and take a little tour around the country side, smell the flowers, the growing corn, and you'll be hooked.

MW,

I've spent a few hours behind the wheel of my parents' '03 T-Bird (convertible). Believe me, I understand the visceral appeal that you are alluding to.

1 question: Is a bike discernably different than a convertible in the sense that you are describing?

Thanks for proving my point, you moron. Most people I know with an SUV needed space and power, or felt safer.

Of course, they aren't hauling four kids, a dog and a week of groceries all the time. That's why you see single commuters driving them to work.

If you live alone and eat canned soup then an Outback is adequate for you and your cat, but many of us have other people in our lives.

My greater point is that you keep trash talking SUV owners as not being as brilliant and enlightened as you think you are. People buy minivans for exactly the same reason: space and comfort.

I'm one of those tools, though I'm usually driving with the family. I bought a Suburban in September 2001 when I was shopping for a family van and they were cheap, and now it's paid off. Every time I gas up I feel like I'm doing my part for Osama Bin Laden.

Ugh.

We have been driving full-size vans for years. Recently we got fed up with spending more money every week on gas than on groceries and we purchased a Chevy Aveo. Five-speed manual transmission. Roll-down windows, push-down locks. Seats 4. 4-door hatch back. Comes fully equipped with a radio (AM/FM!) and a clock. Absolutely NO frills. My husband now spends $30 per week on gas as compared to $95+ per week when he drove the van. I use the van for local errands only. A quarter tank of gas has lasted me almost a month now in the van. Frankly, I do not understand why people aren't lining up to buy these sub-compact cars! The Aveo cost us $7800, no trade-in, no down payment! Amazing! And the oil companies can kiss my gas tank! LOL!

Chevy Aveo - A South Korean with a bow-tie.

Just months after the United States invaded Iraq Ford MOVED manufacturing into Syria and Sudan.
linky.

Someone please correct anything I get wrong, but wasn't Saddams Kuwait invasion what prompted Opec to change to price structure? And again just prior to the US invasion didn't Saddam sell Iraqi field rights to Russia and France, again threatening Opec to re-price?

And now the pipeline leads to Israel, bypassing United States entirely. To my knowledge Israeli have no rights tapping that resource, but Right-wing Americans are so easily duped into invading the most Democratic-leaning ME nation, transforming it into an unstable hellpit and thus handing all valuable oil into the hands of those who created this scenario for us - Israel.

Wait, they do have a presence - Abu Garib and Gitmo interrogators. But first they had to ensure that we didn't have our own translators - and they all are discharged from the US military, again just prior to invasion. Coincidence..

Now there is no "serious" competition for car fuel - corn-based ethanol isn't (which is very dubious emissions-wise) and now the price of oil per barrel has no limit.

The SUV "craze" was manufactured - people wanted more efficiency, not waste. Even today most car dealerships might have one or two hybrids on their lot. Nowhere NEAR the availability to salvage our economy.

By all means, destroy SUV dealerships.

Every time I gas up I feel like I'm doing my part for Osama Bin Laden.

Ugh.

Put the dildo back up your ass, that isn't "laughter" you are hearing.

"Every time I gas up I feel like I'm doing my part for Osama Bin Laden."

Then you are incredibly clueless as to where the US obtains the majority of it oil imports.

Riiiight.. Saudi interests don't play any part in Opec.

Clue phone - Israel benefits from al-Qa'ida.

"and guilty as well" ...this twit has to be a lib.

I'll bet many people are locked into their big ole suv's. The over extended dummies got iffy loans on iffy credit, with no money down ,and $3,000. cash for signing on the dotted line. Wait a little while...we will see countless crybaby articles....defaults .

Cue Danni........

Where the hell is this guy driving when he has to fill his fuel-guzzler up 3 times a week? I'm an SUV owner too (Jeep GC) but need it and it's capabilities for my job. And even I think I drive too much, but only fill up once per week (about $70). This guy has got to be a major asshat, who insists on living where he does, but probably has a super-long commute or drives for a living. DUUHHHH!

kerrin57 - why the 25mpg average on Chinese imported vehicles? What would benefit a conservative administration such as BushCo have any interests in lowering efficiency standards in trade? Perhaps this oil overpricing IS DONE PURPOSFULLY BY THIS OIL-FRIENDLY ADMINISTRATION?

SUV's ads were en force - not hybrids or higher efficiency standards - although those vehicles were sold to China, just not here in America.

No alternative energy or even trains have been instituted. Why take the solar panel initiatives from housing developments? Why indeed.

Liberals have attempted to point these facts out to you "conservatives", proving you bring a whore to culture, but you can't make her think.

People, people!! Thinking short-term is what got us into this mess! It's America's biggest problem. While I can understand drivers not wanting to drive their SUVs anymore, it makes no sense to SELL them! Think mid- to long-term, people! When the sh!t really hits the fan, these vehicles will make superior living quarters.

In the long-term, it's not the mpg that matters, it's the square footage...

FUNNY... PEOPLE LIKE RCADE....they scream about Bush.... oil corperation profits.....alternative fuels

but own the biggest gas guzzlers that can be put on the road...at the same time claim its for the family (like the family ride in the SUV enough to make a differance)

RCADE...you know you bought that gas guzzler for the status....and nothing else....if you really cared about anything stated above....you would have gotten rid of that SUV long time ago

Anybody who purchased an SUV, must have forgotten the first two arab oil embargoes. For years i've been flabbergasted over all the soccer mom's driving around in empty SUV's, one after another 9on the cell phone of course)

Obama says he knows you want to get out of them and into a Prius, but you can't because you can't get the financing. Kind of funny and hypocritical, coming from someone who blames wall street for the easy mortg. money.

But not to worry your savior has it all figured out. He just tax the US oil companies with a "windfall" tax, thereby stopping most all US exploration.

Then he'll kick in CAFE standards, and voila problem solved. Don't you see how simple it is?

Say it "Yes we can!!!"

RCADE...you know you bought that gas guzzler for the status....and nothing else....if you really cared about anything stated above....you would have gotten rid of that SUV long time ago

Please close the window you've opened in my soul. It's getting drafty.

I bought the SUV because I have three kids and the vans were wimpy girly cars compared to it. The idea that the car confers some status to me is absurd. If I wanted to overcompensate for the size of my penis I'd get a Harley.

Then you are incredibly clueless as to where the US obtains the majority of it oil imports.

All I know is that the Saudis and other Middle Eastern oil tycoons use some of their millions to fund extremist madrassas and fuel terrorism, so a portion of every dollar I spent gassing up the tank ends up making the world a more dangerous place. If you'd care to dispute this, be my guest.

"If I wanted to overcompensate for the size of my penis I'd get a Harley."

and lets not forget as we were reminded yesterday on the radio from noon to three....EST......
along the continental shelf there are multiple BILLIONS of barrels of oil available as well as several HUNDRED TRILLIONS of natural gas available......the gas is enough to service 60 MILLION homes for 160 YEARS and 85 per cent is NOT AVAILABLE.........and why? environmental terrorists and thier pups in the congress with the 'd's after their name
60 MILLION homes for 160 YEARS......

and DONT FORGET......keep those suvs rolling and use that gas use that gas use that gas.....

our goal next year is 12 BILLION DOLLARS IN FREE MONEY.....extra......billions of dollars we can use for whatever we want.......SURPLUS.....oh oh......someone make me STOP LaUGHING at you yankee bastards......oh oh....hee hee ha ha......

I was next to a Hummer on the freeway yesterday for a couple of miles. The young guy, wearing a Mr. T starter kit (lots of bling) looked over. I don't know if he could tell by the look on my face I was counting the dollars fly out his tailpipe.

Crotch rockets are pretty stupid unless you have really low self esteem..

Seems like you call everything stupid that you dont like or anything that you dont have or cant afford. Just because it doesnt fit your tastes doesnt mean it's stupid. Granted some people dont need a huge SUV. I personally like the towing of my 08 Tundra and the size of the interior, which no tin can can afford me. Gas hurts right now, but I have an 86 4runner that gets great miles to the gallon.

On the "Crotch rocket", it's just plain fun. Yes the gas is good, but I truly like riding my GIXXER. So if it isnt good for you, dont buy it, but as for your selfish comments, blow it out your ass

So, NOW we're getting clued into the fact that SUVs are extravagant pieces of shit? It's no wonder that the Rockefellers and their ilk look down on us like worms, and treat us as such.

The human race is going the way of the dodo bird and the three-toed sloth. Say goodnight, Gracie.

I am a fire breathing conservative, but anyone that hasn't seen this rise in gas coming for AT LEAST 5 years has a few screws loose. I've seen it coming since before 9/11. No sympathy for the big ol' Chevy/Ford Subdivision SUV's, you should've seen it.

Amen, Boortzpal. I should've known the days of cheap gas were over when the second plane hit the WTC.

Ha ha! RCade made a funny! FF for him!

A Maryland TV news report this morning had a story about autos being torched for insurance. It seems in that area claims are up 60% this year.

BOORTZ,

If you had really seen this rise in oil/gas prices years ago you should have made a fortune in the futures market, unless you were either afraid to put your money where your mouth is, or a big mouth liar.

Nope, just broke as a three-legged dog!! LOL
