The barracks aren't that bad, just because Felix Unger made a surprise inspection w/ white gloves. Some are older than others....but they're all accomidating. Get over it...please.

These were not soldiers in the field or in a combat zone. They are on US soil at a major base. The fact that you are so flip about the situation and try to make it sound like some type of macho endurance contest convinces me that it is you - not the "liberals" (gasp), who do not respect nor value our soldiers.

I lived in similar Barracks in Fort Ord-in California.
They weren't the Taj Majal-but-they were livable.
Of course-that was 36 Years ago.
It's CRIMINAL to force them to live in those conditions.
I can almost comprehend having them stay someplace like that in a war zone-no one's around to do any kind of maintenance.
But this is at freakin' Fort Bragg! Here in the States!

I must disagree Judas. I dont know how long it has been since you have been in the military, but this is most certainly NCO business. If the CSM needs money to keep the barracks together, then the boss has to get involved. Officers give resources, NCO's execute....

BOAZ....yea its up to the unit to maintain the barracks....but if the barracks is empty... and a unit arriving to a empty barracks....and the barracks are not to standard.....then that falls under the base general....the base general is responsible for the daily operation and maitenance of the base.....if base operation go bad or if buildings are falling apart....the base general has to answer why

It use to be that you left your living quarters pristine when you moved on , there was inspections , the white glove test , the military should go back to that .

The article didn't say, but is this the daily norm for these barracks? If so, it is unacceptable. But I get plumbing problems at home, too. I deal with them. My toilet seat has broken before. I fixed it and moved on.

When I was in the Naval Shipyards in Philadelphia in 1977 while my ship was going through an overhaul, we lived on an APL (never figured out what that stood for) for 6 months. It was basically a floating barge with beds. The beds were canvas cots on a frame, three high. The head had partitioned toilets, but the doors were missing on most of the stalls. The showers were either cold or steam -- practically impossible to get warm.

We were there from fall to spring. The heater hardly worked and some mornings we woke up with frost in our mustaches.

No, it wasn't the best place I ever lived, but somehow I managed to get through it. I was 22 YO at the time. It was sort of like an adventure. I guess I should have whined more, but I didn't know better I guess. C'est la vie. Next time around I'll be a bigger pussy and know to bitch and moan and call a TV network.
