There's no question that mistakes have been made and the job we're doing could be better, but we'e still losing lives to better their nation, among other things. I could be wrong, but I don't think I've heard many thank you's out of Karzi for giving his country a chance to be rid of the oppressors.

No Country can tolerate any Nation no matter how well meaning, to dominate them inside there own borders. I've heard him say thanks plenty of times. I've also heard him beg the international community to keep their words to provide the development funds they'd pledged. He and a lot of others sided with us, and the dust had barely settled when we lost interest in favor of our misadventure in Iraq.

We're lucky to have this guy. He's the closest thing to a moderate there is in Afghanistan, and doing a pretty good job keeping it together, all things considered. Lose him, and we end up with another Iraq PDQ - all the warlords will start jostling for power, and the whole country will fall into chaos. Without him, we'd be back to November 2001 in weeks.

Which would be just a perfect symbol of the Bush administration. Successfully invading Afghanistan and driving the Taliban out in a couple months was a magnificent achievement - and the last really successful thing the US did - the military Bush inherited from Clinton and every president before him. Then, Rumsfeld and Cheney and Bush started exerting their influence, and everything has gone to crap ever since. If they let Afghanistan fall back into chaos, I think you'd have a hard time pointing to anything this man touched that hadn't fallen apart.

Everlong, just how long should Karzai keep quiet and say Thank you before you feel he's justified in his criticizing the US for a lack of progress and continued occupation?

Outside parts of Kaboom and Khandahar, the warlords ARE running afghanistan, as they have done for decades. Fortunately they are on our payroll or getting fat from opium $$, but they are no less fundamentalist than the taliban. They also run the parliament.

If you feel there will or can be no knock on your door tonight it is because you haven't been paying attention.

All someone would have to do is call up your local autorities and tell them that you had 1) a meth lab, or 2) palygamous stuff, or 3) child pornography and they will not be a knock on your door because they will break it down.
