Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, unveiled plans on Monday to film its gun sales in the United States and create a computerized log of purchases in a bid to stop guns falling into the wrong hands.

This is a dumb idea, sure to backfire on Wal-Mart. Most people who shop at wal-mart are stupid cattle and that's why they don't notice the gazillion cameras on the front of every wal-mart. But gun nuts are way touchier about their privacy. They'll all freak out and spin conspiracies about how China plans on using this to double the value of the yen, or some equally insane theory. But, no matter how insane the conspiracy, it will still cost them profits from normal law-abiding citizens while criminals continue to buy guns from private owners because no background check is required for that kind of transfer.

I griped a bit more about this at
my website

DW, I'm curious to see if many of those "gun nuts", as you call them, the same people who say about phone line surveilence, if you aren't doing anything wrong then you have nothing to fear?

@Johnny Hotsauce

I should mention that I'm a gun nut, just to be clear. I am 100% critical of people surveilling me, especially wiretapping without warrants.

That doesn't change the fact that many of my friends will flip out about this. And I won't buy guns at WalMart if they follow through with this.

China wants to double the value of the Yen?

Well, they have to pay for those black helicopters somehow or the Egyptian Aliens will come back and remove the pyramids from our dollars, yo!

So in the last year, Wal-Mart has tackled such historically liberal causes as the environment, the high cost of prescription drugs and now gun control. How will liberals reconcile this with their inherent hatred of Wal-Mart? When will they start demanding such Wal-Martian practices to be adopted by other evil corporations like Target and K-Mart?

A publicity stunt by Wal-Mart which will cost them gun sales to LEGAL law-abiding Americans. It's very doubtful that criminals use legal means to obtain firearms.

What even stinks more than this new policy is the fact that antigun Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York was present when the policy was announced which really makes the stench unbearable.

Dear Joe,

Your check is in the mail. Thanks for all your help.

Sincerely,
Lee Scott
CEO Walmart Corporation.

How many people here hate Wal-Mart, and what are your reasons? Keep in mind I believe (as naive as I am) that people choose to work there, competition is good, and so on...

"...that people choose to work there (Wal-Mart), competition is good, and so on..."

A little tongue in cheek there hey Andyuhenet?

"Wal-Mart has tackled such historically liberal causes as the environment, the high cost of prescription drugs and now gun control. How will liberals reconcile this with their inherent hatred of Wal-Mart?"

Hatred for wal-mart is not inherent as you claim. Those who have refused to shop at wal-mart, and it's not just liberals, have their reaons for not doing so. Wal-Mart, by reducing waste, offering lower prices on medications and taking on more responsibility for their actions is simply them responding to the market.

If they make themselves into a better company because of consumer pressure to modify how they do business isn't that how a free market is supposed to work?

WalMart is the closest store, and I do shop there, but I'm selective about what I buy. I've beat their prices and found better selection at other stores.

People here are nice and helpful, so I see no advantage to the Greeter thing except to line up the carts.

Looking inside of their culture is an eye opener. It's like a corporate religion in of itself.

Look at this Missouri case of subrogation. WalMart could have entered the case as an interpleader and asserted their claim for not a lot of effort. They'd have gotten their money back for simply filing and justifying the expenses. They had to do an accounting anyway, and the doctors had to sign on to the plan to provide the treatment.

Their support would have bolstered the woman's claim. $400,000 can go pretty quick in a nursing facility, though hopefully she won't be prevented from SS disability. There's a difference between full pay and Medicaid beds in a nursing facility. Some of it has to do with diet, but also staff and decor.

Imagine living Ground Hog Day for real, and every day for the rest of your life you ask about your son only to be told that he is dead.

What WalMart failed to do was look after an employee who was terribly injured, maintain contact, show a bit of interest even if it was driven by their financial interest. That slight compounded the insult of WalMart then suing this woman for money.

Says a lot about how they really feel about their employees. Though based in Bentonville, we have two heirs living here in Boone County. This isn't their first gaff, but I'm glad they woke up and spared this woman. What I doubt is that there will be a correction in their culture.

So bad? Someone steals your identity/credit card info and buys a shotgun at Walmart on your name, and then commits robbery & murder the next day. The shotgun is recovered at the murder scene and traced back to the Walmart. There is obviously no police report on file that you reported the gun stolen, and you have not seen the fraudulent charges to your card yet, so also, not reported. At this point, the paper trail points to YOU and you are an obvious suspect in the police case. You live alone and were home that evening--no alibi. But, the video of the Walmart purchase of the shotgun shows it was in fact not you, which helps clear you of any wrongdoing.

Far fetched, but these are the arguments the government uses to sell surveillance to the public. Fighting crime. England is rampant with it, and people there feel they live under Orwellian conditions. Many were agianst it there, but after the London bombings, it ain't going anywhere. In some cases it helps fight crime, but I prefer my privacy...

GUN NUTS!!! Every violent act commited by a person with a firearm is BY DEFINITION an act of a nut with a gun.

The green-tooth crowd will parrot the talking points of Flush Rimjob and the NRA nutters, but they are full of shit when they spout their doctored statistics.

Nearly all gun crimes are committed with stolen guns (legally purchased by people too incompetent to own them and keep them out of the hands of thieves) or by legally purchased guns like the ones used at Virginia tech and nearly ALL the recent school shooting.

Clearly these pants pisser don't have the capacity for coherent thought of they wouldn't be posting this kind of bullshit.

More power to the Wal Marts and other gun retailers. They are only doing this because their lawyers are forcing them to. Next step they will stop all gun and ammo sales because the meager profits will be more than offset by lawsuits brought by families of victims of gun crimes traced back to guns sold by Walmart and others.

My 4 guns are sitting in the safe becoming more valuable by the day.

Gun nuts...you can't love them but you can't hit them in the head with a shovel either.

Ozark, does Walmart pay you well to apologize for them?

They should feed you better bullshit if you are going to spew it up on this board.

Walmart would still be ignoring the problem with that employee and her insurance and lawsuit nightmare if it wasn't for MSNBC and a half dozen newspapers threatening and carrying out the threat to publicize this travesty every day until the cretins at Walmart reversed their decision. It took about a week of being under the magnifying glass before they backed down.

Anyone who spends a dime at one of their stores after that deserves to be run down in the parking lot by a drunk in a SUV. An UNINSURED ILLEGAL ALIEN driving a stolen SUV.

I figured they already did film gun sales.

Good idea.

No story here.

I'll leave the hyperbole to you AXE since you seem so good at it.

I don't buy much at WalMart to begin with, and they are open 24/7 and it's only a half mile away so I don't intend to stop shopping there - SUVs be damned.

As for my "apology" I think I made it clear that the problem is the corporate culture and their failure to act responsibly in the liability case. As I see it the company embraced a personality cult in Sam Walton who I have faulted for investing in a separate corporation to finance the product of cheap Chinese goods on this "board" at least twice, and once fairly recently.

The heirs are too rich to care. It takes a lot of publicity to overcome their indifference, and obviously the corporate officers have only one concern and it's certainly not the employees.

But I was just responding to Andy and if you want to rant away fine - just don't bother me with your nonsense.

I think it would be kind of respectable of Wal-Mart to just STOP SELLING THE FUCKING THINGS if they're really concerned about them "falling into the wrong hands". Assholes.

Spud's never spent dollar one at Wal-Mart.

Prolly never will.

Filming Gun sales is actually a good idea provided the info is kept on disc and retrievable for a long time after the fact.

Most crime is committed with guns obtained illegally but it's still sommat.

Be Well.

/3:18 on the wet coast, Spud is exit, as ya do,
stage left.

YEAH!

What's the "liberals" at Wal-mart going to do next ---- Record all Explosives Sales too?

Sincerely

So I'll just drive out to a faw away town in my state, buy a gun. No one will know who I am in that town and the whole thing is pointless. I do beleive the check you ID any how and gather information about you when you buy it anyhow. If you buy it with a credit card or debit card well they can track you anyhow.....

whenever im looking to ask a question i figure
all the help is congregated around the moniters
so its about time they got around to sporting goods

I wonder if Hillary will stop buying all of her Bibles and guns at Wal-Mart now.

The world's a stage and everyone an actor.

Smile, you're on candid camera.

I buy my guns where everyone I know buys their guns...The street...I get me some crack too...

Because people don't kill people...
Guns do!

Little bit of trivia here:

I have worked for Wal-Mart...the gun counter is ALWAYS monitered by camera and the files for the film are stored 25 times longer that any other part of the store.

I like guns. I'm ok with this.

This may be news to a bunch of you. When you buy a gun you have to fill out the yellow federal form and they do an instant check with the FBI on you while you wait for your purchase to become final.

The form remains with the store that has the FFL but the feds can track the serial number from manufacture to point of purchase.

I suppose all the bitter rednecks who stupidly cling to their guns will have to comb their mullet before stepping into the spotlight at Wal-Mart.

-Barack Obama

Since it's a private company doing it there is nothing that can be done constitutionally.

Private transfers of firearms need to have background checks in some states like California. Oregon doesn't.

I never understood the hate about Wal-Mart - they have done so much to being low prices to the communities and have pioneered supply chain technology. You can save gas with a One-Stop-Shop rather than driving all around the city to indy stores, paying for parking, getting parking tickets....

People want to pay less but when a store offers things for less, they bitch.... Plebes.

johnny hotsauce , i'll give you a clue , as evidently you are clueless . The gubment can listen in on my phone calls all they want , they can read my email all they want , but when they start reading my thoughts , then is when I start having problems , that is why I don't buy into your brain fucked ideology of having your leftwing talking heads tell me what to think , freedom of thought has made tremendous strides in the world , liberalism , communism /marxism , socialism is the enemy of free thought .I won't purchase anymore weapons or ammo from wally mart , they should'nt have made this common knowledge if they were going to violate my Constitutional rights .It is none of wally's or the government's business what I do , or what I buy if I am not breaking any laws . Maybe the worthless law enforcement agencies should start enforcing existing laws , including the illegal alien laws , before they start harrassing real Americans .

Maybe WALMART....should check the licence and tags of all vehicles entering the property.....that way they are not servicing a car that be used to break the law.....hell walmart needs to do back ground check of all its coustomer entering the store to reduce crime and promote saftey

Rightnut, I just want to make sure I understand what you are saying since I obviously don't have a clue.

You say that Wal-Mart, a private entity, filming you purchasing a firearm while you are in their stores is violation of your Constitutional rights, the Constitution of course being a government document, but the government, which is an entity who's behavior is constrained by the Constitution is free go monitor whatever you say or write.

Am I reading you correct on that one?

I guess I'm still clueless because that's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard.
