China on Tuesday condemned the disruption of the Olympic torch relay in London and Paris, vowing it would not impede the Olympic spirit. "We express our strong condemnation of the deliberate disruption of the Olympic torch relay by 'Tibetan independence' separatist forces, who gave no thought to the Olympic spirit or the laws of Britain and France," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said. "Their despicable activities tarnish the lofty Olympic spirit."

Well if that's not the despicable pot calling the kettle black!

"DELAV3"...You fucking Idiot, your are an disgrace, fuck you ASSHOLE!!!!!! That you can equate someone trying to protest the Chinese Olympics to the Chinese who have KIlled untold Millions to hold on to there Country is a fucking Disgrace, AGAIN FUCK YOU!!!!

Eh, I tend to agree with China here. I means the Olympics aren't supposed to be political.....Let individuals do what they want, of course, and then get a face-full of mace and a billy-club upside the head. Frankly, most protesters are acting like children and are quite embarrassing. But they have the right....

As far as a boycott, I think the Dems calling for a boycott is stupid. The government should take a neutral stance.

If individual athletes want to boycott, let them. Otherwise trouble happens when you get governments involved.

China surely has gone down the capitalist trail since Chairman Mao was da boss. They occupy another country (Tibet) as we've occupied countries, Iraq being only the latest. Israel occupies Palestine. Germany did a bit of that half a century ago.

Anyway, protesting occupations is honorable if it's China in Tibet. If it's Israel in Palestine, protesting my ramming some hijacked airplanes into buildings is deemed "terrorism." Sometimes it's tough to keep up. herm

CeleryDick(tm), that anger you show every single post is going to make you explode. Which would mean justice is alive and well, btw.

"Otherwise trouble happens when you get governments involved."

Like invading other countries that pose no threat to you, and then staying there a hundred years.

Spengler from atimes.com has a really good idea about turning Nepal into a Theme Park....

Poignant and humorous:

Fuck - Tibet, not Nepal - shit....

I hear Hillary and Barack have combined their efforts to call for a boycott of the first 15 minutes of the cermonies and all skeet shooting events...

That'll teach Squinty a lesson...

fuck china..

Bush calmly and correctly calls the Olympics a sporting event, which he won't use as a political football. How presidential of him, and I say that with no sarcasm. I oppose the neocon agenda, but the dumbocrats always manage to lose my support with their absurd hysteria.

Newyawker-
It's "absurd hysteria" to make even the most feeble gesture regarding the fact that China is a repressive Communist regime?

The House just passed some resolution to send China a letter to sit down with the Dali Lama and talk out their differences.

Once Jimmy Carter--always Jimmy Carter.

"RIDE ON"... You may be right I get on to give my Opinion an the first writer says that those who protested should "KNEEL IN FRONT OF A DITCH AN SHOT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD" yea I shouldn't get mad with that......What would it take for you to get annoyed, I know how about setting them in Ovens an burning them, you know like brother HITLER did, come on no harm intended....

Celi--He's a troll.

You are really having some spin outs lately. Take time to breathe.

I agree with you that the poster made an really stupid &*^%$*@ comment.

Dumbya won't mingle sports and politics if the political atrocity is committed by Our Guys, the Chinese. Not only dedicated capitalists feeding the Wal-mart machine, but a people who own our IOUs and may call in the loan some day. Were the Olympics in Havana, you can damwell bet Bush would be boycotting clear to Guantanamo. herm

The House just passed some resolution to send China a letter to sit down with the Dali Lama and talk out their differences.

But they support Bush's refusal to talk to Saddam, Iran, Taliban, Syria, Lebanon...... Get the picture.

Relax a little. Maybe
this will help?

I wrote this the other day on another thread about the Olympic torch run but will say it again. A number of years ago in Los Angeles I saw the Olympic torch being passed when the runners came thru my hometown and ran a few miles down Glenoaks Blvd. It was thrilling to see and be a part of it.

There will ALWAYS be some political issue to protest every time the Olympics are held from now until doomsday. If it's not Tibet this time, it will just be some other cause for something else in another four years.

Stop politicizing the Olympic games and just enjoy them.

BETELG,

No, that's not what I am saying at all. I do not support the victimization of Tibetans. But I also don't support an orchestrated political campaign to use the Olympics and the Tibetan cause as a political weapon. I don't mean the protesters, they are cool. But politicians like Nancy "impeachment's off the table" Pelosi and HRC? Pleeeeease. Really, does the mass media/politicians really give a rat's ass about Tibet, or is it an opportunity to rub China's nose in some shit. C'mon, let's get real.

Why not boycott all Chinese products? Yeah right, Walmart Junkies. Recall our diplomats? No, let's use and abuse the Olympics. Makes about as much sense as boycotting Chinese food.

Doesn't everybody lose with this tortured logic? This distracts and marginalizes the athletes, especially the USA! We whip everybody's butts in the Summer Games--our track & field, swim team, etc. I bet most of their stomachs are turning watching their once-every-4-year chance to shine turning into a circus.

The international communtity endorsed these upcoming China Olympics via the IOC. There is the blunder and that is where the accountability rests. China has been blocked for years based on their human rights record. If there was this much hysteria when China got selected, I bet the pressure may have caused the IOC to relook their decision.

Really, I greatly question the sincerity of those screaming bloody murder for the Tibetans when, as Herm so eloquently pointed out, like peoples in other regions, such as the Palestinians are almost completely overlooked. I would certainly rather live in Tibet than N. Korea, Gaza/West Bank, many places in Africa, etc. Oh, yeah. Doh. I would rather live in Tibet than Iraq.

But I will concede I may have given Dubya more credit than he deserves. I guess it's hard to criticize Chinese human rights in any forum when you're standing on top of a million Iraqi corpses.

As Uncle Dick says: China can go fuck itself.

Although the Chinese government might just be the most corrupt regime in the world, on this point I actually agree. LEAVE THE FREAKING TORCH ALONE, ASSHATS!

China Protests the Protesters?

Ha! Spud Protests the Chinese Protests of the Tibetan Protesters!

FUCK CHINA.

If Frisco can get their shit together tommorow and embarrass the Chinese government once more then it'll be 3 strikes and the torch is outta there!

The first two strikes happened in London and
Paris

(The city not the enormously cootered one)

While Spud calls fer a complete boycott of these ill-advised Olympics Spud also sees the usefullness in simply boycotting the Opening Ceremonies.

In the Chinese Culture the concept of "Face" is all important. In the West we tend to talk about "losing face" but we rarely talk about "showing face". The latter term refers to what the Chinese expect and want which is to say World Leaders literally showing their faces at the Olympic opening cermonies thus "giving face" (no jokes now) to the Chinese government. No show equals a massive loss of face. The Chinese take this shit much more seriously than most folks in the West appreciate. Good, thinks Spud.

Fuck them murderous ChiCom bastards with a sharpened pungi stick.

No face for you!

Be Well.

People are going about this the wrong way. Don't attack the poor runner on the street!

Bombard the torch-bearer with water balloons from the sidewalks and rooftops.

More effective, no reasonable defense from it, and pretty much zero chance you'll get arrested.

China's wake up call. DING DING! The world doesn't think that highly of what you're doing in Tibet. WAKE THE FUCK UP, ASSHOLES.

The Chinese have an awful lot of nerve. Despicable best describes the mass murders they perpetrate on their own people.

THE EARTH IS OVERWEIGHT..THE CHINESE got to stop fucking...but how to tell them not to.....

The last time I checked the earth didn't have fat rolls a plenty,

Larry Mohr

Daffy Duck to Peking

/obligatory.

Be Well.

Hopefully, Israel will destroy Iran soon.

"In the West we tend to talk about "losing face" but we rarely talk about "showing face". "

I thought in the West it was all about "sucking face" (and other bodily parts).

Phhht, what do I know...

CCP: We are shockedshocked! at these disruptions!
*now send the bill for the bullets to the families of those we shot for protesting*

Interesting how the split on this post is ironing out.

While China's government is a blight on the planet in their heavy handed tactics for control it should directly have no impact on the torch itself.

protesters have the right to assemble and protest the acts china is perpetuating on Tibet but they DO NOT have the right to physically assault or physically harm the torch or the people carrying it. These "protesters a.k.a. thugs" need to be arrested if they do this. They give all peaceful protests a bad name and do nothing to further their cause.

Why don't the chinks take the torch up to Canada and run around? It's not like there would be a problem.

Do you think the Chinese even know there are protests going on? Not the government, but the average 'joe'?

This is like the wok calling the pot sloped.

Who cares? The Olympics is only a decade or so away from crumbling into a heap of irrelevancy, bureaucratic bloat, and corruption, in much the same way the United Nations has since the mid 1990's. Bunch of 2nd and 3rd world mooks looking for props and selling an agenda.

Does anyone actually watch the Olympics like they used to?

And as far as politicizing the games: except for Helsinki, I can't recall an Olympics that did NOT take place on a stage of political turmoil of some sort. See first paragraph, last line.

NewYawker says it perfectly.

Great posts!

China is frantically trying to drum up support right now. Much like a certain administration we have all come to know here at home, the Chinese decided that the best strategy to gain support is by chastising and demonizing any and all dissent. Interesting strategy.

Leave the f'n torch alone. Don't boycott anything. Let sports be sports. Also, let people assemble for political reasons...so long as they don't commit crimes. And tell the Chinese gov't to cool it with the posturing. No one actually believes they are a victim in all of this. The athletes are the only potential victims. If China doesn't make money off of being a host, then tough...no one ever said making money was an entitlement, and the customer is always right.

And when the Chinese are listening to the national anthem for the 100th time this summer, I have no problems with individual athletes making any personal statements they feel necessary. It's their stage, after all. And people are not blind. Sometimes they actually care about things greater than themselves.

World Wide condemnation is important for the Chinese to learn what the people of the World think. For those on the Right an for those of you who think that to protest the Olympics will do no good, take a look at South Africa.

The Republician Party was on the wrong side of History in the battle to free South Africa's Blacks, an if President Bush appears at the Opening Ceremonies with out as much as a protest he an his Party will once again be on the wrong side of History....Something they should be used to I guess...

Oh great. A culture that allows, let alone encourages, the abandonment of girl babies is calling legitimate protest 'despicable'? Yeah sure. However, when it comes to despicable behavior, I guess the Chinese know whereof they speak....

"""Really, I greatly question the sincerity of those screaming bloody murder for the Tibetans when, as Herm so eloquently pointed out, like peoples in other regions, such as the Palestinians are almost completely overlooked. People in other regions are not under china's thumb, as is the case for tibet. Regardless, for the protesters, tibet is but one of the symptoms of a more general human rights abuse issue.

Bring the olympics to israel, and see what happens...

I wonder how many of these protesters will continue to protest once the Olympics have passed.

The Tibetan cause: Just the next bandwagon for these "activist" douches to jump on simply for the sake of "protesting" something.

"These "protesters a.k.a. thugs" need to be arrested if they do this. They give all peaceful protests a bad name and do nothing to further their cause."

I can't judge the motives of the protesters but the risk of arrest has always been part of what a person risks when choosing to protest. I think that is specifically why they do things that they know are illegal, such as climbing a bridge with a banner. It is to demonstrate that they are willing to go to jail in order for people to notice that there are people who care about this issue and hopefully to generate interest in an apathetic public.
Did Martin Luther King give all other protesters a bad name when he was arrested???
