The desertions of more than 1,000 Iraqi soldiers and policemen, including least two senior field commanders, cast fresh doubt on the effectiveness of the American-trained Iraqi security forces.

Weed 'em out. Now, just so they can't sign up again!

Why couldn't they have joined the Iraqi Air National Guard or have "other priorities" like a good GOPper if they really didn't want to serve their country? I'm sure they could have found a doctor who would have said they had nasty butt boils and gotten a job on radio.
I'm betting these guys were trained by RudiG's buddy Kerik.

The Pentagon has been extremely reluctant in giving Iraqi security forces the best equipment they need because they're afraid it'll end up in militia hands.

Seems like they got one thing right.

Northguy,

Or, maybe they could go smoke doobies at Oxford?

Jon-only if they didn't invade two countries and declare themselves a "War President".
And of course, only if they didn't fail in both those wars.

when will you get tired of being lied to?

"1,000 Iraq Forces Deserted in Basra"

YEAH!

And today:

Feith: "We invaded Iraq because we feared they'd attack us"

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Fools leading Fools is all this is!

Jon's not being lied to, he's getting the Divine Truth from God's OTher Son, Dubysus.

Iraq is on the verge of being the biggest military victory in history and 25 million Iraqis are going to sing God Bless America around just one more corner and through one more well-lighted tunnel.
Just ask him.
Like the other Ryker, from Star Trek, his Fearless Leader has said "make it so". And His will be done.

And the irony of the last week was that it wasn't Al Sadr surrendering. He merely called off his forces after urging from Iran.

AU, as you watched this debacle unfold, did it make you wonder if Rummy is advising maliki? It had all the markings of a Rumsfailed plan.

"Like the other Ryker, from Star Trek"

YEAH!

That's funny --- I thought the handle (and the retarded approach employed) referenced that guy with a drinking problem from that Movie called Airplane.

It's not so much a desertion as the Iraq military absenting themselves from their day job to work with for their favored employer.

from the little i have read on this it appears that maliki caught his allies unawares he notified us saturday morning something was going to happen, without specifics and on monday he had the tanks rolling into basra, he was trying a show of force that he was the big cock on the block. funny how things backfire on you.

october 1, 2008 there are provincial elections to be held. These provincial elections will establish the councils etc that will decide whether Iraq breaks into a soft partition or remains a strong central govt.

al sadr's strength grows in the south and he is for a strong central govt. Maliki was attempting to marginallize sadr, cause he realizes that come Oct 1, if sadr isnt marginalized, then sadr's group will win heavily in these areas, thereby destroying the dream of a soft confederacy in iraq.

the result will be a stronger sadr in iraq's parliament, with eventually somekind of timetable for US withdrawal from Iraq.

Iraq wont be pushed out by violence but by the political actions of the iraqi people, and that will toll the death knell of bush's policies. Of course, with out our troops in iraq, oil prices will jump, but that is another one of those unforseeable results.

Yea, I have read differing views on all this, but it appears to me this was a "message" from Al Sadr to Al Makiki. Just in case Al Makiki was thinking he was in control or something like that. What a mess.

the US wont be pushed out of...

Wow-the surge worked so well these guys got some time off!

They're standing up! GWB.
They're standing up and walking towards the militia.
They're standing up, facing the militia.
They're standing up, facing the militia and handing them their guns.
They're sitting down, drinking tea with the militia.

Mission Accomplshed, for a second or two.

For a defining moment in Iraq, to quote the Definerer-in-Chief,this one hurled chunks.

Mission Acomplished.

better fringes at blackwater

Just 1,000?

We must be turning a corner!

There goes 30million in training equipment and misappropriation of funds. Add to that their true fighting value and that comes to a tidy $30,000,001.25.

Per the UCMJ that's cause for the death by firing squad in a time of war....

They'll be back on the Iraqi payroll by now.

Truth is, W was correct.
This IS a defining moment in Iraq history.
The definition is "These folks will never stand up."

..."You forgot Poland".

Summary of the Iraqi government's recent offensive:

"To all militants in Basra: You have three days to lay down your arms!"

"Um.. Okaaaay, you aren't laying down your arms, are you? Please lay down your arms???"

"Still not laying down your arms, huh? Didn't want to do this but you forced my hand.... Cease fire! Cease fire!"

I'm sure Iraqis were impressed.
