Plenty of oats for the bull. If the fuckers wouldn't have knocked my mailbox over with the County snow plow, I would have gladly paid.

Ya never really own you own home.
So this guy prob worked , bought his land, paid various income taxes, and could have paid land taxes for 40 of his 60 years. Gov will take his land for $5,647 ...prob less than some "po" non working folk have collected with sect8 ,medicaid, and foodstamps in 2007.
What a deadbeat old bastard this guy must be.

"Ya never really own you own home"

Well duh. The banks own title to something like 95% of homes in the US at the moment

I've never agreed with property taxes - it's too much like a monarchy where the government owns all the land and we simply rent it from them.

Seriously - five grand? They've spent more than that already on OT for that SWAT team. Much better to let him live in "his" home until he dies and then confiscate the land.

"I've never agreed with property taxes - it's too much like a monarchy where the government owns all the land and we simply rent it from them."

There have always been property tax in some form virtually everywhere. Out in the former communist countries it is a flat stamp tax of 5-6% paid upon purchase with no additional annual taxes although they are thinking about changing this.

It's called being part of the country.

LMAO!!! That was REALLY funny! I'm still laughing

FF for ya too

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Thanks!

Do you suppose he made $109 million in the last 7 years? If he did, he shouldn't have any problem turning loose of 33.8 million to pay the feds.

Attempted Clinton deflection.

Well duh. You owe taxes on it for as long as there is a government. Miss a few years and it's gone even if you have paid the bank off.

Well DUH........... yourself

Wonder how the IRS will collect. Burn his house? Shoot his dog?

I know, but I never liked the idea. The first taxes the founding fathers implemented were property taxes and I think they did a wonderful job, all in all. But I still don't like the idea.

I mean seriously - taking your house? Your castle if you don't pay the rent? Has to be a better idea....

Why didn't the bastards who taught civics class in school tell us that civilization, "being part of the the country", freedom, etc, etc meant extortion?

I need to look it up:

civilization

Main Entry: civilization
Pronunciation: si-v'-l'-z-sh'n
Function: noun
Date: 1772
1 a: a relatively high level of cultural and technological development; specifically : the stage of cultural development at which writing and the keeping of written records is attained b: the culture characteristic of a particular time or place
2: the process of becoming civilized
3 a: refinement of thought, manners, or taste b: a situation of urban comfort

Yeah, I kind of figured it wasn't there. They seem to have left out the part about do the speed limit, pay your parking tickets and taxes, wear your seat belt or we will kill you, I wonder why . . .

Being "part of the country" has nothing to do with civilization, at least try to make your straw men vaguely relevant.

We could easily give up all property taxes. We would also have to give up the idea of owning anything we couldn't physically defend.

Property rights are established through government (or clan, or tribal elder, whatever) that formally recognizes that the thing is yours. If someone tries to take it, you have a right to have the government on your side to get it back - it's one of the main reasons courts and volumes of contract law exist. It's how you can own a piece of property based entirely on words written on a deed registered at the courthouse, as opposed to surrounding it with barbed wire and guard dogs. Property taxes establish and maintain the system for this. Granted, they're used by officials to pay for all kinds of other things as well, but it's never going to be cost-free.

If you would prefer to live in a place where the land belongs to anyone with enough guns to take it and hold it, I'd suggest sunny Somalia.

Nogo,

How do you expect governments to be financed? Monopoly money?

People like you wanted lower taxes. Now you got them along with increased parking tickets, speeding tickets, seatbelt tickets, and everything else imaginable to cover the shortfall in tax revenues.

"If you would prefer to live in a place where the land belongs to anyone with enough guns to take it and hold it, I'd suggest sunny Somalia."

Argh,

Yes, the no tax Ron Paul(ites) seem to want to go back to fuedalism. I say give them Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona. Fence them in and watch some kick ass reality entertainment.

Short story-

My brother is a Republican, hates all taxes, all government, and all rules that apply to him. He came with me one night when I took my car in for an emissions test.

The facility stays open until 8 twice a week. There was about a 20 minute wait, because only 1/2 of the bays were open.

My brother goes berserk, complaining that his taxes pay their salaries, we shouldn't have to wait, why aren't the other bays open, this is all bullshit, we work hard for our money, etc.

It doesn't seem to occur to him that if the other bays were open, they'd be paying twice as much to keep it open late, and they keep it open late as a service specifically for us taxpaying workers who can't take off during the day. Personally, I was just glad of the convenience.

The truly ironic thing is that he's lived all his life in one of the richest counties in the country, and is accustomed to a level of services so high that he makes snarky remarks anytime we leave about the poor roads, high crime and stupid people. He doesn't seem to get the connection between the investment via taxes and the high standard of living.

The only difference between our government and a communist one is that the communist government owns the property and allows the people to work it. 'We' are ALLOWED to think we own property until we cannot pay the taxes on it and then they take it away from us.

The fact is that you can inherit property that has stayed in your family for generations, since BEFORE the founding the the US government, AND upon inheritance you cannot come up with the tax monies you lose something your family owned for hundreds of years.

"The fact is that you can inherit property that has stayed in your family for generations, since BEFORE the founding the the US government, AND upon inheritance you cannot come up with the tax monies you lose something your family owned for hundreds of years."

MGST,

People need opportunities in order for America to be "The Land of Opportunities". If people can accumulate and inherit tax free there will be nothing left and a state far worse than Communism to live.

I grew up in Richland County. This standoff could go on for awhile.

The part of Wisconsin is a real impoverished area. $5,600 is a lot of money for those folks.

Here is what I have a problem with. Here at the beach (Topsail, Surf City, etc.,) you have people who have owned their homes for decades. Were born and raised there. So recently they did a re-evaluation of the properties based upon the magical "housing bubble" (which now everyone accepts has bust and is pissing air like a drunk against the wall at closing time) So they perhaps bought their properties for 30K or so. The county here recently re-evaluated them for 450K+. So, how can someone on social security pay those taxes? OH! Guess what, they can't so they have two choices sell their family home, or allow the County to come in and foreclose for tax purposes and profit 300K on a 5K tax bill (not accurate figures of course but you get my drift). It is UTTERLY obscene!

I still don't like it. It makes sense, but there are too many bad examples of property taxes gone wrong. Prop 31 (?) in Cali was a good thing....

"upon inheritance you cannot come up with the tax monies you lose something your family owned for hundreds of years."

"Death Taxes" again? Jeeze. Give it a rest. You make it sound like Ma and Pa Joad are gonna lose the farm. You know the first $2million were tax-free under the old system, and for the "onerous" rates to really kick in, you have to be talking about something like $5-7 million. No one's going to the poorhouse because they inherit too much money.

Besides, I got to say, I have a lot of respect for people who, by virtue of their own hard work and risk taking, become wealthy. I fully expect them to make sure their kids are set up in life as well as possible. But at some point, even though an inheritance is legally yours, don't come crying to me about how you've "earned" it. Just because great-grandpa's hog farm is now the perfect place for the new Walmart doesn't make you some hard working entrepreneur.

The county here recently re-evaluated them for 450K+

Are they worth $450K+? If they are, pay the taxes. Take out a reverse mortgage, or get a home equity loan - or sell, and keep the equity yourself. If it's not worth that, challenge the assessment. I really don't see the problem. There are billions of people in the world who'd love to have this horrifying dilemma.

more bullshit..

Furio: I believe that there could actually be one or two people on the left in this country who possibly might not agree with you, but I could be wrong. Maybe all those on the left also believe that the 'state' should in the end be the 'ONLY ONE'.

its a bullshit tax that gives no value..

Well Legio, this should be perfect for you then. They don't have to pay property taxes there either. At least, not to the government, anyway.

"Furio: I believe that there could actually be one or two people on the left in this country who possibly might not agree with you, but I could be wrong. "

I'm just paraphrasing Theodore Roosevelt. Sure everyone hates paying for anything but they would be crying much worse if the system didn't require it.
