The smaller user base buys the larger one? BushCo's Justice Department LOVES Corporate consolidation, because their bosses in the Corporate media love it. Consolidation was forbidden in th eoriginal licensing agreements. The Justice Department's official based their decision on the argument that Sirius and XM DO NOT COMPETE. How ridiculous is that?
One company, one national mindset. Its not enough that they reduce thousands of stations, costs and jobs throughout the fifty states. They gotta cut the operating costs for national broadcast from two to one. The next step will be to go the way of subscriber TV, get the listeners to pay extra and listen to commercials anyway. How stupid is that? XM was already on that path when Sirius began broadcasting music commercial free forcing XM to follow suit.

What a crock of sh*t. They do compete. Look at the stock history. Somehow Bush got involved and Sirius set him up with more oil revenue.

I hope Opie & Anthony get to go head to head with Howie. Should be interesting.

This is way cool. I used to have a Sirius account when they had Air America, but when they dropped them, I canceled. Still have the receiver, so now, with all that XM has to offer, it might be worth it to sign up again. Also I got the boom box which cranks some great bass, you can plug your ipod into it. So Rock On SiriXums

I actually have no problem with this. It's a privatly owned, pay for medium that I assume uses private satellite transmissions.

This isn't a monopoly--it opens the door for all those other satellite radio stations in the competition. Wait...what?

Both companies are on the ropes, teetering towards bankruptcy. The IPOD is killing them. And some here act like they have a monopoly. When you turn on your car, what's playing? AM, FM, CD, Ipod, or sat? CLEARLY they do NOT have a monopoly on your "ear"....

Who gives a shit. Satellite radio is a waste of money.

I have serius in the car and on the computer at home, xm on the satellite dish for the TV. I rarely listen to regular radio except for talk any more. But hey, now after the merger a bunch or right wing billionaires can buy all the stock of the new company and turn it into Clearchannel-satellite and put nothing but right wing propaganda on and claim it gets the ratings because its on all the channels. Just another monopoly. I expect a few more parting "gifts" from the right before they are finally driven from office. They will do as much damage to America as they can before they go.

"Who gives a shit. Satellite radio is a waste of money." And NOBODY will ever "pay" for television......now that's a real monopoly, you can't even pick up stations with antennas anymore, there's tons of static...now we're all going to HAVE to get an HDTV or get a converter box.....that's a monopoly.

The only thing satellites are good for is to guide bombs toward all of mohammed's little idiots, so we can send them on the way to their 72 virgin goats.

Satellite radio is a waste of money. Posted by 726 Everyone says this before they have it. Once they get it, its one of the greatest inventions ever. From 97-2000 I was driving with family or friends from Tallahassee, FL to upstate NY at least 3 times a year and back again. If I had satellite radio back then the drives would have been a lot easier to deal with...

I have to admit, I really like Satelitte radio. You can have the commercials and programming that come with free radio. I have XM and am excited about all the Sirius stations. I need more Kimock and Sirius has it!

Why some of you are upset by this and are bashing Bush over it I have no idea. BOTH of these companies are struggling and have been since they began. I have XM Radio and I love the idea of the two merging. What could be better for the consumer than getting more stations and variety?
Posted by everlong at 2008-03-25 01:03 PM | Reply | Flag: Flag: (Choose)FunnyNewsworthyOffensiveAbusive
"What could be better for the consumer than getting more stations and variety?" Nothing, but when the new company has no competition why would they offer you more stations and better variety. At least down here in S. Florida the regular radio is so pathetic that we will buy Sirius or XM almost no matter what they offer.

Well, considering XM has contracts with certain people and organiztions and Sirius has them as well, i.e. the NFL, are you saying they're going to try to get out of contracts just becuase they no longer want to offer them? If they don't keep a good product then people will quit using them. Hell, I keep my XM Radio almost for the comedy station alone, add the NFL from Sirius to that and I'm a happy guy. But you're right, they'll probably prefer paying off multi-million dollar contracts, like the one's with Howard Stern, just so they can screw the customer over.

"When you turn on your car, what's playing? AM, FM, CD, Ipod, or sat?" Posted by DavetheWave Sat. Always. XM in fact. Portable satellite receiver so I can move it from my car to my truck to my RV to my home system, even to my pocket when I walk/hike/bike (though the little lipstick sat antenna attached to my hat or helmet has kind of a techo-dork look to it). FM drove me away years ago with endless repetition of top 40 or songs that I have heard a thousand times before, and never-ending ads trying to sell me crap and more crap. Nor do the FMers have any decent new alternative music to listen to. CDs are expensive, bulky (relatively), and end up also being repetitive, causing the purchase of even more. I spend enough time with my one-eyed mistress in the basement. I do not need to add yet more endless hours reviewing and downloading music to an I-Pod or some other portable device. The sat at least gives me a huge range of music choices from Trance to Chill to C&W to Big Band to Folk to Classic R&R, to Blues, to R&B, to Jazz to pick-your-genre (but never, ever (c)rap - not in my ears), with practically no yak-and-chat, no ads on the music channels, and I can get the same sound tunage coast to coast. It is well worth the $12.95 a month.

"Satellite radio is a waste of money." Posted by 726 And you base this informed opinion on???

BushCo's corrupted Justice Department okays another monopoly typa deal? This time while claiming that XM and Sirius aren't competitors? Okay, it's officially gone beyond "How dumb do they think we are" and is now a case of "Yeah, we're fucking totally corrupt wot are you gonna do about, ya pussies?!" With more and more people in the population the number of voices heard on public airwaves and on sattelite should be increasing as well. In a healthy democracy this would be the case. America is no longer a healthy democracy. Consolidation of media outlets into fewer and fewer hands betrays a larger trend of media manipulation of public opinion by almost entirely corporate sources with an agenda that is the anti-thesis of the long term needs and wants of the American people. And the dumbing down and corruption continues. And so it goes. Be Well.
