Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Saturday, March 15, 2008

Faten Saad knew she wasn't in a typical Wal-Mart when she saw an end-of-the-aisle display featuring Mamool. Boxes of the date-filled, whole wheat cookie from the Middle East welcomed the 21-year-old Lebanon native into the international aisle of the new Wal-Mart store in this Detroit suburb known as the capital of Arab America. Aisle 3, which also features Eastern European and Hispanic food, represents many of the 550 items geared toward Arab-American shoppers in the store that opened last week.

Nothing new about this in Los Angeles -- our supermarkets look like the cafeteria at the U.N.

I love it, Chris. I'm sure you do as well.

Try driving North on Western Ave. from the Santa Monica freeway. That's like the U.N. as well.

Look at the stuff on display for St Patricks day....big deal WallyMart is interested in your bucks only.

Drive down Vermont; you'd swear you were in Seoul.

Well food is fine--when you walk in the restroom and see footbaths---Beware.

Hmm...forcibly soothed. We'll check it out, sir.

Walmart to local merchants:

We have no desire to remove your business from competing with us. It is however good business and we will of course run your foreign asses right out of town. Adios mother fucker.

I love Walmart and Sam's Club. I buy everything I need there. If I can't find it there I probably don't need it. I just bought a 50 inch plasma HD television at Sam's for $1196. If Wal Mart was a woman, I would marry her. Knowing that libs don't like her makes her even more delicious to me.

Now if Walmart will just start carrying possum jowls and white lightning.

Yea you sound like one of those conservatives that would sell his mom for a quarter. Wal Mart sells products low priced on the backs of its workers. Its where less than 40 hours a week constitutes a full week which means no benefits, and those that have benefits usually do so at the expense of the taxpayer. For more on Wal Mart :

Wally World can put in whatever they want...private enterprise.

"Its where less than 40 hours a week constitutes a full week which means no benefits,..."

Did those workers know that when they accepted the jobs? Just in case you don't know..Lowes, Home Depot...lots of others all do the same. Many workers start out in those jobs and advance to full time with benefits. Quit whining, earn something by merit.

Spud actually likes going into the newish international aisle at the local supermarkets. You find some great stuff there that was never available before. Back when Spud was a kid the fresh fruit section of a typical supermarket consisted of apples, oranges, grapes, plums, watermelons (only in the summer) and grapes. Nowadya you get an incredible variety of different types of stuff. Just the other day Spud saw a story about how a national department store chain was adding a Saree department to their womens wear section. Legal Immigration done in sane amounts giving folks and communities time to assimilate is a blessing. Over-immigration (especially the illegal kind) without assimilation is a nightmare.

Be Well.

Was the stuff made in china?

If Wal Mart was a woman, I would marry her.

So I'm guessing that the phrase "Fuck Wal-Mart" has a slightly different meaning to you.

LOL nice silver

Oh and CC Trader Joe's are you kidding me? That place sucks they have such a collection of crap that it boggles the mind. Whole Foods is the place to go twice the selection, cleaner, neater and cheaper.

Oh and don't belive the hype about how badly wal-mart treats their employes, I have had several conversations with employees of my local wally world and for the most part the good hard workers are happy with their benifits, pay and hours. The only unhappy ones seem to be the short term help that most likely to be bitching and moaning and for the most part they seem about worthless anyway.

"Quit whining, earn something by merit."

Twice the selection, three times the square footage, four times the price.

Of course they knew it when they accepted those jobs. The difference here between Wal Mart and those other companies you mentioned is that the majority of workers at WalMart work less than a full week. Yes those other companies do have "part time" employees but I challenge you to show me where the companies you mention employ most of their workers at less than 40 hours. The other point is your comment of earning something by merit. Walmarts job culture is something like water going through a pipe that simply leads out the other end. I know first hand from people that work at Home Depot that fifteen and sixteen dollars hr plus bonus and overtime are common and include benefits. I think if you took the time to address the links I referenced even you could not condone those tactics.

Jo, Um no whole foods is cheaper than trader joes by a decent little margin. I supose there might be some things that trader joes is cheaper on but for a full basket of goods to full basket of goods whole foods will kick their butt.

Rez,

I belive that most of what has been claimed about wal-mart was particular stores and managers. The fact is in retail a good manager can make a huge difference in stores. Trust me I worked retail for 7 years. Some good companies to work for sucked because my manager sucked. Some that had bad reputations were not that bad because of good managers. The thing is retail is always hiring and if you are worth a damn you can jump stores till you find one with a good manager. Oh course if you are a worthless employee all managers will be crappy and eventualy you will run out of places that will take you.

"I know first hand from people that work at Home Depot that fifteen and sixteen dollars hr plus bonus and overtime are common and include benefits. I think if you took the time to address the links I referenced even you could not condone those tactics."

The Home Depot where my wife works, a new one, has about ninety employees, MOST of them part time, working less than forty hours/week. She doesn't know of a single one making fifteen and sixteen dollars per hour outside of senior managers. She is one of the highest paid in kitchen design and doesn't make fifteen. Home Depot, however, DOES give partial benefits to part timers.

The people I know who work for or have worked for WalMart speak well of the company. I'm sure you can find some who are disgruntled as you can with any employer. I still say, if you don't like it, give notice, find another job.

Actually, I've avoided going in to Whole Foods up to now. It looks massive, and parking looks dicey. I get some stuff at TJ's, some stuff at Bristol, some stuff at Pav's.

Well the bought out wellsprings which was our local store and talk about a great place to work! Whole Foods seems to have kept everything about the same, I haven't talked to the employees since the change over but they at least seem pretty happy.

I'm a vegetarian but my mother-in-law says their meat is the best in town. However it is the most expensive in town too.
