Guerrillas fired rockets at a US base south of Baghdad on Wednesday, killing 3 US soldiers and wounding 2. An Iraqi civilian was also wounded. A US soldier was killed and another wounded at Diwaniya on Tuesday by a roadside bomb (that is Shiite territory). So the death toll for Monday through Wednesday was fifteen US troops killed. If you're reading these words, you are better informed about US casualties in Iraq than most Americans, for whom it has become a forgotten war. If it is not on television, it does not exist.

What's more interesting than this baleful uptick in US KIA is that the Army assigned responsibility for all these deaths to al-Qaeda yesterday.

Because, it doesn't take much imagination to know, it's politically inexpedient to consider other people have decided to start killing our boys again.

What a waste. SIGH

Larry Mohr

"it's politically inexpedient to consider other people have decided to start killing our boys again."

and I'm whispering here,
"we have to bring these people freedom....and real quietyly now....Jesus."

That is because TV went to another "Drug commercial to make you better and another try to sell you Gold and finally another pharmaceutical commercial and then the economic commercial trying to get your investments".

This is America!

Then American Idol comes on and we only worry about the performance.

This Country is so brainwashed by their own BS a lot of people don't even vote because they don't want to think about it.

Go rent the movie, "Ideocracy" a funny comedy which is happening now.

I have this idea for a pilot program....well, there is this group of people who are all thrown into a real war zone and try to survive. They can do whatever they want to try to survive as long as they stay right there in the zone where there is combat going on. It would be real exciting. First prize could be a new car. Wow!

I think we could tape it in Afghanistan. Yeah. Or Iraq could be cool....that's a joke! REality TV ExTrEmEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! ten young and good looking people....dumped into a war zone.....alone....with weapons....some episodes without weapons....Yeah!!!!

Jeeze what's worse? I thought one of the triumphs of the Surge was that Iraqis were turning on AQ, who manifestly do not have their best interests at heart. If AQ is getting busy, it means that the Iraqis are standing back and letting them do it.

This situation is so unstable it's ridiculous. If McCain is expecting Surge success to sweep him into office he's really going out on a limb.

How many weapons can a sexy woman hide under a Burka?????
I think you'd be real surprised!!!
She's a one woman Army!

Your reality idea is centuries late. I think the original locale was called the Coliseum. Reality theater brought to you by another failed civilization.

I have this idea...put down the blunt, hit the sack, you'll make more sense after a good night of sleep.

As civilizations fail though USN, some folks make $$$ by offering the people what they really want. WAr between Muslims and Americans (Christians though the producers do recognize that not all Americans are Christians and in no way wish to denigrate those people(s) who are not, in fact, Christians (as defined by Pat Buchanan).

The "surge" is bullshit. It was simply a case of extending the tour of duty and pouring some fresh unsuspecting good American unemployed youth into the mix. It has amounted to nothing - all bullshit. Do we know about this?... no we do not know, because we are on a diet of perpetual BS. I feel so sad about the needless tragedy that has been inflicted on so many of our families by this evil, corrupt and immoral Bush regime. More and more of our boys are returning home dead or seriously disfigured... for what???.

On the flip side, it IS nice to live in a country where some people are so oblivious to the world. Some people do not even know where Myanmar is.

A lot of people in my area don't even vote. The Amish do not like to wear the color red because it is the color of bloodshed. Oh yes, most don't have a TV.

War? It is almost taboo to ask about. No one wants to give their stance on it.

The real power in the US is freedom of speech which all of us in this room are familiar with. Sure they can track it, nat it or zero in. But we can tell the nation what we think. LOL!

Obama 2008!

The networks can't cover the war currently because things are going too good.

Don't worry though they are all ready to step back in and give you the bad news as soon as some happens. In fact if they don't get some bad news soon they will do what the New York Times is known for and manufacture it themselves!

Violence is increasing. Must be al Qaida in Iraq.

Every weekday for 5 years The News Hour has shown our fallen soldiers. A daily silent remembrance of the brave and reminder of the folley of the whole thing.

Liberal writers want a constant portrayal of death in Iraq only as a political tool. They ignore the tremendous loss of life here in the United States. According to FBI crime statistic just for the year 2006, there were 14,990 homicides in the United States. Just 1 year! That's over 4 times as many
Americans murdered on American soil as the total number of American soldiers have in combat in Iraq in over 4 years. Bet you won't hear Obama, Clinton or any other liberal politician address this loss of life. They could care less if it does not benefit them politically.

The fact is that America is winning the war in Iraq and even super liberals like Barack Obama won't promise to remove troops immediately. If anything, WHEN the U.S. ultimately prevails, Obama would take the credit if he becomes President.

"The fact is that America is winning the war in Iraq"

It would be interesting UTASTAFF for you to explain what "winning the war in Iraq" means.

The networks can't cover the war currently because things are going too good.

The article's right at the top of the page, you know. If you had read it, you would see it's about the fact that bad things are happening and they're not reporting it. But don't let the facts get in your way.

The main lesson behind the war in Vietnam that folks like Dumbya never learned (mostly because he was a cowardly silver spooner who used his daddy's connection to avoid service) was this...

You cannot win out ultimately against a commited, locally popular insurgency despite having overwhelming military superiority.

The Nazis never really took France.

Israel has never really taken Palestine.

America never really took Vietnam.

You can win the battle of attrition and make sure that more of their guys die than your guys.

You can spray with deadly defolliant or use depleted uranium munition.

You can drop mass tonnage of bombs

You can torture.

You can win every battle.

But you will still lose the war ultimately.

America will never end the violence in Iraq unless America leaves Iraq.

It's just that simple.

That sed, there is one lesson from Vietnam that the Pentagon and BushCo learned loud and clear.

Control the images coming out of the country and control wot average folks see on their teevee screens or public opinion will force you to withdraw your forces.

That one they nailed.

American coverage of the war that's costing 12 Billion a month is pathetic. It's worse than pathetic, it's propaganda. The surge is working? For who? The Iraqi people are dying at a greater rate now than last year and last year was worse than the year before that and so on and so forth.

TeeVee didn't forget the war. The so-called news services on the major networks have been gutted over the years unrtil now they are now merely a shell of their former selves. The 24/7 cable newschannels mostly concern themselves with fluff pieces and filler and progagnda and ads disguised as news and mostly read by very fuckable, albeit not so bright, talking haircuts.

Remember the news channels who were warned by the White House not to run anti-war segments going in? How the lawyers of the corporations of the newschannels told their bosses that it was too dangerous to do so? Wot makes people think that anything has changed?

It hasn't.

Here's a great example.

Prescott Bush, grand-daddy of the BushCo crime family. The guy was dealing with Nazis up to and even after America entered WWII. He was caught and his money was frozen and yet he managed to make the papers of his day cover it up so that it didn't prevent him from seeking public office and getting elected as a US Senator.

Eventually, the money was unfrozen and he got his 1% of the blood money and that's where the BushCo crime families seed capitol came from.

Point to Spud's little story is that the media has pretty much always been in cahoots with the powers that be in an effort to maintain the status quo.

They are just much more sophisticated now than ever before.

Don't believe everything you read and only believe half of wot you see.

Be Well.

UTA,

Bush's war in Iraq is a violation of Christian Ethics and International Law. The displacement of 4 million innocent people, destruction of basic services, murder of a million, torture of thousands, and dusting of spent uranium across the entire country is horrendous and unnecessary. It is a major cause of the destruction of our economy.

But, you are corect, that unececessary loss of American lives pales in comparison to our domestic problems. Industrial accidents take 18,000 workers very year. Murder and auto accidents another 15,000 each, misuse of prescription drugs another 20,000. One could just as easily compare these numbers to the 3,000 who died on 9-11 as the 4,000 who have died in Iraq.

Anybody done a cost benefit analysis for this fake war on terror? One interesting statistic is that
for every insurgent we've killed, we've consumed 16,000 small arms rounds. The there's the $200 grenade launchers which our enemies have used to bring down $60 million helicopters. We are going broke and losing, but Bush just won't admit it. He's an incompetent oaf.

"I want to play with my organ."

What's more interesting than this baleful uptick in US KIA is that the Army assigned responsibility for all these deaths to al-Qaeda yesterday. Isn't that who ALWAYS gets the blame, when they're most likely not responsible again? "Al Qaeda".

Well, facts are the vast majority of our combat deaths have been at the hands of our Shiite and Sunni "friends" - who we're now arming to the teeth. One finger wag from Al Sadr, our Iraqi Shiite "friend", and the ceasefire is off and the war is on ... again.

Al Qaeda/Iraq is a ragtag, fractured, weak disorganization who've never vbeen over a small band of hundreds who are the politically correct (to the GOP) scapegoats for every death in Iraq.

Facts are, the Iraqi Government STILL has not achieved the initial 18 'benchmarks' for which another several hundred U.S. Forces were killed, and another few thousand will be maimed for life. We're we expecting them to use this opportunity to get their act together? We're only at stalemate until they do - and it's bleeding us dry of money, national focus, moral authority, lives and limbs while we patiently wait - for the 5th year and counting.

We won the war. They aren't working for peace. We're supposed to stay and police them forever in that standoff? I'm not for it. It's only hurts us more and more every month, and in way too many ways.

But, we're not really sharing in the pain or the expense. Soldiers and their families make all the human sacrifices, and Communist China lends us the money so we don't have to share the financial burden either. What's going to happen if we need those resources somewhere urgently? Say if Putin and Russia take a stab at something while we're bogged down? We'd be fucked. This isn't good for our national security either. it isn't good for anyone.

TV forgot the war when the news became good and then things stabilized...not too shocking there.

TV and the papers forgot the war when the results started contradicting the disaster they were cheerleading for.

Be Well.

The press is trying to keep the war out of the lime light because baghdad bob mccain wouldn't have a chance if the news continues with all the things going on in Iraq.

Cheney goes to SADi to talk about oil when nothing is said about Iraq.

Iraq will stay out of the picture until the demand gets too high.

Apparently, the demand must not be very high then, Moneywar. Have you let them know your will?

The fact of the matter is we are arming and paying the people who until 6 months ago were killing our troops.

yet we still have this

Petraeus, who is preparing to testify to Congress next month on the Iraq war, said in an interview that "no one" in the U.S. and Iraqi governments "feels that there has been sufficient progress by any means in the area of national reconciliation," or in the provision of basic public services.

yet

Iraq has a budget surplus and America slides from recession towards depression.

follow the money

yeah well... FIVE YEARS!?! Just how long do you think you can keep American minds focussed on one thing? Give the poor bastards a break already, I mean like, five years is, like, ya know, really pushing the limit. It's just sooo boring. Give them something new to bitch about already.

Some people do not even know where Myanmar is.

Posted by Unclesam

Myanmar????? You are delusional! Many people don't even know where Kansas is and certainly can't place either Iraq or Afghanistan on a world map yet have strong feelings and even vote on whether these countries pose a security threat to the US. The level of total ignarance in this country is appaling and incredibly embarassing. Unfortunately many of our citizens, including the men who are actually doing the service, don't know whether the war is going on 100 miles away, 1000 miles away or 10,000 miles away. It's very pathetic.

Bet you won't hear Obama, Clinton or any other liberal politician address this loss of life. They could care less if it does not benefit them politically.

what a fucking idiot. It was your neo-con god Bush who started up this useless war and NEVER, EVER addressed the "loss of life here in the US"

Ryker, you are an unapologetic apologist for an unforgivable war. I can't believe it's just ignorance, but something twisted that prevents you from seeing things as they are.

My friend went to Iraq last year working for Treasury at a top position, basically meeting with the finance ministers to figure out their debt. Previously he had bailed out Uruguay and is one of the top sovereign debt lawyers in the world. He's also a liberal Jewish Democrat New Yorker, and the reason he went to work with an administration he was not naturally aligned with was because he was upset about 9/11, which occurred across the street from his office. He thought Bush was sincere and good things could happen. A year later, totally disabused of that notion, he returned forlorn and hopeless. Just this month, he went back, as part of a top level government investigation to figure out WHAT WENT WRONG. I asked why he would do it again, and he conceded, I don't know. I'm just hoping we can pass something positive on to the next Administration. His bravery and commitment are similar to those of many working and dying there, but this character is not, unfortunately, shared by those at the very top.

The government, quietly, has admitted their fuckup. Now they're looking for somebody to blame. But that doesn't change the fact that this whole thing is a fiasco and we will be fighting the repercussions of it for the next 100 years, or at least until food and water become more important than ideology and power. Which may be less time than that.

TV did not forget the war. Murdoch is cooperating with the administration.

The result of too many media outlets in one hand.

So it's up to US to remedy the media shortcomings with blog and letters to the editor. And let us NEVER forget to stress everywhere we can that this is a Republican war, launched by a Republican corporocracy for oil and to keep Republican mafiosos in office. herm

Nice language. :) In all due respect Geezer1, Bush has addressed this issue by supporting iniatives to surpress gang violence which in cities like Los Angeles accounts for over 50% of the city's homicides.

A Republican congressman in Virginia (Randy Forbes) wrote a tough bill on gangs refered to as the "gangbusters bill" which would toughen sentences for their crimes. Of course, the Dems voted straight down party lines to defeat it. Amazing! Dems supporting groups that kill more Americans each year than all the terrorists and insurgents have in 4 yours.

Just how dumb are we?

"It is almost impossible to talk about the manner in which public ignorance contributes to grave national problems without being labeled an "elitist," one of the most powerful pejoratives that can be applied to anyone aspiring to high office. Instead, our politicians repeatedly assure Americans that they are just "folks," a patronizing term that you will search for in vain in important presidential speeches before 1980."

Reiterating from an above poster, the country is turning into an "Idiocracy."

There are already laws on the books against their crimes. Why should they be punished more than people who aren't in gangs who do the same things? You should understand that logic. Conservatives are against extra punishment for people who attack others because of their race or sexual orientation using the same logic---there are already crimes against assault and murder.
