Cops SHOULD be worried about this. They will have to think twice before stepping across the lines of their duties. I think all cops should wear personal "dash cams", both to protect themselves and anyone who may be mistreated at their hands.

I rate Burbank, CA cops at 100%

Some cops good, some cops bad, some crooks good, some crooks bad.
The real problem is when cops have no fear of being seen as crooks.
Think that Chicago cop who beat up a 5 ft tall woman bartender didnt have a rap sheet of brutality?

Think that Chicago top cops didnt know it?

Think the Chicago cops who beat 4 business men to a pulp at the Jefferson Tap and sent squad cars away from the scene had no prior brutality raps against em?

Think again.

Police departments know exactly who on their force
are brutalizing the citizenry.

When the citizens realize that cops are not held accountable for their crimes they have a right and a duty to bring preasure on the miscreants through what ever means they can.

If the top cops demanded honor and integrity from the boyz on the force, this site would not exist.

I rate Burbank, CA cops at 100%

Chapel Hill cops are pretty decent too. I had one let me slide on a fake ID charge as long as I admitted to the crime. Not to mention the time I got caught up at DUI checkpoint and the cop only gave me a ticket for having an out of date inspection even after I was honest with him about having had a couple beers at the dinner that I had just left.

Good time to say once again: I favor doubling the pay of any cop who demonstrates an understanding that he/she works for me, and not vice versa. How many of us bother to look at the name tag if we encounter one? herm

having worked for cops and having a dad who started a couple of reserve police programs along with neighborhood watch programs, herm - i look at ALL the nametags! of course, i've spent the better part of my life hanging out with them.

Police agencies from coast to coast are furious with a new website on the internet. RateMyCop.com has the names of thousands of officers, and many believe it is putting them in danger

So what do the cops do? They tell the story to a major news organization so that even more people know about the site and more cops are put in danger.

Smart -- real smart

They like to hide. That's why they wear sunglasses. LOL!

This article is kind of sad. The cops in my area are cool. I rarely see them ticketing for speeding or crap like that.

The other day in a blizzard I saw them helping some old guy get into his car.

I always like to see them directing traffic for our children in a school zone. At least they are there and care.

Corrupt politicians are the enemy, not the average cop .

Respect your local police.

In Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding areas we have a wide spectrum of police officers from power-crazed lunatics to reasonable peace officers.
I doubt that the reasonable officers really care if you film them doing their duties, my bet is that it is those, who have something to hide, who will object. Hey, if you have nothing to hide......
Works for the cops too.

I just checked the site and it's down.

Around here we have some real knuckleheads. But what can you expect from a guy with a two digit IQ who has the cover of authority, a badge, a gun, and a fast car.

On the other hand, radar traps are rare and that's welcome relief from St Louis County where there are over 100 municipalities and many that derive a good portion if not all of their revenue from traffic court.

The worst though is the Testa-Lie. I say once a liar always a liar. Catch a cop doing that and every citizen ever arrested or ticketed by that cop should be retried, found innocent, and any fines returned.

There's far too little accountability for all public officials, but these are guys with the guns.

The ones rated not so good on the front page are all from California and Oklahoma. Just an observation.

I'm reading some of the comments about the police encounters.

I had my house raided by the SWAT team. After blowing down my door and scaring my cats out of the house (2 have yet to return) Officer Ehring was the only one who would listen to me and respected my love of cats. He appeared concerned and was willing to help me even though they has no reason to kick in my door.

Officer Charles Wheeler, OK - apparently doesn't have a good relationship with sport bike enthusiasts:

It's like reading some of the DR threads.

Where are you reading this YAV?

Wired has an article that states that GoDaddy shut down the site. If there's a mirror I can't access it.

And I can't follow your links because I keep getting an error page.

Weird, OzarkAggie - I just copied and pasted the links from the address bar.

Just clicked on all my links in the above posts - they all came up.

Here's some on Officer Wheeler:

IS SUCH A PITIFUL OFFICER THAT HE HAS TO POST POSITIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT HIMSELF!!!! He is such a coward that he hides behind his badge and probably has brought this website up to his counselor.

I can't pull it up either.

Well I've tried six ways to link in. GoDaddy says the guy bought a basic site plan, and when the hits started it triggered a reset.

Every bargain isn't a bargain and this guy should have figured he'd need a dedicated server.

It is weird I can't get in.

" SACRAMENTO (CBS13) The next cop you meet might have a stage name Joe Friday, Steve McGarrett, Modesty Blaze, Dirty Harry Callaghan. It will be there official handle to hide their real identity.

Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness says he's giving serious thought to letting cops use fake names in public because he's worried about their security off-duty. He thinks it might be safer for cops to use stage names.

John is worried about web sites revealing personal information about cops. The Sheriff's department would register the fake names and match them up if there's a complaint or problem. Otherwise, the fake names would be the Sheriff's public face. Book'em, Dano."

cbs13.com

Fake names for cops. These guys have guns. What a bunch of pussies.

Of all of the campaign promises that a candidate could make I've only ever thought of one that could get me to register and vote. The first person who promises me a huge pile of burning pigs is the winner, I'll vote for them and no one else, ever.

Ozark, I'm a cop, and I'm not happy about this site. Most people don't know the ins and outs of what we do. I've arrested lots of folks in my career, and none of them have been happy. Should they be able to go online and savage me and my reputation? And how many people are going to go on there and write something nice?

I've pissed off more than my share of highschool Oxycontin addicts by arresting them for thefts and burglaries. Should they be able to complain about me?

I just looked up a buddy of mine at a Sheriff's Department I used to work at. He got a bad rating from some idtiot because back when he was on patrol he was "Really full of himself" and he didn't like security guards. Something that security guards don't understand is that we KNOW that most of them want to be cops but can't pass the hiring process. My buddy is now a really good detective, but I see no positive comments about that.

My biggest concern is that some asshole finds out where I live, and in order to get back at me hurts my wife, or my dog. I never tell people my first name, but this site puts your first and last name and middle innitial out there. It's not too hard to find out through voter registration records with that info. I have guns, and I dare anybody to come after me. But my wife shouldn't be at risk because I do my job.

gunslinger quit being a coward. If you do a good job people won't be pissed off. If you are taking bribes and doing illegal shakedowns you get what you deserve. Your wife needs to know the risks of being married to you. If she can't deal with it then she can get a divorce. I can't see why a woman would marry a cop anyways. You guys don't make jack. I'm related to a cop and I know how much he makes and it isn't much. He can't fight his way out of a wet paper bag either. I let him taze me a few times which was fun. I love how cops will pull out weapons to take down an unarmed man. If an unarmed man steps to me Im choking him out and taking his money.

Ozark, I'm a cop, and I'm not happy about this site. Most people don't know the ins and outs of what we do. I've arrested lots of folks in my career, and none of them have been happy. Should they be able to go online and savage me and my reputation? And how many people are going to go on there and write something nice?

Depends, how many people did you use common sense with and be nice.

I have run across many cops just to ask a question, like directions. Not once have I had a good nice encounter, they have been rude and putout.

Sorry, but they are public servants, nice is what you are suppose to be.

Now I am not so stupid as you catching a thief and expecting the thief to write something nice.

The simple fact that this site is up and thousands are contributing to it suggests that the police have a problem and how they deal with those they are suppose to serve.

I've pissed off more than my share of highschool Oxycontin addicts by arresting them for thefts and burglaries. Should they be able to complain about me?

They can already do that, and ratemycop didn't have personal info, just the name that cops HAVE to give out when they give out speeding tickets, or make an arrest.

Any asshole that wants to find a cop can do so, but it's their funeral, as a good # of them I know always pack a gun. At worst this site encourages lazy assholes to track down police and that IS a problem.

Messiah- If you do a good job people won't be pissed off.

Sorry, not true. A cops job is not popular even when they do it right.

Thanks Alex. The fact is that people hate the cops, because when we show up, usually their life has gone to shit, and we take charge. Also, very often when we show up it means somebody's going to have a bad night! People often resent the fact that we hold so much power of them. We hold the power to take away people's freedom, or even end their lives.

Money, if some cop gave you directions with a smile (which I have done on plenty of occasions) would you even bother to look at his name plate? Whould you log on to write about your positive experience. I doubt it, most people don't. They just think it's part of our job, and you know what, most of us do it just fine. The only thing this website is good for is so that people can bitch. Things like this just deepen the divide between the cops and general public.

And Messiah, Fuck You! I said that I could care less about my safety if some asshole finds out where I live. I have lots of guns, loaded with hollow points. I pack everywhere I go. But my wife doesn't like guns, why should she or my dog be at risk because of my job? A job that most people don't want to do, can't do, or are unfit to do!

And in Washington we don't have to give our full name when we write somebody a ticket. Just first innitial, and last name.

He got a bad rating from some idtiot because back when he was on patrol he was "Really full of himself" and he didn't like security guards. Something that security guards don't understand is that we KNOW that most of them want to be cops but can't pass the hiring process.

So because dude can't pass a test to be a real cop, you have permission to be a dick to him because he's a rent-a-cop?

It's time you faced the cold, hard truth.

A lot of police officers are jack asses. Idiots with guns. I'm not looking for someone to give me their thoughts on Nietzsche, but I am looking for a bit more brain activity than a fetus.

I was pulled over by one who wrote me a $400 ticket for having two tow-hitch-balls on my bumper. No law or ordinance against it, wrote me a ticket anyway.

Every cop might not be a dick, but there's so many dicks that are cops it just looks that way.

Also, very often when we show up it means somebody's going to have a bad night! People often resent the fact that we hold so much power of them. We hold the power to take away people's freedom, or even end their lives.

You don't have the power to take away anyone's freedom. You have the power to make arrests based on evidence. A judge or a jury takes away freedom after said evidence has been presented in a court.

You are not judge, jury and executioner.

And just remember. What little "power" you wield is limited by the people who grant it to you. You know, the people you serve?

I had a cop write me a ticket for rolling through a blacked out traffic signal after a hurricane. No one else was even close to being in the intersection, but he had set up a trap.

He told me it was just like a four way stop. He had only one problem. The law doesn't say that.

I had to go to court four times before I got a chance to go before a judge. The judge was pissed that the DA had not handled this one. She had been sentencing violent felons all day and wasn't in the mood for a minor traffic case.

The DA reduced the charge to a non-moving violation which would give me no points on my license and we settled it.

All because of a cop "doing his job" and making up the law as he went along.

Police agencies from coast to coast are furious with a new website on the internet.

Yeah why shouldn't they be furious, most of them beleive they are above the law and common decency.

After conducting a five year investigation into several "leaders" of a local police organization I have seen about it all, assault on fellow officers, bribery, corruption, hookers, extra marital affairs, using Police Benevolent funds to pay for hookers and hotel rooms for girl friends, stealing from events to raise money for charities, you name it.

And lookie lookie they all still have their jobs.

"You don't have the power to take away anyone's freedom."

Wrong. When your ass gets thrown in the back seat of a cruiser, you've just had your rights removed. May be for a short time, but removed none-the-less.

"What little "power" you wield is limited by the people who grant it to you."

No one is arguing that. But make no mistake, you're on the lower rung of the food chain when the lights on are behind you.

Silver,

I know that in my state if a traffic signal is black (out) then you treat it as a four way stop.

I also know this is the case in Texas too.

Granted if there was no one else coming to the intersection then the cop was just being a jerk.

I have met 1, count them 1, cop that was actually sane. The rest appear to be grown up hall monitors with nothing else to do than bust me for speeding. You guys want to bitch about tax dollars being spent in Iraq, I say tax dollars are wasted on HiPo sitting in ditches or around curves waiting for me to go by at 6 over the limit.

Fucking HiPo, get a life, find some rapists or murderers or something. Better yet, convert HiPo to Border Patrol and deport some illegals. Do something useful.

Cheers,
Walt

My biggest concern is that some asshole finds out where I live, and in order to get back at me hurts my wife, or my dog.

Your name is public record, and on the paperwork of anyone you arrest or ticket, moron.

These pigs are just scared they might actually have to start obeying the law themselves.

Well I have had good and bad cops.

Not trying to be sexist or anything but none of my good experiances are with chick cops. Seems like they are trying to overcompensate or something. Worst was the one who followed me for 1 mile finaly cut the lights on pulled me over and spent 30 min pulling all my information trying to get me for something and all she could end up with is I had moved 36 days ago and not changed my address on my license.

Compare to the one who pulled me for an out taillight, Heck I didn't know it was out told him he said no problem get it fixed.

Or the day that I got pulled 2 times in one day for expired inspection. First was a chick cop who kept me tied up for 20 min because of it. Then on the way home I get pulled again this time I just tell the male cop sorry I already got a ticket this morning and it will be fixed tomorrow but I had a big meeting and could not get it done yet. He smiles nods and says do that, gets back in the cruiser and life goes on.

I used to hang out with a couple of cops and they were pretty cool guys, most of the small dick fast car big gun cops you guys are bitching about they bitched about too. Go figgure there are good people who are cops and bad people who are cops just like anything else in life.

Cops are arrogant asses who hide behind the badge. I have only met one cop that I wouldn't punch in the face. The rest I wouldn't punch only because I don't want to go to jail for doing what ought to be done. Cops are the same fuckers that show up when you don't want them and are never there when they are needed.

No cop ever stopped a robbery of my car or house, but plenty of cops have shown up to tell me to turn down my stereo or to slow down.

Motorcycle cops are the worst, what do they do, they hide under bridges and wait for you to speed by so they can ticket you with glee. Or they drive cars with absolutely no markings and sneak around hoping to snatch a few of your dollars. Swine. All of them.

No cop has ever done anything to help me.

I was on my motorcycle one day, in my neighborhood. I was working on the bike, so I was doing some riding around tweaking it. Not speeding. I pulled out on to the main road where I could ride at 45, circled back around after a few hundred yards, and got pulled over.

Cop gets out, pulls his gun on me. Calls for back up. Another cop arrives, and while I'm bent over the cop car I said to him "What the hell is this? This guy doesn't like motorcycles? I live RIGHT THERE and pointed to my house." He said "Relax, you're fine - don't worry about him."

Easy for him to say. Until he arrived I had no idea how it was going to turn out. Talk about adrenaline. No ticket, nothing. Still don't know what it was all about.

"Ozark, I'm a cop, and I'm not happy about this site. Most people don't know the ins and outs of what we do."

When I read the article, my first thought was: "Gawd I love the internet."

Too bad that you are not happy about this site. Suck it up. Too many officers forget who they work for. Too many officers abuse their authority. Too many officers think that they are above the law.

As much as I respect law enforcement, officers are accountable to the People, not the other way around.

So let sites as this serve notice to law enforcement that there is now an expedient method to rate their performance, rated by the very people for whom they work. Let it then be instituted an investigative board to read these reports, determine their validity, and act accordingly. Not only will sites such as this assist in weeding out officers who abuse their positions, but will also serve to highlight the actions of officers who deserve praise.

I love it when half wits say things like "Well if there aren't any cops what are you going to do when someone breaks in your house and tries to kill you and your whole family?"

The answer is simple:

I'll either kill the fucker or die trying. Meanwhile a little bitch in a cute blue hat will be across town keeping us all safe by writing some poor bastard who is doing everything he can to get to work in the heap of a vehicle that he can afford a ticket for not having his seat belt on or for tossing a cigarette butt out the window.

To use a favorite line of the republicans during their rabid defense of the Spy on our Citizenry Act (aka Patriot Act);

"If you did nothing wrong, then you have nothing to hide"

Cops should be held up to this kind of scrutiny. Don't like it, tough titties....Get a job making the donuts instead of eating them.

Police...all about supporting personal freedoms until those freedoms enable citizens to shine a light (both good and bad) on certain officers deeds, then it's a 'security issue'.

I just looked up a buddy of mine at a Sheriff's Department I used to work at. He got a bad rating from some idtiot because back when he was on patrol he was "Really full of himself" and he didn't like security guards. "We hold the power to take away people's freedom, or even end their lives."

Which is exactly why you should be held to the highest standards and placed under the brightest spotlight for ANY indiscretion or irregularity.

"Things like this just deepen the divide between the cops and general public."

Sorry, but this is just a drop in the bucket. There are WAY too many stories in the media of cops who acted very inappropriately but were, surprise surprise, absolved of any wrong doing by the "official" inquiry. Cops watch out for cops, you know it, I know it, and THAT is what deepens the divide.

Cops Plant Drugs

Now how many years in prison should the cops who did this serve?

Well there's only ONE cop on administrative leave WITH PAY at the time this video was made.

Howard County Maryland Police painted all patrol cars BLACK! And it says on the side of the car, "To serve and protect"

"Will they be able to access our home addresses, home phone numbers, marital status, whether or not we have children? That's always a big concern for us,"

Well, cops routinely hand over citizen's names and addresses to the newspapers, just because they were arrested, with no regard to innocence or guilt. Only to see those names and addresses appear in the next day's police blotter report. So, fuck 'em if they don't want their names known to the public.

I've only ever had to deal with American cops in relation to traffic crap. I've never met one that I could muster up the slightest bit of respect for. Most are exactly as Walt describes ^. Sorry.

The most laughable was in Washingtonville, NY. 2am, on my way home from late shift, middle of nowhere, no other cars anywhere. I made a right turn without signaling, because it was obvious that there was NOBODY TO SIGNAL TO. Well, two assholes with badges were hiding somewhere. Pulled me over, lights and siren at 2am. One stood a number of yards away, with his fucking gun drawn, the other loser blinded me with his macho mag light and proceded to read me the riot act for not using my fucking turn signal. Inspected my car to try to find any tiny thing they could ticket me for. I said nothing, I'm not stupid, got the ticket. Paid it. And never forgot the donut-munching rube losers.

But, pretty much every experience I've ever had with AMERICAN cops was along those lines.

German caops are professionals. So professional in fact, that in 13 years of living here, I've never spoken to or been hassled by a one of them.

/rant

Personally, I feel we have about 10x too many cops in this country and this is the reason that so many people have bad experiences with them. I would estimate 7 out of 10 cops are in 'revenue generating' roles giving speeding tickets and busted kids for underage drinking (huge revenue generator in Wisconsin). About 1 out of 10 cops is an actual detective trying to solve crimes (which people actually want them to do) but because there are so few of them working on this, they focus only on violent crimes so property crimes go completely uninvestigated/unpunished - which is why people say cops don't do anything for them. The remaining 2 cops are useless overhead. I will never vote for any bill that is for hiring more cops unless they guarantee that they will be used for solving crime and not traffic or other revenue generating activities. I also agree with the comment that most cops are dicks - go to a foreign country and ask a cop for directions (Taiwan, Japan, UK, Europe) and they will be very friendly and helpful. In the US they just act like dicks.

This does not endanger the individual Police Office ANYMORE than them having MY personal data to chare with each other.

WAY too many cops - if you need an example of that look at the story about the Mom at the shopping mall in Illinois!

Police in general do not respect your rights - just look at an episode of cops to verify that - and THAT is what you see on screen, what they already cleaned up for TV.

Why should I be concerned for their privacy? They do not protect my personal info. Why should they get why they are not willing to give?

This is not lllegal activity and should not be! Lets start rating the cops cause they generally give out piss poor performance. And city hall could apparently care less.

And IF an officer is giving good service we need to know so city hall can't rail road them out of a job!!

This will have the pontential to protect good officers in the long run and weed out the bad eggs. This is a great idea!!

Short of new material today, I must reiterate:

1. Double the pay of any cop who demonstrates a clear understanding that he/she works for me and not vice versa. An adequate number of hits on a cop-o-meter would do that.

2. It was in Berkeley a half century ago when a cop came up to my car window as I left a tavern at 2 a.m. and asked "sir, have you been drinking?" It was hard to deny. "Well," he said, "you just follow me home." He led me through the winding streets of the Berkeley hills at 20 miles per hour and nothing more was ever said. That kind of policing is also hard to forget. herm

CBS did a investigation thru southern california where they walked into CHP departments and asked for a complaint form. Now the official policy is supposed to be no questions asked.

Out of like 50 stations only some 12 or 14 complied to the letter. All the rest would either grill the complainer, discourage them, ask to show proof of ID, threaten arrest, or just flat out kick them out of the building.

Sadly in my own town, our local department threatend arrest on the reporter for asking for a complaint form. All on camera....

That site really hasn't created anything new in terms of tracking down police officers. Its not like that site pillaged the national database of law enforcers. Whether you like it or not, you put not only yourself at risk, but your family when you took the job. Its not right, but thats reality and this website doesn't change that.

And my ACLU is pushing civilian police review boards, not a stance to endear one to the boys in blue. But if cops once are accountable to their civilian bosses, we have the genesis of reform. herm

Should they be able to go online and savage me and my reputation? And how many people are going to go on there and write something nice?

Yes, they should, and if you're a good cop I know some people will write an honest good review. Remember, you work for me, not the other way around. I, and everyone else, has the right to state our opinion publicly on our experiences with you. Deal with it.

I have guns, and I dare anybody to come after me.

Is that a threat? From a cop? Lol! What a surprise! Gee, I wonder what type of rating you can expect?

I now rate Burbank, California cops 110%

Well you can't rate anyone now. Follow the link and you get an empty cookie cutter site about doll houses.

LOL

GoDaddy is my registrar but I won't host a site with them. I'll bet he bought a package deal with a "free" domain and now he's screwed.

I still think the site is a good idea. A public service for "public servants." Can we get one for bureaucrats?

Actually I think he is trying to set up his own server now.

If you do an online DNS lookup on ratemycop.com you get the IP address: 205.234.222.18

The dollhouse site returns an IP addy of: 72.167.159.53

If I go to the first IP addy I get an Apache server page saying they set up the server properly.

Trying to enter the domain name of ratemycop.com is taking me to the same dollhouse site, and a DNS lookup through my ISP returns the dollhouse site's IP addy. However a friend of mine in Europe says that when they go to ratemycop.com they get the Apache server page. So, it seems there is some DNS issues right now. Whether it is just taking time for the change to filter through to the other DNS servers, or the site is actively being blocked in the US by not updating the DNS information remains to be seen.

Either way, the site is down right now as the site isn't active on the proper IP address yet.

If the IP addresses are still reporting incorrectly by tomorrow afternoon I may contact the CNN office in town.

I have no idea why you guys are having problems accessing the site. I checked again last night and just now. Everything's there and ratings have been continuing to change.

Using the ip address MooManFL listed (same one I get when I ping "ratemycop.com") I get the same message re: Apache. If I type in "ratemycop.com" in my browser I get the site.

Perhaps your ISP's are blocking the actual site?
