Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Monday, March 10, 2008

While hundreds of Mexican soldiers are deserting the army to join drug trafficking gangs, California is facing the opposite problem: A growing number of gang members here have infiltrated the U.S. Armed Forces in order to receive military training. The numbers speak for themselves: In 2003 there were just 16 incidents of gang members in the U.S. Armed Forces, while in 2006 the total was 10,309, according to the study, "Gang-Related Activity in the U.S. Armed Forces Increasing," released in 2007 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Twenty-two official entities, including the Los Angeles Police Department, participated in the report.

EARLY 1800 COWBOY GANGS HAD FORMER SOILDERS...EARLY 1900 ITLAIAN AND IRISH GANGS HAD FORMER SOILDERS.....NOTHING NEW....MOVE ALONG NOW

Eees not a gang mon, eees a club!

Gang is a poorly defined term for poor folks with some sort of support structure. Gangs and armed forces have much more in common than not, especially those legendary Few Good Men. It's mostly a matter of whose orders you obey - and to do what. Law enforcement uses the term far too often to try to limit the freedom of association of people they feel threatened by. herm

Judas, I think you are missing the point. In your historic examples, the gang members are, as you say, "former soldiers." What's being described in the article isn't exactly the same thing. These aren't old discharged soldiers who have turned to crime after their service; they are young, active gang members who are turning to the military for additional training.

"It's an open secret that the ringleaders of local gangs are encouraging their younger members to enter the Army and receive military training and later to train the rest of the group," claims the former DEA advisor.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but. Isn't the old saying:

"Know your enemy."

Not

"Train your enemy."

Gang members are good material for the military.

They willing to kill people, understand a hierarchy, cunning and devious and obey orders.

Trick is to get them sign up for 10 years, move them to opposite side of country, get them out of the culture they are in.

Funny thing is you will probably find you have first class soldiers if you keep them out of old environment.

Which do you want in heat of battle someone who never fired a gun at a human before or someone who did this on saturday night.

Fuck you Judas, I'll move along when I damn well please.

Anyway, I think the concern is that people actively involved in a criminal enterprise aren't really the ideal candidates to represent your country overseas, esp. while armed. Also, the phenomena of gang members joining up specifically for weapons and tactical training is new, and not the same as ex-soldiers joining gangs in the 1800s. Also, until recently, joining the military would isolate you from your old neighborhood and gang. Now, they can still coordinate via email and cell phones from anywhere in the world.

Juicy...GOOD POINT...i served with active gang members of the crips... bloods....neo nazi.. and MS13....they are loyal to the service and do not fight each other while under contract....you might have a few rouge members but the majority cause no problem at all

our military has strict code and guide line that are enforced on a daily basis...their presence is a silent one

Odie has a point... IF you can get them to leave the GANG life behind you will probably end up with a good soldier.

But, there should be a zero tolerance for gang activity. Penalties for evidence of involvement with gangs while in the military should be higher than for drug use.

No gang tattoos either.

But, don't hold your breath. That would make sense.

Well, if any of y'all have met a genuine Crip, then you understand it is a mere matter of time before one of them uses their miltary training to take out a police patrol or a police station.

The upside to something like that? Certain rednecks may actually come to appreciate how bad Iraq actually has been.

If it improves their accuracy and cuts down on "collateral damage", I'm all for it.

These kids spraying anything in sight scare the shit out of me.

they are loyal to the service and do not fight each other while under contract....you might have a few rouge members but the majority cause no problem at all

I totally agree...I mean we're bringing them in and they've only multiplied gang incidents by 645. Absolutely nothing to see here...

But then you know who is likely to have done it.

Remember an 18 year kid in a gang is a lot diff from a 28 year old vet with 10 years service who earned the respect of his peers and superiors by being part of a unit.

McVeigh was ex military so idea that its just ex gang is hokum.

COME ON GUYS....do you even have a clue on how the military in-processing works...if you did....you would know that the military does complete back ground checks...tatoos are always looked at and noted....you are stripped down naked and looked at from head to toe

the gang members that you are talking about have no gang tattoos.....have a good enough back ground...to where they are processed further

they say there are over 30,000 gang mambers in our armed forces....spread across 4 services....645 incidents out of 30,000 is not a problem

it does not matter if these gang member joined the military before or after they joined a gang

it is impossible to stop gang members who have a clean record and show no ties to being in a gang

if you have better ideas on how to stop gang members from getting in i would like to hear them....but so far our DOD is going a good job right now

THIS IS A NON STORY

"you might have a few rouge members "

Those are the chicks, right?

I can see MS13 or some other hispanic gang getting "training" (not really, but it's plausible), but Crips and bloods? Give me a fucking break. I'll bet that blacks represent less than 1% of the infantry.

For some reason the blacks don't be diggin 11B.

Only the Army is to blame for this one. They have lowered the enlistment standards to the point where they even take people with nasty police records.

Can you imagine the cool home invasion robberies we'll be seeing in the future. Just clearing the neighborhood.

645 incidents out of 30,000 is not a problem

Not 645... 645 X 16... which is over 10,300.

Guess what happens when these guys come home "properly trained"?

I haven't paid attention, but are you telling me the Army has lower standards now than the Navy...Please no! Nooooooo!

Many a young lad gone astray has been offered military service in lieu of prison. With a far better prognosis I'm sure.

BUILD more PRISONS!!!!!!!!!

Well,

I'm all in favor of more accurate drive-by shooting! Fewer innocent casualties.

AlGore would not approve of suppression of gang culture, though, so you'd better allow the tattoos.

"Many a young lad gone astray has been offered military service in lieu of prison. With a far better prognosis I'm sure."

Do you slam the brave young lads who will gladly lay down their lives for MY free speech? The thing is ... when His Honor lets the spray-painter chose between four years in The Slam and four years in dress blues, who's around to advise the kid on the healthier alternative?

And if you "BUILD more PRISONS!!!!!!!!!" they will certainly come.

I think Jon throws in Al Gore only for Republican correctness. herm

Aren't you the guy who tried to enlist but got rejected because you were too stupid to fill out a simple form correctly?

You already got bludgeoned with this stupid shit when you were posting as Justsomejiz. You sure you want to go back to this?

When do you start typing MEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPS?

We're sending the Bloods and the Crips over to Iraq so we can fight them over there instead of over here.

"We're sending the Bloods and the Crips over to Iraq so we can fight them over there instead of over here."

But when we finally do pull out - in a hundred years? - will they follow us home? herm
