Mr. Wright's and his successor's repeated enthusiastic promotion of their famous parishioner may be running afoul of federal tax law, which says churches can endanger their tax-exempt status by endorsing or opposing candidates for public office.

I have always said that the rules are clear when it comes to a church's exemption status. I have called out people like Fallwell and Robertson, and Pastor Wright is no different. The pulpit is for preaching and should not be used as a political soap box.

i believe all churches not attending to widows and orphans, missionaries and ALL things charitable SHOULD have their tax exempt status stripped from them - that's exactly why the world is in the dilemma its in today - the church has FORGOTTEN its job to be the source of charity rather than the referral to all things the government offers.

we've stopped going to A church and now give to only those charities we deem charitable.

God help the church.

p.s. - does anybody else ever get tired of wright's militant "po black man" shpiel?

way to keep the brother down!

nanc in this i agree with you

see we can get along

oy.

This is a matter of no great moment for the church. With Oprah as a long-time active member (and aslo an active supporter and promoter of Mr. Obama, she could fund the church's operation forever with what for her would be "chump change."

What's ironic concerning the whole thing is that the U.S. government itself has been actively albeit indirectly supporting candidates' election. Mr. Obama's early employment as a community agitator promoted political activism and voter registration and participation in a population that overwhelmingly favors the Democrat Party candidate.

The government intervenes to deprive church's of tax-exempt status, when it itself engages in the prohibited activity of de facto promotion of candidates. And the government has for a long-time looked the other way, when these violations occurred, particularly among poverty projects that it funded associated with church's. Ho hum. Much ado about nothing.

Do "The Sturmers" and other such white hate groups enjoy tax-exempt status because they clothe themselves in the garb of "a church," where they promote racial antagonism and hatred? What about the "Nation of Islam?" does it enjoy tax-exempt status? What about the Islamic maddrassas in the U.S. that preach religious hatred?

... associated with "churches."

Wow!

The shpiel is indeed destructve in my opinion.

Holy $@%&. I agree with NANC. I feel so dirty.

Think about it. In Islamic countries there is no separation of church and state. These exhortations are the way of life. The Koran informs the state, and governs its operation.

Johnson, Fred Phelps' church is tax exempt, would you like that revoked?

What about when Pat Robertson prays for the death of a Supreme Court Justice; should his church's exemption status be revoked?

there are only like 2 or 3 "islamic" countries

saudi arabia, iran, and i don't know maybe syria??

and the dictators of each countries interpret the koran as to best apply their own will on their states operations.

pakistan, indonesia, turkey, malaysia and the big muslim population countries have a seperation of church and state.

there should be a seperation of church and state
there should also now with what we have learned since the industrial age is a seperation of corporation and state.

As well as a free media as a 3rd party observer and check.

Pat Robertson's ability to suck air should be revoked.
