Never heard of them before. Another radical Islamic group to try and figure out.

Uighurs are the Muslim community in China. Some were invited by the then military ruler of Pakistan, Zia-ul-haq to come to Pakistan to fight soviets along with other islamists in 1980s. During the reign of the Taliban, Al-Qaida managed to regroup them along with the Chechens, Arabs and Uzbeks. They were secretly sent to china for terrorists attacks. This is how they appeared in china. Overall the Uighurs are not terrorists and they are Sunni, it is a small bunch of Sunni turned Wahabi by the Arab sheiks money in the 90s who are committing these terrorist attacks. Some of these Uighurs also live in Uromchi and they are peaceful.

Terrorists have one thing in common, not much military might, but their fight is about land.

I am muchly s'prised you guys have not heard of the Uighers.

Most folk in China are "Han" Chinese. But they also have many many other kinds of Chinese people. They speak their own version Chinese or a mix of Turkish and Chinese.

For example, the Uighers write their language in Arabic script (meaning I can read it... but damn if I know what it might mean).

Anyway, as you know, some people... like the Tibet people... have issues with China. The Uighers have similar issues. With the addition that they are muslim of faith and some of them weren't sure if they belonged with the Han-Chinese.

The actual problem is their isolation. They live on the other side of the Taklamakan Desert. Very very poor soil in which nothing will grow so they themselves have no economic opportunity.

But all that has changed and China has been pumping money and resources into the area so it grows as much as China's east coast area has.

As far as I know, most Uighers are now much pacified and see themselves as proud Chinese.

My interest with these folks is that they practice a form of super kung-fu.

As you know, Kung-fu and martial arts in general are Buddhist dominated in Asia. THIS martial art is Muslim dominated (called "Islamic Boxing" in China). Which means, they won't hold back their punches.. in theory.

Malay martial arts and Filipino martial arts (some if them) and Indonesian martial arts are also Muslim dominated and it shows in their being more effective.

I think they are a facinating people.

I can take a bus to China across the Himalayas and spend a day or two there in Kashgar (nearest city to Pakistan) where they can understand my language.

China has since many years, started mixing the populations about. Now there are just as many normal Chinese (Han Chinese) in Uigher and othee ethnic areas as their are these guys.

As far as I know, as China's wealth increases. more and more of their ethnic minorities are forgetting what troubled them in the first place. They are all proud to be Chinese.

They are basically dead. We killed Al-Qaeda. If it were still any good, they would've done something spectacular by now... maybe not in USA, but they could've certainly made some impressive move inside Pakistan by now.

If you look up the "Karakoram Highway"... it is the highest and most difficult highway in the world, cutting across the Himalayas, linking Pakistan and China.

It took many people from both sides to make this road.

So our guy sneaked in a Koran to the Chinese workers.

Few days later, they were all arrested (the Chinese muslims) and shot. Just for having a Koran.

Agreed. Good advice when talking to any group really. The literal content of our words is only half of wot we communicate when we speak. Your voice, it's tone, it's volume, the emotions evinced, sincerity level versus obvious sarcasm, attention paid, allowing others to finish their sentences, speaking overly long or being curt and impatient, the relationship between speaker and speakee, body language and so much more goes into the act of communicating.

Some people are far more concious of this than others. Some people are downright oblivious to nuance.

This is wot makes blogworld so tough at times. We are forced to rely on literal content so much here. There is a kind of purity to that but there is also a kind of diminishment as well.

Spud watched a very interesting documentary tonight on The Passionate Eye (Spud's big on Docs ...and eyes too come to think on it) Anyways, the topic du jour was the sexual revolution in China. The rise in prostitution which although technically still a crime punishable by death has become a neccessary evil in the eyes of the government due to the lopsided men to women ratio. The rise in AIDS, of course. The rise in strip clubs. The rise in the sale of street corner porn. The fact that women are now more valued than ever in a societal sense because of the classical laws of supply and demand. The documentarians went undecover inside a brothel and covered a Chinese Sex Toy and Fashion Exhibition. The first year they tried it the governemnt shut them down, last year it had over 30,000 attendees. They brought up the fact that sexual revolution is a genie that is well nigh impossible to stuff back into the bottle once it has been opened. Mostly, Spud came away from the Doc with the sense that it's never been more FUN to live in China than it is right now. It's kinda like the sexual revolution of the sixties here in the west only without all the attendent religious guilt that went along with it.

I'm gonna have to check this stuff out. I've always liked the more realistic forms of martial arts, as compared to the "artsier" forms like Capoiera.

One of my favorites is Krav Maga, the Israeli form of martial arts. It holds no foolish reservations about rules or honor, and even emphasizes hitting/stabbing guys in the junk when possible. That's probably why they have survived for so long surrounded by people who want them dead...

I'm sure Hillary had a role is stopping this. After all, she's a fighter!

Come to think of it... there is something else to it. China is pronounced here as "Cheen". But since now everything we buy is "made in China", (from my car to my watch) the word "Cheen" has been replaced by "China" in normal speech.

I would think that 9-11 has more to do with Sayeed Qutb than this guy Wahab. Wahab seems more like a derogatory term made up by some other Muslims-- after all, Wahab abhored grave worship, and many Muslims (Hanafi, Sufi) still do it to this day, and coincidentally, they have only bad things to say about this guy. And the term doesn't really explain the extensive influence the modern Qutb had on Bin Laden and the like.

It is interesting that even liberal American born converts to Islam such as Hamza Yusuf who are close to the Sufi movement openly denounce other Muslims in vitriolic rhetorical terms and utilize this term. Does any "Wahabi" actually call himself as such?

Because Sayeed Qutb is a modernist and his political views on Islam are much clearer and better accessed by those average Muslims outside the Madrassa, his writings seem to represent the beliefs of Al-Qaeda than a guy who died 250 years ago.

Perhaps we should refer to them as "Qutbists".

Though I have been interested in this sort of thing since 9-11, and have read quite a bit about the subject, I am by no means well-educated on the subject, and of course being Christian, an outsider. However, it occurs to me that many Hanafi dislike Wahab and the modern day hot-shot scholars who follow him like BinBaz and Albani (sp?) because they rip on the Hanafi for celebrating Mohamed's birthday and venerating saints and so forth. He-he. Just like the catholics! LOL!

Still, it is interesting to note that many adherents to the "wahab" way of Islam have come out and publically denounced terrorism. 'Abdul 'Aziz ibn 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah al-Baz was born in Riyadh in 1910 (Dhul Hijjah 12, 1330) into a family of Islamic scholars. His father died when he was eight years old. Sheik Bin Baz was able to recite the entire Qur'an when he was eleven years old, and lost his sight when he was sixteen.

He studied under Shaikh Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab. In addition to the memorization of the Qur'an, he memorized all of the major hadith and many other important texts. His first position was as a judge in Kharj from 1936-1950. He taught at the Religious Institute of Riyadh and then at the faculty of Shariah. He became the Deputy Rector at the Islamic University of Madinah in 1950. He was promoted to Rector in 1970. A royal decree was issued which appointed him President of the Administration of Religious Research, Ifta, Da'wah, and Guidance at the rank of a minister. Sheikh Ibn Baz was appointed Grand Mufti by King Fahd in 1994.

Ibn Baz was a supporter of many Islamic causes. He called upon Muslims to support their brethren in Palestine, Bosnia, Kosovo and Kashmir and won the King Faisal prize for Service to Islam.

You know I have fished the Tigris and the Euphrates? Caught fish in both rivers using Rooster tails.

I am a Bass man myself.

I usually use an Adams or Royal Coachman when dry fly fishing.

Bead headed Prince Nymph with a blood worm dropper when scratching the bottom.

Rainbow, Brown and Cut throat Trout mainly. Sometimes I'll get ahold of a white fish.

Never been Bass fishing but have heard many stories. My father and I have concidered buying a Bass boat and taking it up. At 63 he is having a harder and harder time wading the rivers.

I do not recommend Bass fishing. As with trout, there are many variables, but with Bass, there are many more to consider. Both have similarities with color choice, line size, depth of presentation, high/low pressure accommodations, etc.. But with Trout, you know they have to swim past a particular point. Bass on the other hand can be at any depth on any size lake at any given time. Feeding or not feeding. Spawning or not. Frontal activity can wreak havoc on a days fishing for Bass. You have to account for the bloody cloud cover and ripple on the water and temperature. Both are sciences, but GD, you can fish your ass off for a Bass and come back with a Crappy, while I have never came back from a hunt for Trout empty handed.

My father and I have concidered buying a Bass boat and taking it up.

Here in Utah. Some really nice streams and rivers to choose from. Many, many lakes as well. Tons with Bass and trout.

...while I have never came back from a hunt for Trout empty handed.

I have. Same kind of variables. They are either feeding or not feeding or not eating what you have on the line. Takes patience and note keeping to 'figure out' a stream. Fishing after a full moon is almost certin skunkville. As with most types of hunting/fishing, patience is a virtue.




P.S. Don't tell Salad Tosser what his handle means it will spoil all the fun in calling him that.
