More people say they are Democrats than said so before voting started in this year's presidential contests while the number of Republicans has remained flat, a survey showed Thursday. The Associated Press-Ipsos poll had additional bad news for the GOP: The number of independents and moderates satisfied with President Bush and the country's direction has dipped to record or near-record lows.

The poll showed 52 percent call themselves Democrats, up from 45 percent in an AP-Ipsos survey in mid-December. Thirty-five percent say they are Republicans, about the same as December's 37 percent.

But will they vote in November?

People will say anything for a Klondike Bar.

I am a registered Democrat. when was the last time I VOTED for one...I couldn't begin to guess.

Wife,
Yes, but do you call yourself one?

I suspect that the Democrats are intending to vote this November going by the numbers voting in the primaries. I think that many Dems were fooled by right wing talk radio and TV but that they have begun to realize that those liars have led them to disaster. The falling home values have woken up many people who otherwise are apathetic but when it comes to their own security....then they pay attention.

Based on your comment here's a serious question: What does that tell you? That Dems are more superficial? They talk one way, but when it comes to trudging to the polls they would rather watch Oprah?

I don't know the answer. Maybe Reps take their civic duty/right to vote more seriously.

Posted by OohRah

I don't think "superficial" is right, but clearly less reliable voters. And then of course there are people like a recnt poster, who are registered democrats but don't vote for them. That always cracks me up. Maybe superficial is correct, after all.

That's why I have no faith in the two-party system, and have only registered in a party out of necessity : here in NY the primaries aren't open, and on the key issues (for me), the dems better represent my views than the repubs.

Does Hilary Clinton consider herself a Democrat?

Dani I have said it once I have said it Twice I have said it thrice. Hellary is a Righty. She is a Republican. Go look at Her early years and You wil see the TRUTH.

Larry Mohr

LARRY I must admit I was a bit naive about her. I really was fooled. My eyes are finally open though.

A lot of Dems don't vote because they're too busy not-working collecting welfare, drinking wine, and smoking crack.

I'm in the same boat as Danni on this. I was for Hillary's campaign, though the Iraq vote really pissed me off. Then, the more I saw of the campaign the more I moved toward Obama. At this point, I'm pretty sure that voting for her would require me to go to the polls with a couple of airline puke bags in hand.

The label on Hillary is really irrelevant. The question will have to be if she's the best a moderate American majority can hope for. We're shellshocked - numbed, if you will - in the eighth year of Bush and not ready to accept the idea that we CAN do better - if corporate hit squads don't blow the good guys away.

But Hillary? A wimpy centrist who sold out as first lady, who embodies the corporate boardrooms' best hope for retaining control. I have a feeling that Wall Street won 't invest much in McBush. herm

Before the debates started, I said here that as a traditional insurgent leftist myself, someone who voted for George McGovern and caucused for Jesse Jackson, supported Hart, Bradley, Tsongas, that even though both Clinton and Obama were running on the promise to implement McGovern's policies after all these years, that I would love to see a black guy named Barack H. Obama in the WH, just for what it might do for America's image around the world.

Then we had the first debate, and the best debater and the most Presidential person on the stage was none of the men, but surprisingly enough, it was Hillary Clinton.

I was still mulling this over the next day, the black candidate of the new politics of hope vs. the first woman President, when Obama's camp started the first negative attacks of the campaign, calling her "Bush-Lite", "untrustworthy", and "untruthful".

On the same day on the Ol' DR, TR took that as a signal, and started in on her as a "NeoCon and a "corporate whore".

Well, the rest is history.

Bullshit corky. there is way more to your position than that.

way more.

Really, elucidate my position for me.

And remind me, which of the Eberly Bros you are again?

Corky,
Sooooo, you have chosen to blindly support her as a dig to TR? Please tell me you have at least a little more depth of character than that. Tell me this isn't about sisterhood and how it's now time for the ladies to run things, regardless.

Really, elucidate my position for me.

No point to that. We all know what it is.

which is fine with me. I don't care.

My point is that you didn't come to you position after watching one debate.

outta here.

Hillary Clinton and Wal-Mart: A Love Story
by Jonathan Tasini

....For those not in the know, Clinton served on Wal-Mart's board for six years prior to her husband's run for the presidency....

In 1992, Wal-Mart was simply smaller than it is today. But it was still huge, with $43.9 billion in net sales, 1,714 stores and 371,000 employees. Even in 1992, Wal-Mart was already the world's largest retailer.

And the board Hillary Clinton sat on was rabidly anti-union, was exploiting sweatshop labor around the world, discriminating against women workers, forcing workers to labor off the clock and destroying communities that did not want them. This should not be a shock: Clinton was a partner in the Rose law firm, one of the most active anti-union law firms in the country.

So, the question still remains: what did Hillary Clinton do--or, not do--when she served on the board of Wal-Mart? Maybe, if her memory was refreshed, she could tell us how she protested the company's relentless union-busting, expressed feminist outrage at the widespread discrimination against women and was horrified that the mushrooming wealth of the Wal-Mart family was made possible on the backs of slave labor around the world.

Her behavior then, when the spotlight was not on and her record did not matter to voters, should tell voters a lot more about her principles and values than the carefully orchestrated image New Yorkers try to figure out now. The voters deserve to know.

For the past 25 years, Jonathan Tasini has been a union leader and organizer, a social activist, and a commentator and writer on work, labor and the economy. From 1990 to April 2003, he served as president of the National Writers Union (United Auto Workers Local 1981) During his tenure, the union tripled in size and became one of the most influential forces in the country for protecting the rights of freelance writers.

I'm still hoping that no one shows up for the election in November.

Doc M tries top justifies the politics of new hope going negative first. How unsurprising.

Maybe Doc M doesn't know that Michelle Obama was on the board of a Chicago company whose only real customer is.... tada! Walmart.

And that she had to leave her position when Obama started his negative campaigning against HRC using Walmart as a bludgeon.

whoa theer speel chicker!

"Evilbitch"?
Is this as far as your 4th grade education got you? Now try to calm down and answer the question like an adult...c'mon, you can do it.

LOD,
If you seek riveting discussion here, you may be a redneck...

What question? You have nothing but self-serving slobbering on this thread. Fuck off.

I ask one question and that's self serving slobbering? Is it that time of month for you?

Ah, yet another gender-based attempt at insult.

You might consider changing your handle to Evil Polock Misogynist, eh?

It works for Doc M.

LOL

A lot of Dems don't vote because they're too busy not-working collecting welfare, drinking wine, and smoking crack.

If you really believe that, it's no surprise you consider yourself a Republican.

Then again, it's also no surprise that most of the people around you consider you a tool.

corky has only insults when her facts aka lies are challenged.

why not admit you support Hillary only for her gender

I ask one question and that's self serving slobbering? Is it that time of month for you?

Its the hormone replacement therapy Corky's been on since his hysterectomy.

Aw Cork, lighten up. If your girl wins the nomination, legitimately, I'll still vote for her...instead of McDubya. I just don't believe in there being some sort of "it's my turn" system to selecting presidential candidates.

Great TR...welcome to Misogynists Anonymous...

Hell She Is McHilDubya:

Tonight on his show, Keith Olbermann eviscerated Hillary Clinton for a good ten minutes for promoting John McCain's presidency over her fellow Democrats. He compared her to Joe Lieberman. He asked "is she equating her time in the East Wing with McCain's time in the Hanoi Hilton?" You have got to watch these videos. They're devastating in only the way that Keith can be.

She Is Bush In A Pants Suit !

Michelle Obama was on the board of a Chicago company whose only real customer is.... tada! Walmart.

Really?

Maybe Corkscrew doesn't know that Wal-Mart is not the "only real customer" of TreeHouse Foods, which is located in Westchester, Illinois. It's "real" customers include Kroger, Topco, US Food Service, Unpro and McDonalds.

Do your homework next time, dumbass. Tada!

WalMart is by far their largest customer. Don't equivocate Doc M. You know you can't spell it.

-Its the hormone replacement therapy Corky's been on since his hysterectomy.

Yeah, it's not the same stuff they gave you with your lobotomy, eh?

"WalMart is by far their largest customer."

Oh, I see. So Wal-Mart isn't the corporation's "only real customer," as you said earlier?

Mmmmmmm....a bit of backtracking. What a sooprise.

Got any facts and figures on that one, Corkscrew?

Thanks Doc. I guess Corker isn't aware that HRT drugs have ZERO to do with brain surgery.

Then again I'm beginning to doubt whether Corky has one of those at all anyway.

He certainly doesn't show it here often, does he?

TONY -

I seem to remember some coherent posts a while back. I may be wrong, since the DR can get a bit hectic. But lately, Corkscrew has been spinning like a whirling dervish, producing one miserably partisan crap dump after another.

Maybe if Bush starts calling himself a Democrat his approval ratings will go up.

Michelle Obama was on the board of a Chicago company whose only real customer is.... tada! Walmart

Treehouse Foods, Inc.

Michelle Obama made 50,000 dollars a year to sit on their board for a year and a half (2005 to May 2007). She deliberately left the board after Obama told a union that he didn't support Walmart because of their unfair labour practices.

This was also about the same time she dropped 80% of her workload from her job a the University in order to help Obama campaign and spend more time with their kids. Was that move okay Corky, or do you see a nefarious reason behind that one too?

1 1/2 years on the board of a local company that was a supplier to WalMart.

This comes from a guy trying to defend a woman who spent 6 years on the board of Walmart itself (1986 to 1992).

Yer point again?

Be Well.

Maybe if Bush starts calling himself a Democrat his approval ratings will go up.

Actually, I think that would be the only way to make the Republican numbers go up.

This is nothing more than reaping what you sow.

TONY & SPUD -

What I've found increasingly with Corkscrew's posts is that you can spend quite a bit of time doing some digging after reading them. Eventually, you will often discover that the posts are at best half-truths. For me, this has been an illuminating lesson in just how the Big Lie works.

A lot of Dems don't vote because they're too busy not-working collecting welfare, drinking wine, and smoking crack.

Speaking of crack, why don't you lick mine?

"not-working" ? Did you finish high school?

:-)

That's because Bush f*cked our entire country up and just keeps on stroking it!

I live in a county that has been voting Republican for at least 50 years straight. My local newspaper is reporting that many voters are switching to the Democratic side. It's not a majority yet, but I think it is symptomatic of national sentiment. The Republicans are in trouble, especially with the economy getting worse by the month.

Actually, the biggest increase of voters comes from those who in the last 3 years or so have registered as "independents" -- those with no particular party affiliation.

Things are looking REAL bad for the Republicans in the next election...

I don't ever remember prospects this poor for the GOP since Jerry Ford after Nixon resigned the presidency!

"Things are looking REAL bad for the Republicans in the next election.."

It will be suitably ironic if the Republicans who pushed the Democratic primary numbers end up being responsible for Hillary getting the job. Way to go Rush.

Hillary has the benefit of a seemingly robust economy when Bill was president. She'll beat McCain to death over his admitted ignorance of economics.

another funny thread. funny because I am sure that most of you actually believe what you are writing.
national forum published its rankings of senators. and for the 2nd year in a row the most liberal senator in the senate is barak Hussein obama.
and as far as people calling themselves democrats. surely this doesnt just ignore all of the people who switched parties just to get hillary a chance to catch up. in the houston chronicle today it said that there were 500,000 people in my beloved state of texas who crossed over and voted for hillary.

"She'll beat McCain to death over his admitted ignorance of economics."

It's possible that John "100 Year War" McCain could lose to her.

in the houston chronicle today it said that there were 500,000 people in my beloved state of texas who crossed over and voted for hillary.

Because they are brain-dead, ammoral, unscrupulous fucktards like Mao who took a tip from Rush Limbaugh and voted for her cos she's obviously the easier candidate fer McLame to beat?
Wow, just wow!

A bag of hammers looks like a fucking Rhodes Scholar when compared to a Texan Dittohead.

Be Well.

/Thanx fer admitting that Obama woulda cleaned Hillary's clock in Texas if it wasn't fer rethug shenanigans. Spud's been saying it fer a while now but it's always nice to find confirmation.

-deliberately left the board after Obama told a union that he didn't support Walmart because of their unfair labour practices.

More because Obama wanted to be able to bash Hillary, his "friend", with the Walmart stick and not have it hit him back.

When a democrat wins the white house, either Mrs. BJ Clinton or Barrack Hussein Obama, there will be good news and bad news. The good news is you'll all find out you're rich! The bad news is you'll lose your tax breaks for the rich.

Here's the facts, the tax rates under Clinton, 1999, and the current rates, under Bush's "tax cut for the rich":

Single making 30K - Clinton, $8,400 Bush $4,500
Single making 50K - Clinton, $14,000 Bush 12,500
Single making 75K - Clinton, $23,250 Bush 18,750
Married making 60K - Clinton, $16,800 Bush $9,000
Married making 75K - Clinton, $21,000 Bush $18,750
Married making 125K - Clinton, $38,750 Bush $31,250

Look it up yourself, see what YOU'LL pay:
www.taxfoundation.org/
publications/show/151.html

Remember John Kennedy's tax cut in 1963? Here's how the marginal rate was changed:

Before the cut (1963),
Married filing jointly, $4000 income, 22%
Married filing jointly, $100,000 income, 75%
Married filing jointly, $400,000 income, 91%

After the cut (1964),
Married filing jointly, $4000 income, 20%
Married filing jointly, $100,000 income, 66%
Married filing jointly, $400,000 income, 77%

I don't remember anyone accusing him of providing "tax cuts for the rich".

Look it up,
