Ralph Nader is launching a third-party campaign for president. The consumer advocate made the announcement Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." He says most Americans are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties, and that none of the presidential contenders are addressing ways to stem corporate crime and Pentagon waste and promote labor rights.

WhooooHooo!!!

.....errrr....nevermind.....

When does the 21st century get underway?

His slogan should be "Send in the Clowns." Did Ralph Nader even announce a running mate last time?

So then, the obsessive-compulsive nutjob in the wrinkled suit is out to ruin another presidential election? Check with Al Gore on how Mr. Nader helped to get the Democrats into the White House!

I voted for him in 2000. I honestly thought there'd be a four way split. Didn't happen. His time has passed.

he is on meet the press and the question was just asked...

sshhhhhh.....lets wait on the answer..

and the answer is...............

waiting......
cue music to jeopardy.......

(sorry rcade about the.....but nader is stalling....

and waiting.................YES!!!
!!!!!

and yes I know it was advanced in the headline but I just wanted all of you to get the 'feel' of a breaking news story.
so what about a paul/nadar ticket?
and does this mean that john mccain is the next president or is this too little, too late, and a failed idea anyway?
and what if bloomberg gets in? wow, it could get even more interesting.

Those Democrats that voted for this lightweight in 2000 are the reason that we have had to deal with this Criminal Administration. By 2004 nobody cared by 2008 this Asshole has lost all of the goodwill that he accured all of his life, what a shame a once Great Man now a SCUM SUCKING FOOL!!!!

If this guy is taking public funds the law should be changed. I would urge someone or anyone for that matter to see how Nader profits personally from these endeavors. There is definately a profit motive that has never been explored or brought to light and it needs to.

actually celisary..nadar has a pretty good answer to your comment. he talked about the large percentage of votes he got that were republicans who were not going to vote for gore and a large number that,if not voting for him would have stayed at home anyway. its a compelling argument and then when asked this question, talked about gores answer to why bush won and it was the same old democrat bullshit we read here about twice a week.

so you can blame him if you want, but gore and kerry have to take some blame.
and he talked about an interesting idea on his website...about a mobilization of people in every congressional district in the country to take back congress.....could that work because it would put many people that post here on the same side.

I love how party drones get so upset that an American is exercising his right to run for president without spending millions on the faux-democratic primary process in order to seek the nomination of one of the two hopelessly corrupt entities that have been screwing us for years. As much as you people seem to hate it, we are still technically a democracy.

Sorry, but Al Gore was running against a talking chimp in 2000. Gore should have won by a landslide and he also should have challenged the obviously screwed up voting. You can't blame Nader for that.

gee, who'd've thought?!?

Nader's running won't matter this time.

well but this is a good history lesson for our young punk posters. if they want to know who harold stassen was, you could just tell them that he was the nader of the 60's.......

His slogan should be "Send in the Clowns." Did Ralph Nader even announce a running mate last time?

the audacity of hope..I remember you stating that "some" people are to cynical about obama.. kettle meet pot.

As much as you people seem to hate it, we are still technically a democracy.

No, we have never been a democracy, and never can be without rewriting the constitution. Our form of government is a republic.

"gore and kerry have to take some blame..."

Many factors go in to the double dose of dubya, but gore and kerry are not two of them, BLT. We've had this discussion before. Blame Florida and Jeb, Ohio and Diebold, a republican SCOTUS, hanging chads, disenfranchised blacks, Karl Rove, those gross bastards who called themselves the swift boat liars. Even blame Nader, of course. but Gore and Kerry conducted themselves admirably and did all that any candidates can ever be asked to do. herm

that much bitterness, whisky, cherry juice and sweet and sour mix and you have an old fashioned whisky sour.. which describes the whole democratic party..

Ralph has done MORE for the nation than obama, hillary ever has..COMBINED..

btw..now you have your scapegoat for losing in 2008..

Ralph Nader has every right to run. Suck it up. If any of the Democrats had addressed what *should* be the biggest issue in this campaign, corporate domination of the American government, political process, economy and culture, he wouldn't run.

Nor has any Democrat candidate advocated ending an imperialist foreign policy, closing some of the 600 or so military bases around the globe, or slashing the bloated Pentagon budget. Just the contrary, Obama thinks our military isn't big enough. That's insane.

"Ralph has done MORE for the nation than obama, hillary ever has..COMBINED.."

I agree.

what *should* be the biggest issue in this campaign, corporate domination of the American government, political process, economy and culture

Sounds like a good arguement for LESS government...and fewer government programs...equals...fewer people to be corrupted by power...the better for the people...

Celery, did you wake up on he wrong side of the bed again or did your mommy forget to bring you your poptarts this morning.

I thought that I might vote for Nader as a protest vote even though I disagree with him on some issues, but when he opened his big mouth about toughening labor laws it was just too much. Considering that this state has been fucked up by the damn unions, I won't be voting for Nader, even as a protest vote.

Vote Libertarian!

"Sounds like a good arguement for LESS government..."

No, it's an argument for radical change aimed at separating corporate America from the government. It may well be impossible to eliminate the corporate State, but it's worth attempting. It should be the No. 1 issue in the election, but won't if, for no other reason, the corporate MSM won't let it.

Does not matter if Nader runs or not, McCain will still win. You haters really make me laugh. Gore and Kerry both lost and you can not get over it, LET IT GO. It is time for you people to grow up and realize that things do not always go your way.
I read some of your posts and have to think what poor pahetic litle fools some of you are.

Asshole oughta be shipped to Gitmo for what he did to siphon off votes Gore needed in '00. Because of Nader's hubris, this entire nation (and parts of the rest of the world) has endured eight years of needless suffering at the hands of DubyaCo.

Our Presidential election process really ought to have some provision for winnowing out candidates who cannot conceivably win, but who could unduly influence the outcome.

I know Nader's doddering by now, but he's still the most dangerous man in America. Unsafe at any speed, y'know?

08R4ever
There is not a single blue state from 04 that will go red. The mobilization of new voters, the absence of good R. candidate, and the large numbers of young Repubs for Obama will mean a landslide victory for Barack. McCain will be conceding before we even count Califonia's votes.

This will lead to 25 years of republican wandering as Neil Boortz predicts. Good bye and good riddens to failed policy.

John "100 Year War" McFlopper isn't going to win anything. He already looks like The Mummy. Wouldn't surprise me if he dropped dead before the election.

WHORE..WTF..Ae you insane, and who would make this determination. If Nader was siphoning from Republicans I am sure you would feel differently. YOU LOST, GET OVER IT AND GET A FUCKING LIFE. For some of you people to be so obsessed with this up to 8 years later is neither normal nor healthy. I suggest you folks leave your parents basement, get a job, get a girlfriend/boyfriend and enjoy life.

So, how much do you think the repulsican national committee paid this looney to announce?

Nadar got .3% of the vote in 04. Yes, that is a decimal before the 3. He is inconsequencial.

No, the dummycrats paid him so this controversy would start.

With Nader's established anti-lobbyist platform and McCain's hands planted deeply in the pockets of the Washington vote purchasers, Obama can let Nader do all the negative campaigning for him. Gotta love it. Go Nader.

"So, how much do you think the repulsican national committee paid this looney to announce?"

This "looney" was probably working to make your air and water cleaner, your workplace safer, the food you eat and the products you buy safer, while you were still a runny nosed little brat.

If Al Gore hadn't come into WV (think coal, and lots of it) preachin' "alternative fuel" bullshit,he woulda carried this state, and Fla wouldn't have mattered...

When you're offered a shit sandwich(right-leaning neocon) or a douche bag(left-leaning neocon), ANY third party candidate seems refreshing.

Ralph knows something that you partisan sheep don't seem to be able to wrap your narrow minds around...the NEOCONS control both parties.

MrSoul,
What PNAC commandments are part of Obama's plan?

Gore did not lose the election, a recount was suspended and Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court. This made the Oligarchy very happy.

Kerry didn't lose either, as well documented by HBO, Greg Pallast, and the Bradblog. But, the Oligarchy was on the fence by this time.

It is impossible that Obama got zero votes in 80 districts, as reported by New York voting machines. The Oligarchy has had enough of BushCo, but still wanted one of their own in the White House. Democrat or Republican hardly matters.

Insane McCain:

www.counterpunch.org

If Nader is inconsequencial then why are so many lemmings going apeshit?

I am just wondering if the Big D Democrats will act like little d democrats and let the people decide or if they will use armies of lawyers to try to get Nader disqualified from state ballot after state ballot. Considering their previous history with third party candidates and the fact that internal DNC party rules lead to Michigan and Florida voters being disenranchised, I am sure they will use the trial lawyers to fight Nader.

Nutcase; thanks for the good laugh. Oh my gosh, if it is on HBO then it must be gospel. I am sure you believe michael moore movies are gospel also.

Maybe I should have used Oligarchy(thx nutcase) instead of Neocon to describe those actually pulling the strings on both parties. As far as Obama...he does talk a good game, but big business pumps as much money into his campaign as the other candidates. Several corporations cover their bases and donate to both parties. In the end, Obama will be just as beholden to the Oligarchy as Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan....

WHo the hell is neil boortz? And who cares what he thinks?

You see the depth of the problem.

Both parties are corrupted by the eltists, the globalists, the Neo-Con/ Neo-Lib Free Market true believers.

Hence America's insane military spending.

Hence America's economic/ military interference in the rest of the world.

Obama knows wot America is up against and unlike Nader he may be able to do some good in DC rather than the same old same old.

Nader will prolly get half his support from delighted RT's the same as he did last time. Even if stood a shot in hell of getting elected (which he doesn't) He would be a lame duck from the get-go.

Nobody is arguing that the sytem isn't bent or that Obama isn't beholden to the powers that be. Just that he's less beholden, and thus more liable to get stuff done and not fall back into old patterns.

Don't think Nader will prove to be much of a factor this time around. Maybe disgruntled Paulites will vote for him. prolly not even that level of support will arise for him.

GObama.

Be Well.

This idiot will help the Rethuglicans stay in control. Since most if not all Naderets are former Democrats, every vote for numskull is a vote away from the Demo winner. If Nader wants the Republicans out. He is doing everything he can to see them win.

Nader has the IQ of an eggplant and just as good a chance of winning.

Has Danni been here yet?

I picture her hearing this announcement on Meet Depress and throwing her box of chocolates at the TV--screaming "Bastard"!

He was on the ballot here in CA fro the primary--TWICE--

For the Green Party and the Peace and Freedom Party.

So which party is it? I guess if someone is listed 3 or 4 times on a ballot--some folks might pick his name because it is on there so many times.

What's great about Nader is that he can come and talk the facts-- about the lack of everything Obama posseses--and likely help Hillary--if he gets on the TV enough.

He is critical of McCain too and Hillary--but pointing to Obama might be enlightening for the enchanted forest dwellers.

John "100 Year War" McFlopper isn't going to win anything.

It is most likely it will come down to this question.

Most everyone has come to realize the war was a mistake.

To continue now on the bases that 'well were there now', is falling apart in no small part to McCain and others foretelling a decades long commitment.

That was the strongest point Nader made today if the Dems can't win this year on a get out of Iraq platform, they should fold the tent.

If the Dem Presidential candidate falters in a commitment to get out of Iraq Nader could very well become a spoiler. Baring that IMO it's even money from who he will suck votes.

Ralph Nader will be seventy four years old on Wednesday February 27th.

He will have no significant effect on the election.

I don't know how your state works, but I am guessing this is a fusion candidacy. In New York and some New England Statse there can be fusion candidates running. For example, in New York the GOP can somestimes manage to get the Conservative Party endorse and I know that in previous years in Vermont Libertarians candidates were also on the ballot as Republican.

I think fusion candidates are great because they can give theird parties a voice. Imagine if a Dem candidate in the primaries could get a Green Party endorsement but not another canidate. It would do wonders for that candidate's electability vs anoter candidate. Same gos for the Republican, if a Repulican in the primaries, like Ron Paul, could have gotten the LP endorsement, that would have garanteed there was no LP candidate "taking away" votes from the GOP candidate in teh general election. In other words, people would not be afraid of theird parties if we had more fusion canidates.

"o, how much do you think the repulsican national committee paid this looney to announce?"

How much did the DNC pay Huckelberry to stay in to spoil it for Mitt?

isnt the exact definition a democratic republican or is that splitting hairs?
and the point is of course, that he has a right to run if he wants to since perot helped to give us blowjob billybut of course the left always forgets about that when this subject comes up.

HERM.....as to your attack on the other thread, here is a perfect example. I said democratic republicaN because I was listening to stravinsky and watching the senior skins while typing and I made a typo.
but I am sure that wont make any difference in attacks and insults.

This is good news for Republicans.
You know Nadar will siphon Democratic votes.

Now, all that is needed is for Bloomberg to
get in the race. This will siphon off more
leftist votes.

if you saw the interview this morning , you would have heard him state that according to him, republicans made up 39 to 40 % of his total vote and if thats true then he might not have made such a difference after all.
and he also delivered a scathing attack on bush and cheney who he called the two most impeachable administration in history so that should put him in a good way with any liberal.
again when it was perot helping to put the first liar in office, it wasnt a problem, was it?

I am wondering about Nader's influence on the votes. He has always taken votes away from the Democrats. Could it be in reverse this time? Could he take votes away from the Republicans? Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and their ilk would probably vote for Nader knowing he can't win but not wanting to cast their vote for McCain. There could be many Republicanms doing that. Any comments or thoughts about this?

Nader is on MSNBC right now.

Good question.... I really do not know.

I made the same point yesterday. Nader is an unknown entity this time. The only Dem votes outside the few who actually believe he can Win would come if the Dem standard bearer hesitates on getting out of Iraq. The Reps are all looking for a straw to grab McCane is to old and to closely tied to Bush policy. Either Hill or Obama are a cinch, and the honest ones know it. Look to bullshit scandals they are on the way.

Nader isn't really going to matter in the long run.

One or the other, Racism or anti-woman POTUS will be the final factors.

No matter what so many say, they will not,in the privacy of the voting booth, vote for a non-white or woman for the job.

Talking is easy, but the final count won't be in question.(And it won't be Nader)

Nader is not "unknown", he is very well known...But nobody has ever took his running for office seriously...So he takes a few votes here and there, and fades out till the next election. Reagan was old which is same liberal argument about McCain, but wasn't tied to Carter's policies and never his old age affected duty in the Oval Office.

Come again?

Anyone care to take up the "experience" question with Mr. Nader? Has he ever been elected to anything, ever? Besides president of his own fan club, I mean.

"Anyone care to take up the "experience" question with Mr. Nader? Has he ever been elected to anything, ever? Besides president of his own fan club, I mean."

Nader has been fighting for worker rights, consumer rights, environmental protection, etc., before you were in diapers.

Hell, Nader was fighting for progressive causes before Obama was in diapers.

That doesn't exactly qualify him to be president, now does it?

Has Danni been here yet?

From her posting history reference Nader....she may be planning a painful death for Nader.

Probably involving a Pinto and a Corvair.

"a Pinto and a Corvair"

Both excellent cars.

Designed by top people.

Top.

But I'd prefer to be rear-ended in a 'Vair.

Did I tell you about my Durango? It has 142,000 miles and the original rear brakes are at 90%. I just swapped the front pads and bought the first set of new tires.

I have had to replace the stereo speakers, however.

You've got 142k on one set of tires? Does it fly?

No, it's a big truck with a light load and I don't stop much.

As for fly; I used to replace the tires on my Baron every year anyway. It weighed more than the Durango and landed at about 80 knots.

Speakers went to shit.

And some dumbfuck who couldn't be trusted to change a battery smoked the computer which led to a disgusting series of reasons to stay the hell away from hick town (That would be Bastrop, Texas) dealers.

I bought three minivans and two Durangos from the same outfit in Austin. Over the three owners the same service manager has been there; Along with some very good mechanics with decades in the same shop.

Would somebody please give this guy a Corvair for his personal campaign car?

Maybe him and LaRouche can can hook up and start a third party

Let the man run, he obviously appeals to a percentage of the population that is disillusioned with the idea of a 2 party system.

Not allowing Nadir to run is at its base a disenfranchisement of voters. All the whining of "but he cost us the election" is the very reason we're stuck choosing the lesser of 2 evils every election cycle.

We need more Nadirs, Perots, Libertarian and Green Parties, not less.

It'd suck if Mccain won the presidency, but I won't lay that at the foot of Ralph or his constituents. The blame falls on the people that vote for MCcain, just like the past 7 years are to be blamed on the people that voted for Bush.

Get over it

Let me predict right now that Ron Paul, whether he runs 3rd party or not will get more votes than Nader.

Yeah, well those idiots who voted for Perot were the reason we had to last thru a CONVICTED criminal for 8 frickin years. Not to mention a coward who couldn't keep his dick in his pants and who allowed the world's worst terror orginazitaion to grow unchecked.

Bush has been trying to clean up his fucking mess since his 8th month in the White House. And you want to bitch about Nader?

"So much easier to blame nader"

Fuck Ralph, run for fucking dogcatcher or something. Who the fuck thinks an inexperienced unelected douche can just waltz into the White House, anyways? I'm disillusioned with health care but I sure as fuck wouldn't want Michael Moore to operate on me!

Any democrat can steal his platform and make him irrelevant.

It's not the platform, it's the aura. "I'm different, look at me!"

Even if that's what ralph is about, and I don't think it is, that's got little to do with why he gets support.

From who? From enough people that every Obama/Clinton supporter is losing their minds right now....

.........................assho le.................

I'm considering voting for Nader. It looks like the Libertarians are going to nominate a complete whackjob. I agree with Nader on most social issues - the war on drugs is a failure, gay marriage or at least civil unions should be supported, etc. He is by no means a fiscal conservative, but he attacks corporate welfare and wants to stop subsidizing oil companies, which is a good start. If I'm going to be forced into supporting a government that spends trillions annually, at least Nader would push for that money to be spent on the right things.

You could just stay home Joe, it would have the same effect.

As an American I feel that I have the duty to vote. Staying home is not an option. I will therefore vote for the person whose principles are most in accord with mine, regardless of the potential outcome. I apologize for not being a party whore who will vote for a person based on the letter after their name and not based on what they actually stand for.

I think it bears remembering that Bill Clinton would never have been elected without Ross Perot's candidacy. Third parties candidacies arise when the two establishment parties have forgotten something.

It seems that some percentage of the population doesn't feel satisfied by Obama's populist class-warfare tripe or Hillary's uncountable persona changes and hypocrisy. Imagine that!

May well get some McCain-doubters in there too. Ralph Nader demonstrates that there is long-term value in being long-term consistent in what you stand for. Perhaps if our "establishment" candidates had recognized this, he wouldn't need to drag his sorry bones back out on the campaign trail.

I find it all pretty funny, because the dems are gonna blame him for their defeat again, and the Republicans will again take this as a sign that they're really doing just fine and don't have to improve, and they're both wrong, as usual!

"It looks like the Libertarians are going to nominate a complete whackjob"

Are they going to nominate Badnarik again?

Badnarik was nothing compared to the guy they're pushing now on their website. This guy supports the line-item veto and English-only voting ballots.

MR. Nader is running because he loves this country and can't stand by and see it run into the ground by corporate puppets.

"MR. Nader is running because he loves this country and can't stand by and see it run into the ground by corporate puppets."

Oh, that explains why he hasn't run for other offices during all these years, why he hasn't started a real political movement, why he just pops up in presidential election years to keep his face in the news.

I have 10,000 times the respect for Rep. Kucinich that I do for Ralph Nader.

I have 10,000 times the respect for Rep. Kucinich that I do for Ralph Nader.

10,000 x 0 = 0

I'm glad Nader's running. I was also glad that Ross Perot ran when he did. I disliked both and knew both had very little chance of winning, but someone needs to step up to the plate and tell these fucked up Republicans and Democrats that we are sick of them all.

Maybe one day, one election, we'll send a message and flush the bastards away.

Whatever Nader says about where his campaign money is going to come from and why he has entered the race he knows that a lot of his money will come from Republicans and that all hcan achieve is to siphon off some Democrat votes. In 2000 this certainly happened. He cost Gore New Hampshire and Florida, either of which would have spared us the long national nightmare that has been the Bush administration, and so he's just as much to blame for the Iraq invasion, occupation and fiasco and the general corruption and incompetence that has defined this godawful administration.

In 2004 he ran again, supported even more by Republican money but his effect was negligible. Bush would still have won whether he was there or not.

Now in 2008 he's going to run again. He has every right to do so but his only possible function is as a spoiler and he must be well aware of that. But lucky for us, after eight years of the worst president and VP ever and the GOP nomination of a 71-year old man who half his party don't want Nader will have even less effect on the result than he did in 2004.

slightly older than McCain, but much more straight talking and honest.

If I had a few extra bucks right now I'd go buy a Corvair.

I think it's much too early to call Bush the worst president ever and it's impossible to compare Cheney with other VP's because, unlike them, he seems to have had a lot of power.

Certainly, nobody was happy with Roosevelt after he got us into an initially unpopular war and then we proceeded to get our asses kicked for a year or two until we got ready. It took time to see that he was fundamentally right.

No one liked Truman when he sacked the very popular McArthur. It took time to see he was fundamentally right.

I could go on, but it's silly (aside from the legitimate criticisms of incompetent execution) to say one battlefield in a global war which will last 50 years constitutes a failure overall. The battle in Iraq is not over yet. Time will tell how it sorts out. Even when it ends, the Terror War is not close to over.

Like Bush or don't, but drawing historical parallels is premature.

Nader, McCain, Hillary, Obama, it does not matter. Unfortunately it took segregationist Governor Wallace to reveal the truth that "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, detaining protesters, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, stealing private lands (Kelo decision), warrant-less wiretapping and refusing to investigate 9/11 properly. They are both guilty of treason.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation.

"Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great nation."

Yeah, and if he doesn't get the nomination then he should run as an independent.

The Democrats have only themselves to blame for Nader running.

Yepperoni, cause on the left it is NEVER their fault.

Can you say Butterfly Ballot Buchanan? I thought you could.

"The Democrats have only Nader to blame for Nader running."

Sorry, but Nader wouldn't run if the Democrats didn't hide under the bed anytime someone mentions "corporate power". Or challenges the bloated Pentagon and military-industrial complex. Obama's foreign policy of a kinder, gentler imperialism doesn't cut it.

"I think it's much too early to call Bush the worst president ever...it's silly (aside from the legitimate criticisms of incompetent execution) to say one battlefield in a global war which will last 50 years constitutes a failure overall."

Although easily the worst, Iraq is but one mistake and/or disaster among many that this godawful administration is responsible for. The war was ill-advised in the first place and the initially circumstantial evidence that it was based on lies becomes more solid the more evidence is uncovered -- a secret energy meeting reportedly displaying maps of Iraqi oilfields, Downing street and Plame for just three among many such things which taken together defy coincidence. Although the human and financial costs to us have been very bad they pale into insignificance in comparison to those suffered by the Iraqis with their several hundred thousand deaths, injuries and illnesses and refugee crisis either as a direct or indirect result of our invasion and the failure to provide governance or security in five years of occupation.

If Iraq had been its only monumental blunder this administration would be down there in the bottom five presidencies but as anyone can think of at least five other failures, weaknesses or blunders with few or no successes to offset them it has a very strong claim to be the worst of all. Johnson's handling of the Vietnam war may have been as bad as Bush's of the Iraq war and occupation but at least Johnson had Civil Rights io mitigate it. What has Bush achieved? Creating a 5-4 right wing Supreme Court seem to be about it and the support for that only comes from what used to be his half of the country.

How ironic that Nader set back the clock on environmental issues he fought for his whole career by being an egotistical buffoon helping another egotistical buffoon occupy the White House the last 7 years.
