The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs.

Mystery Meatloaf?

Now we know why it was such a big secret anyway.

Blech, just blech.

Hope CChris had fish fer dinner tonight.

Good lasagna!
With beef (not the "ready to eat" kind) with lots of sauce and cheese.
Salad and garlic bread. Yummm!

Just saw this warning on the local tv news tonight and the two guys arrested for the animal abuse last night on tv. Disturbing to watch.

this is for all the kids who get free and reduced lunches.

way to go!

soylent green is abused animals.

Yummmm indeed. Spud likey the lasagna muchly.

Gotsta have the garlic bread.

Wot's salad?

Wonder if Lisa makes a good Lasagna wot with her Italian heritage and all.

Betcha she does.

Just saw this warning on the local tv news tonight and the two guys arrested for the animal abuse last night on tv. Disturbing to watch.

Two things Spud really hates are stupidity and cruelty to animals so this one is kind of a two-fer. Not the good kind.

Be Well.

At least now we know the answer to the question, "Where's the beef?"

I just knew someone was going to use that line but it wasnt going to be me.
corky..shame on you. lol

oh and ask lisa where the beef is and she will tell you.......its in southeast texas.........

LISA>......WHERE ARE YOU>.....GET YOUR ASS OUT OF BED ALREADY.

YEAH!

And this story gives you Pleasure exactly ------ how?

Is it the fact that these animals where tormented and tortured that makes you all happy? Or the fact that the kids who have to eat reduced lunches potentially ate tainted meat that gives you such a charge?

Either way your comment makes you out to be one sadistic piece of shit!

That's not beef that's a half a vienna Sausage.

People should just die and then sue the meatpackers.
The Libertarians

Product of a Fast Food Nation.

Get the movie and watch it. You will never look at slaughterhouse beef the same way again.

The Truth is tough to swallow.

I grew up on a farm, around lots of animals until I went away to college... There is no excuse, ever for being cruel to an animal. The people who do this deserve whatever bad comes their way.

I am not one for big gov, but this is one place where they can help. I am glad to see that treating these animals like this will have some consequences. I hope that the other companies are paying attention.

This is a fine example of getting "BIG" government out of the lives' of citizens. Industry is "enlightened" and will police itself. Government regulation, inspection and oversight are intrusions into the corporate privacy and should not be tolerated.
Spend the $$$$$ on an illegal war so that the USDA funding is cut and all of this "tainted" beef is shipped to school kids. Has Al-Quada infiltrated the meat industry? We need more phone taps and torture.
Yes, thanks to the Bush administration Americans are safer. OOOOPPPS!!!!!! Look out for the flying pig!!!

Does anyone think this incident is an exception and not the norm? The commercial meat and pultry industry is hell on earth. It should be exposed, 100%

The sick, sadistic fuckers should be prosecuted heavily.

In Canada we've come to realize that a "downer" is a good candidate for BSE - that is, mad cow disease. I have to wonder if any of these cattle were tested for BSE or if the US government is still burying its head in the sand of "it can't happen here."

I'm guessing that either they found out there is BSE but are keeping their mouths shut because of what it would do to beef exports, not to mention bringing the cattle industry to its knees; or they haven't tested because they're too afraid of what they'll find. In any case the giant recall seems to be a bit too quick to make me ever want to buy anything but chicken in the US.

Where's the beef?

"YEAH!

And this story gives you Pleasure exactly ------ how?"

Can this retard get anything right?

Either way your comment makes you out to be one sadistic piece of shit!

Good form red.... You never let me down.

as if there was any connection between the video tapes of suspect animals and the flow of meat into the distribution system.

Did you shoot the cow, or slice it's jugular, or what?

There is no such thing as mad cow disease.

Pinche Mao

r if the US government is still burying its head in the sand of "it can't happen here."

What do you mean "if"?

But of course the free market is meant to regulate itself. The hell with the fact that maximizing profits makes corporate culture criminogenic in nature. We need to protect shareholders first and consumers last. Enough of them get sick or drop dead from a defective product then the public will stop buying it. End of story. And if anyone should sue because of the defective product, then the ambulance chasing lawyers are to blame and they are just looking to get paid. Frivolous lawsuit and such. God forbid we hold corporate america responsible under the watch of the party of resposibility. To the republican party "personal respoonsibility" is a motto for someone else to live by and a nice talking point.

At least now we know the answer to the question, "Where's the beef?"

~Corky.

Actually, Spud's original headline sed Where's the Beef? Chuck It!" before the blog-god improved it to be more informative and kicked it onto the front page.

The more Spud thinks about this story the more pissed off Spud is become. Watched the undercover vid on this today. Assholes poking cows in the eye, using cattle prods, ramming them with forklifts. Just sickening shiat. Watching these half dead and possibly diseased animals stagger their way to slaughter on their way to becoming lunch for uncounted numbers of school-kids is a stomach turning affair.

bellaspapa: The sick, sadistic fuckers should be prosecuted heavily.

THIS. A thousand times THIS!

A pair of "former employees" getting a fine does not even begin to cut it. People need to go to jail for these immoral and unhealhy actions. Companies need to get REAL fines like in the millions of dollars. Howard Stern sez "fuck" and he can get a quarter million dollar fine but this shiat gets a light slap on the wrist?

Spud calls shenanigans on that shiat!

Anybody remember the meat packing guy who wanted to test all his cows for mad cow disease? He wanted to be able to put a label on his beef saying "100% Tested and Mad Cow Free". Anybody remember Bush the corporate meat puppet telling him he couldn't?

Do you kids know how few inspectors there are these days because of Bush?

The guy is a dangerous corporate whore as well as being a war criminal. If America were a true democracy him and Cheney would have long since been impeached indicted and imprisoned.

As it is America has a choice now between three candidates. John McCain a total corporate whore a' la Bush. Hillary the corporate light whore.

...And Barack Obama.

America's last best chance.

08ama '08.

Don't fuck this up, America.

Be Well.

We don't need no stinkin' regulation. The industry can regulate itself. This story proves it.

Sincerely,
Libertarian Man

I wish the government would put all of the cattle farmers out of business and run all of the US meat operations on their own. They would make the best beef ever, there would never be another recall in the history of the universe, and it would only be $1 a pound. I love the government and I badly need its meat.

Liberal Male

Whoops. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Does this headline mean Kirstie Alley has been summoned for the "Cheers" reunion?

There should be no gov't oversight or regulation of the beef industry, or any industry for that matter, because if certain companies kill people with their products, they will eventually go out of business, and those who lost loved ones could just make more.

Joe the Libertarian Gov't Loan Bitch

provided meat to school lunch programs.

This has already been the subject of 2 other articles here. Thankfully, this one puts more emphasis on the fact that this meat was going to kids, a point I was apparently unsuccessful in getting across to the majority of posters here.

"So what if cows get abused?" was the most common answer to pleas of sanity.

2 words for these cattle-abusing asshats: Temple Grandin.

this one puts more emphasis on the fact that this meat was going to kids,

Posted by Alexandrite

I guess it's worse if some kid gets it in a free lunch than if I get it at an expensive steak house.... Is that your point? If it is, I don't get your point!

All cattle farms should be closed immediately as a result of this incident. The government should take over all farming operations and pay mediocre employees $55,000/year plus full benefits and a pension at age 62 to beat up the cows themselves and give us meat that's just as bad as we get now from the private companies. This will all be in the name of the government and therefore I will trust it and eat the meat.

Liberal Male

If you think they treat thoes cows bad, you should see what they do to corn!!! They pull the ears off, shake the hell out of them with screens and that's before they ever get out of the field. It Gets Worse.

"if any of these cattle were tested for BSE or if the US government is still burying its head in the sand of "it can't happen here. - Me"

Neat trick.

by just quoting a fragment of the sentence you can change the meaning.

Sort of like this:

"We need to protect shareholders first - 726"

But such tricks are cheap so I won't resort to them.

Did you know how many cows have had BSE in the US? The answer is 3. How many cows are in the US? 42 million. Doesn't that number seem suspiciously low? Do you know how many cattle the US tests? 45,000. You do the math. Your government considers that an acceptable risk. How do you feel about it?

"Bush the corporate meat puppet - Dethspud"

Sometimes quoting a sentence fragment can make you pee your pants laughing. Funny flag for the best laugh I've had all day!

Hey Snippy,

The majority of the kids who ate the suspect beef paid for it. They don't have separate lines for the 'free lunch' kids and the the paying customers.

Only in your sad "Greedy Obese Pervert" little mind could anyone make this sick objection.

The GOP, bringing Democracy to the World one dead baby at a time!!!!

Only in America.

More than 100 years after Upton Sinclair and we're still working on whether we should have an F.D.A. with some real power.

Our party politics suck- they get in the way of any real protection of citizens or any real progress in this country.

I'm beginning to lean towards the idea of a benevolent dictatorship. And no, Spuddie, I don't mean Obama.

"a benevolent dictatorship"

Last one was Hammurabi's.
And what happens when the "benevolent" dictator dies?

Too bad homo sapiens is wired to guarantee this won't work.

How are you going to recall meat back to February 2006. It's already been consumed. Some of these cows were sick and could barely walk and would be shoved into the food pile anyway.

THIS is what happens with Bush and the Republicans at the helm.
Bush has INTENTIONALLY slashed our tax dollars to every single agency that was formed to protect the American consumer. Whether the Dept. of Agriculture, the FDA, Medicare payments to physicians and hospitals, FEMA -- you name and Bush has done everything in his power to destroy it.

Bush either wants to privatize every government agency which means they will operate on pure profit and cut corners everywhere when it comes to safety or else he has cut funding back so much there is no money available for inspectors to enforce the quality and safety regulations.

I directly blame Bush and his "destroy America" agenda.
Don't like what I'm saying? Prove me wrong.
Show me ONE article where it says Bush has not underfunded on purpose every single agency and program that was enacted to help and protect Americans. Wait until your own kids eat some of this rotten food that Bush encouraged to be allowed to get thru the system. Anything Bush can do to reap profit for his corporate boys by not enforcing any safety provisions he will continue to do it.
NEVER have we had a more corrupt and selfish man in the Presidency.

The gene pool needs to be distilled.

The gene pool needs to be distilled. Zatoichi

As in vaporized and then cooled?

Actually this is where a bit of cut and paste might work wonders.

Helps my prose.

"As in vaporized and then cooled?"

Just might happen that way.
The US and Russia have something approaching 20,000 nuclear weapons between them.

A rare but stupid extinction mechanism: Self-inflicted.

Consider the apocalyptic fantasies that abound.

Barring nuclear war, though, "culling the litter" may be more appropriate.

There are a very large number of planets just like this one in this galaxy alone.

And there are a large number of galaxies.

But their numbers pale in comparison to the national debt.

"Too bad homo sapiens is wired to guarantee this won't work."

I don't disagree with you- I was ventilating, not proposing any sort of real solution.

The only thing that really works to rid government of do-nothing bureaucrats and despots has been done twice. Once in France, once in Russia.

And even in those instances, corruption crept back in as fast as was humanly possible, which is fuckin'-A fast.

Chris, if you look at any problem you can find a way to pin it on George Bush. You're going to be awfully lonely and listless when he's gone you know.

But of course the free market is meant to regulate itself. The hell with the fact that maximizing profits makes corporate culture criminogenic in nature.

There comes a point where the expression of one's populist ideology becomes child-like in its absurdity.

One need not look very far on this website to find such an example.

The big, conspiratorial, and evil "beef industry" isn't going to do anything to jeapordize the public's perception of the safety of the product it produces.

People who weave intricate conspiracy theories about "big corporations" that gleefully risk the gullible mass of human sheep with BSE contamination simply because they wish to "maximize profits" are exhibiting a level of incandescent stupidity that is simply breathtaking.

If my customer simply needs to walk an extra 10 feet down the aisle to purchase chicken, pork, emu, fish, or whatever the fuck.....it's not like I'm holding them hostage. And more often than not, my customer is a fairly ignorant son of a bitch whose understanding of BSE and its transmission is completely informed (if at all) by the 500 - 1,000 word bag of shit fed to him by his popular culture journalist.

He may not know much, but he knows a "corporation" is involved---and that's good enough for him.

No more thought required.

Vote Obama.

Oh shit, I need to pay my gas bill.

My foot itches.

I wish that bitch in the cube next to me would turn her radio down.

God I hate Clear Channel stations.

For any number of reasons I've hashed and re-hashed on this site--over and over again---the risk of "Mad Cow" disease in this country is statistically negligible.

You don't eat the cattle of the age that contract the disease.

And unless you're into some really exotic, nasty shit---you generally don't even eat the tissue that contains the disease.

A federal law requiring the industry to test every slaughtered animal for BSE makes about as much common and economic sense as hand-sorting every truckload of coal for diamonds.

This is a media-generated crisis that perpetuates itself due to the ignorance of the media consumer and the complete lack of ethics exhibited by people who practice professional journalism.

Pretty much any stupid fucking organism with the ability to breathe involuntarily possesses the ability to use a hyper-inflated concept of risk-aversion as a premise to an argument for or against something.

In fact, that goes along ways towards explaining the continued existence of contemporary, left-wing ideology and its domestic mouthpiece--the Democrat party.

Your assignment is to go find me a deeply personal and heart-wrenching story of an American family that has been torn apart due to the death and destruction wrought by Mad Cow disease.

Surely there must be hundreds.

Cue piano---minor key

The corporations knew---and they lied to maximize profits.

Now families are struggling to put their lives back together.

Next, on 20/20.

Really low bass note---minor key

Did you know how many cows have had BSE in the US? The answer is 3. How many cows are in the US? 42 million. Doesn't that number seem suspiciously low? Do you know how many cattle the US tests? 45,000.

Do you know a fucking thing about how the disease manifests itself?

Do you know a fucking thing about why a certain test set might be selected as opposed to another in an overall population of organisms?

Do you know why WHO doesn't spend resources testing nuns for HIV?

Do you know the difference between a 24 month old Brangus steer, an 11 year-old Holstein cow, a 6 year old Hereford bull, and the different roles each type of animal plays in the commercial cow business?

Of course you don't.

"Cows" are the ubiquitous, black-n-white critters we see on the Chick-Fil-A billboards.

We eat them.

And we get milk from the really cute ones that we don't kill to eat.

Weeeeee.

Vote Obama.

Hey Pinochet, you could save yourself a lot of typing by just linking to some Cattle Association lobbyist site.

And you could shed yourself of a lot of ideological bullshit by simply informing yourself.

Education is the lowest common denominator.

Hey at least Pinche doesn't snizzle on His career with drizzle.

Larry Mohr

Sorry, what did you say. I was listening to a Chomsky talk.

www.radicalradio.org

Believe it or not, Bill, the people who produce beef (and form associations to insulate and protect themselves from mob stupidity and its statist consequences) know far more about the process than the starry-eyed little leftist fuck who just graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism.

I can assure you "Cattle Associations" aren't conspiring to hide the impending, massive outbreak of Mad Cow disease from the public.

What would happen to "Cattle Associations" were there a massive outbreak of Mad Cow disease?

Who are the "Cattle Associations", Bill?

Who are their members?

Who is doing what to whom, Bill?

Think about it.

BSE infections happen more often in Europe, instead of the US for good reason.
Prions show up more often in eyes, spines, intestines, brains(of course) and places we don't generally like to eat from as Americans. ie NOT a cut of muscle.

CJD/Crutzfeldt-jacob(not in the mood to look up the spelling) might be a different story, but experts are pretty clueless, and though it's a NASTY disease, it's pretty frickin rare. More rare than diseases you get from not cooking pork properly(trichinosis for example)

I don't make my career or living in the cow business, Larry.

My mom and dad do.

The ranch I grew up on (5th generation, 100+ sections) only produces enough income to support 1---maybe 2 families.

But believe it or not, we're an evil corporation.

I sit on the board.

We're required by law to have meetings---which occur at the breakfast table in the 80-year old adobe house I grew up in.

The only charts I recall are the annual rainfall bar graphs started by my great-grandfather---on a piece of posterboard tacked-up in our kitchen as they've been for decades.

Ok...it's "Creutzfeldt-jacob" and I did indeed butcher it.

We need to approach the possibility of contamination with a level head, education, and objectivity. The media has done a poor job of this since they can sell more advertising time with doomsday scenarios.

You're far more likely to get west nile, and even that is pretty hard to come by.

Thank God foxnews and CNN haven't heard of cancer, or they'd be telling us we'll all be dead of it in 2 years time. *sigh*

Me personally I eat most of My meat extra rare so I am not all that worried about getting sick. I believe alot of our problems today stem from the fact that there are way too many antibacterial agents on the market today. NOBODY has any immune systems anymore. If We curbed our use of these antibacterial soaps and cleansers we would all be a whole lot healthier in My opinion.

Larry Mohr

PS Fastest way to kill a septic system antibacterial soaps and cleansers.

I should correct that instead of all My Meat extra rare it should read BEEF/Bison.

So profit maximization is not the number one goal of corporations?

What world do you live in?

So tell me smart guy, just why were cattle to sick to walk hoisted with a forklift to be put into the slaughter? Rogue employees? Shits and giggles?

Your blind defense of corporate culture is sickening.
