Horse is amazing meat. We have it in Hungary at most butchers. It goes for a premium over beef. Incredibly tender and tasty. Makes beef filet taste like cardboard.

I also had a nice horse goulash made by an equestrian chick.

Hungarian have a long history of depending on horses and still have a close relationship with them. (Much more than in US history. They conquered the pannonia basin due to being able to ride and shoot arrows without sadles) But they have zero qualms about eating them.

Basic Hungarian insult is "lo fass" "horse dick".

To follow up I do not think horses should ever be raised as feed animals. But as anyone familiar with horses knows it is also incredibly cruel to let a horse die of old age. It would be an utter waste of food and energy to kill horses and then incinerate the carcases especially with all of the hunger and fuel shortages in the world. But horses being transported for slaughter should be dealt with humanely.

Please, horse, cow, pig, dog, what's the difference? If you're going to eat meat, don't pretend it makes a difference which ones it is.

I'd rather sent thousands of Mexicans to Mexico and keep the horses.

OK first of all there were no Violation of any kind in the IL horse tannery. Maybe in TX buit there were NO LEGAL PROBLEMS IN IL. The only reason it was closed was because some little, weak wristed, horse loving, do gooders who assumed they new best didint like the idea of slaughtering OLD horses for Dog chow, glue, whatever else. Jane fonda even came at spoke to the legislators. They did want old Flicka to be killed but, no one ever gave any other ideas on what to do with the OLD useless horses. Funny thing on this is a Local Horseman in IL got together about 50 trucks and loaded up 150 old decrepid, lame, useless horses and trucked them to Jane Fondas front door. SHe doesnt want them to be slaughtered then she should offer to take them all. There are still SOME great people in IL.

I got a question for those of you who actually know something about horses and cattle. I readily admit I don't know very much about them so....
are they very different in intelligence, is it less moral to slaughter cattle than horses???
I think we could all agree that if it is done it should be done humanely but is it wrong to slaughter horses for food but ok to slaughter cattle for the same reason?

It's actually "buenos dias," dia being of masculine gender (el dia). But this does go against the grammatic rule that words ending in "a" are generally of feminine gender.

I have defended Hilary when I thought the media was being unfair, I would happily vote for her but I also would be fine if Obama gets the nomination.

I am moderately ignorant toward the primary rules for both parties, but the Democratic party in particular.

Michigan and Florida wanted increased influence and thus moved their primaries forward. What I am having difficulty with is why? I ask that question in the context that the DNC flat-out told them if they did so, they'd be rendered virtually irrelevant.

Can you explain this process?


PS - on a side note, the irony of this whole situation is almost laughable. Given the tightness of the race, Michigan and Florida would have been far more influential had they just stuck with the original timeline.

The Florida Legislature added the date of the primary to the same bill that is supposed to create a paper trail for Florida elections. When the Dems were told by the party that our delegates would not be seated they tried to get the Republicans to change it to Super Tuesday but the Republicans refused. Can't blame it all on them though because it was a Democrat who originally added the changed date to the bill thinking that Florida could be more important in choosing the nominee. The whole thing is just a big stupid mess and I don't think anyone is surprised that Florida would be the state so completely screwed up. I didn't even bother to go vote in the primary.

One problem in assessing animal intelligence and putting it on a scale is that animals demonstrate different levels of interaction with humans, and then there's the usual variables like short-term memory vrs. long-term, and the ability to learn new tasks.

Cats are thought smarter than dogs, and do demonstrate more self-reliance and a better long-term memory. Dogs have a better short-term memory (about 1 minute duration) but in my experience repeating commands to a cat pretty much amounts to talking to the paw.

Cattle are not more intelligent than horses. Pigs rank higher than dogs, and chickens are thought be the dumbest critters in the barnyard.

The bottom line is that they are all sentient creatures, feel pain and fear, and if they are to be slaughtered should be afforded some compassion--which is notably absent in our mechanized slaughter houses.

Slaughter on the farm usually involves penning the animal, and shooting them with a 22 in the brain. Kosher requires a cutting of the throat which done properly causes little or no pain.

I'm starting to think I'm in the twilight zone. We can fight for abortion on demand at any stage of pregnancy(I am PRO CHOICE by the way), but we cant Fry or Hang convicted murderers(DNA evidence is at the point now were we can feel 100% certain of guilt), child molesters, or put down lame, decrepid horses. If the story about the IL plant is true (I have no reason to doubt that it is). Then this can be a lesson in un-intended consequences. People shut down the place because they did not want the horses to be killed. But when the horses are shipped to Mexico they suffer a worse fate.
