While arguing in court that states are free to enact tougher mercury controls from power plants, the Bush administration pressured dozens of states to accept a scheme that would let some plants evade cleaning up their pollution, government documents show. "EPA devoted enormous effort to preventing states from doing more," said Vickie Patton, a lawyer for Environmental Defense.

Ahh... the Bush out of Office countdown!

The countdown is ON!!

We should abolish the EPA and let companies clean up pollution on their own, just like they did before the EPA.

What's the problem with ingesting mercury? On warm days you feel up regardless, on cold days you feel down regardless.
It just sort of multiplies the effect.

Get used to it as eventually 10s of thousands of compact fluorescent bulbs will find their way to landfills.

Me, I live in Texas. I'd see red all summer!

You could launch a "Class Action" lawsuit against the EPA but the way it is in Washington, the EPA would then be given immunity by the US Congress just like the immunity the "Illegal Spying" Telecoms just got from Congress.

What it comes down to is that regular citizens have lost any rights to take on the criminal actions of Corporate America!

Well, yeah, Anticaddy; corporate America and "government" are pretty much interchangeable these days.

This won't end when G.W. gets out of office.

Some people are just too stupid thinking that the Democratic Party is going to save them.

Idiots!

Bill, The EPA levies fines to those who polute. Many times, it's cheaper to pay the fine than to clean up.

Fine job the EPA does, even under a Democratic President.

I say, get rid of the EPA and let the courts do the job.

Exactly,

The EPA hasn't cleaned up anything. Only allowed the Corporations to keep being dirty... for a price.

Mercury levels rising under BushCo's watch is a old topic, one that RFK Jr has spoken out on time and time again over the last five or six years. Too bad the MSM didn't find it sexy enuff to cover. Guess cos then they'd also hafta cover the fact that Dumbya has put lobbyists fer Big Oil and King Coal in high places in the EPA leading to such a loss of morale that the place has turned into a dispirited and gloomy joke where nothing good gets done. Pseudo stats get manufactured by pseudo scientists that try to purport how everything's getting better under Bush and proper scientists just do the *facepalm*.

They say people get the government they deserve.

Spud calls those people lying sacks of shiat.

Bush should be force-fed three eyed fish until he pukes.

Be Well.

I am government. I am here to help you...

"The EPA hasn't cleaned up anything. Only allowed the Corporations to keep being dirty... for a price."

That's total bullshit. The EPA is effective when the administration in power is committed to its mission. But if the Bush or any other administration undermines it, then of course it will be ineffective.

But hey, lets abolish the EPA and let the "free market" do what it did before the EPA, which is to encourage business to cut costs by dumping their garbage into our air and water.

"...Dumbya has put lobbyists fer Big Oil and King Coal in high places in the EPA leading to such a loss of morale that the place has turned into a dispirited and gloomy joke where nothing good gets done."

I'm not that privy to the inner workings of the EPA, but I've heard its always been like that. There's plenty of corporations out there run by democrats help by the EPA in the past as well. depends on who is president at the time.

I say, get rid of the EPA and let the courts do the job.

Took care of OJ real well.

For an individual to take on a corporation in court, the individual needs to be as wealthy as the corporation. If you get rid of the EPA, you also get rid of the standards that the corporations are supposedly breaking. You'd have to start from scratch every time regarding damage and long term effects.
And if you went through the courts, you Rightys would be whining about trial lawyers like John Edwards screwing with the beneficent corporation's love for America, so what you're really saying is let the corporations do what they want.

Looney,

I am not sure what your point is regarding the EPA - you'll have to expound upon it.

I know you are a Libertarian and I lean quite a bit in that direction when it comes to economics. Nevertheless, environmental issues generally fall outside the realm of free market economics as environmental concerns aren't tied to anyone's pocket-book.

In short, for all of its flaws, I see the EPA as providing a worthwhile function overall because consumer-driven market forces won't coerce waste-producing companies to dispose of said waste in a responsible manner.

The federal government is the largest polluter in our country. How can we entrust them to be good stewards of our environment?

"The federal government is the largest polluter in our country. "

Really? The federal governments emits more pollutants than the hundreds of thousands of companies across this country? Prove it.

Is this supposed to be news???

THis is old...

The rules started changing in 2000

No, the reason they aren't doing a good job is because they aren't given enough of your money. Then when they fuck up next time, they just weren't given enough money...so give them some more. They'll do a great job next time, I promise.

"Give them more of your money..."

...or clean house and hire some gals and guys who actually care about protecting the environment.

Scrumpet: I work on issues with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Most of the inspectors would love to do a better job and clean up the environment. The rules are made based on our elected officials and any standard has
to be approved by our elected officials. Any court case has to meet a set of criteria set by, you guessed it, our elected officials.
The mercury from coal fired generation is an example. Any polluter is only required to meet the standadards existing when the plant was built (In the 1960's people not falling dead outside the gate was concidered good enough, when performing upgrades that would increase output. As they replace/upgrade equipment, they aren't required to upgrade control equipment to the then current standards. Clinton EPA reduced the level of rebuilding required to kick in the higher control standards as if the facility were under a New Source Review (not merely a tune-up). Bush fought that, saying in effect, any rebuilt plant with two of its original bricks still together didn't have to upgrade emissions controls. I think they ststed that if the entire 1960s plant was rebuild 20% a year, it would only have to meet the 1960s standards. They lost in SCOTUS.

Cheney and bush are hypocrites! When they say they want to help, they only offer help to big industry. But the real puzzle is what happened to the Energy Task Force files? www.sourcewatch.org

I thought the EPA was really

Polluter

Agency

MSGT had a good thought up near the top. We are trading Mercury free incandesent Lights for High murcury compact florecence. With policies like that who needs a war to kill.
