If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing told a Swedish newspaper in an interview published Saturday. "They would murder him," Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Hillary?

Or the Islamist fanatics?

After all , he is an apostate in Muslim eyes, payable with death.

Or in the way.

No, just some fucked-up redneck Klan member, like you.

..or some hatefilled shitslinger like you,Jomama?

Obama should go hide in a bunker beneath the ground. That way, he has nothing to be afraid of. He can stay there for the rest of his life. I think everyone will be better off if he does that, even him.

Daily drudgers, drudge on:
drudgetracker.com

Who cares what this Limey thinks will be good for America!

Keep saying 'God save the queen', asshole.

BTW, Obama is not running as 'the black president'. He's running for president, and happens to be half black.

One more thing, there are TOO many sights out there calling for the assassination of Obama if he is elected. These people claim to be patriots but they have no comprehension of the idea. If he's elected, that will be the will of the majority of the people (except in Bush's case) and subverting that is the least patriotic thing one can do.

I despise Bush, but his assassination is the LAST thing i would ever want for this country. It undermines the whole democratic process. If you don't like the president, get off your ass and campaign for the guy you DO want.

JimmyL: Don't use comments to promote your site.

Don't be a little snit Rogers, you owe every spoon full of grits you wolf down to Matt Drudge.

BTW, very ungrateful of you to ban my ip after putting together such a kick ass cd for you a couple weeks ago.

I seem to remember getting lectured recently for even joking once about the death of a President. I would think that anyone discussing the death of a President should tread carefully.

It is not a topic to be taken lightly.

Regardless, there is always someone out there ready to crush our dreams. Every President is subject to assassination attempts... some more that others.

Let's get him elected and worry about that later!

Go Obama!

Don't be a little snit Rogers, you owe every spoon full of grits you wolf down to Matt Drudge.

What does that have to do with JimmyL?

BTW, very ungrateful of you to ban my ip after putting together such a kick ass cd for you a couple weeks ago.

Don't know what you're talking about here.

Good, I like you confused.

RCADE, is he making Mix Tapes for you? Sounds like someone has a crush on Rogers.

See rightwingers bash Clinton. See rightwingers blow up a federal bldg. then claim, "oh we had nothing to do with what this whack job does!" Even though we've been degrading the president every moment of everyday, damn near pleading with some jerk to make his play. I remember fat Limpdick, telling his listeners that he thought it was funny when he heard of nuts cheering, when the White House was blown up in the movie Independence Day. He said it was because people didn't like the president. I'll bet if that movie came out today, and someone cheered blowing up the WH, said person might be arrested in some of these backass southern states. Also,"hate radio", would make as big of deal of it,as they do the phoney left's war on Christmas.

when the White House was blown up in the movie Independence Day. He said it was because people didn't like the president.

What do you expect?

Bill Pullman is a lousy actor.

This has been said by myself and others. What he has done already is amazing and good for the country. But I find a sadness at the belief that their are who knows how many rabid racists. These "crackers" will not permit this black man to achieve office. That he is alive at this point is good. I would love to see a popular presidency from him if elected. I wish that all of the hate mongers die like road kill.

Now having said that, I feel that every candidate from every party sucks like a Hoover. Whatever the winner is, make them responsive to the people and the hardest task of all, reverse all of "Crotch Hairs" signing statements that cause the laws not to work.

MLK was famous for the "I have a dream" speech, I have a lesser goal. Make the next POTUS, one for the people. Some of you with that oft repeated 3rd grade education remember that it all started with "We the PEOPLE".

Call me as you wish, but the sound of that line makes a good sound to me. Let the next POTUS be a true "person" for the people. Forget political(sorry) partisanship. Make it all work for the good of those it can. The ones this system won't work for are the bottom feeders of DC. Let this species become extinct.

Wow! Was I ever dreaming. I just woke up to now, back to sleep.

Is their anyone here that was glad when Kennedy was assassinated? I'm very curious about this. If you were, tell us, and why.

Oh sure commenscents, Rogers and I have been a couple for years.

How old are you? I was in third grade. Glad? Are you fucking insane?

You don't have a shred of common sense.

Ah. "They would murder him"--she says--without specifics, of course.

This is the same senile old cow who said she "could kill George Bush", that the 9/11 attacks "were not that terrible", and advises us to vote for Hillary. Three reasons why the Nobel prize committee must've been having a crack dream that day.

She seems to have a fixation with the deaths of American presidents, though. That can't be healthy.

I won't be voting for Barack Obama, and would likely support very little of what he would be doing. But as an American, I would gladly kick the holy living hell out of any of "them" who would try to murder the freely elected president of my country. And there are 300 million Americans who feel similarly.

So the question is: how could a Nobel prize winner be so damn stupid? And given the awards handed out lately, is being retarded a prerequisite?

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where

But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he, to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on our way to there
Why not share

And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

and this is news because?

so every crackpot that claims he knows who will be murdered or who will die next gets 15 minutes?

I think the Michelin Man will die next. Someone with a big crochet needle...

I was born in 72.

Insane? No. But you seem to be lacking the knowledge that there are websites out there saying that Obamas assassination will a good thing if he is elected. I think these fuckheads are sick and i wanted to know if anyone here felt the same way these clowns do regarding JFK.

How does asking a legit question show a lack of common sense? Are you saying that there in nobody in America that wasn't glad it happened?

Anything else I can answer for you?

I gotta say, Common--I didn't really understand your question either. There's unfortunately no shortage of sick bastards in the world--people who would murder Obama or JFK or would prey on children or look at sick sh!t on the internet and get their rocks off. Fortunately such people are on the very far fringe, and no respectable people, right or left, want anything to do with them.

I'd be surprised were we to find anyone here who was happy JFK was killed, or that people are threatening Obama. And even if they did, hopefully they would be clever enough not to say so, and subject themselves to an immediate and well-deserved ass kicking.

I give you this commenscents, you may be young and dumb, but you're not stupid enough to engage me directly.

You're right, the question was poorly phrased.

I also certainly didn't expect anyone to chime in and say 'yes' and I'm glad nobody has, but hey, you never know.

I give you this commenscents, you may be young and dumb, but you're not stupid enough to engage me directly.

OK, I just went back and watched about 30 seconds of that awful video you linked and still have no clue what the hell it is you're talking about.

You made this claim:
"I give you this commenscents, you may be young and dumb, but you're not stupid enough to engage me directly".

I said I would engage you and asked what you had in mind.....

....and you come back with a music video and say I could be leader of some band?

You're right. I don't want to engage you directly as it's so confusing so far as to what the hell it is you mean. Can you be any more vague?

Don't know what you're talking about here.

Don't feel bad RCADE, see my above 'conversation' with him. I'm beyond confused too.

Apparently making no sense at all is the M.O. and then Asshummer says 'good'.

Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy. All the failed attempts such as Ford and Reagan. Maybe the lady has a point.

Doris Lessing is a very old lady with a vivid imagination who has clearly been prompted by the Clinton campaign to drop this bombshell on the world.

Duh.

Well Bush is still standing even with the 20 year (elected in the 2000 year that end in zero) curse.

No one can predict the future. This guy just wants to sell books! LOL!

If Bush can be protected then I know damn well Obama can. This is BS!

Some have ,it seems, a difficulty seeing the difference in the man Obama as a candidate. Thats a good sign. There are however those that see for them, the most heinous of crimes. There is without doubt black ancestry in him. For some this is so unacceptable as to be incompatible with life. Translation is easy, their are going to kill him. Or die trying. The second alternative being far better. Rabid racists are smaller in number than in the past but perhaps better able to carry out their nasty plans.

I like seeing both a man that is of other than Caucasian lineage. Likewise a woman in the presidential race. It show that we have grown, quite a bit in fact. If we can neutralize the scary, unpredictable element, we will have truly grown as a people.

Doris Lessing is full of shit. Some people overseas enjoy going on and on about the horrible racism that exists in the US when they live in relatively homogenous countries that are ten times more racist than we are. You would think a Nobel winner would be above such faux-inellectual endeavors. If we did elect Obama and some nut did attack him, the Euros would get off on it big time.

What a very unresponsible subject to post by this idiot. Every president has had attempts on his life some credible some not.

I seriously doubt that any of you Skol Bandit aficionados have ever read any of Ms. Lessing's works. Her books are dense, Euro-centric musings but leave you with a sense of what old post-Kafka European intellectualism was like.

So the question is: how could a Nobel prize winner be so damn stupid? And given the awards handed out lately, is being retarded a prerequisite?

Jimmy Carter deflection!

This has already been covered by www.guardian.co.ukSteve Bell

Doris Lessing is anything but an idiot. The Fifth Child was a great book, among many in her oeuvre and her opinion on Obama's fate is certainly as valid as any. It's an opinion, and because she's done some substantial things, it becomes news.

Do any of you think that there isn't a chance Obama would be assassinated if elected? Or, that the possibility of his assassination isn't greater than that of Hillary or McCain?

Or do you just want to rip a Brit for saying what you're probably thinking?

Or do you just want to rip a Brit for saying what you're probably thinking?

I think that the President of the US is always going to be the world's biggest target for assasination no matter who it is.

The creepiest thing about Lessings "opinion" is when she said, "They" would murder Obama without ever explaining who "they" was. As if there is some greater "they" that would be out to get Obama, or Hillary - or the hated by almost everyone current President.

There countless nutjobs out there and numerous "theys" who want to murder the President on any given day -- and if Obama became President the threat would be no more or less then any other President.

Frankly, given the power and symbolism of the US Presidency, I am amazed that more attempts have not been made on our Presidents (knock on wood)

There exists a knee jerk reflex on the part of many who live in the US to automatically sneer at anything a foreigner has to say about American life. It's alot like members of a family rushing to defend the child molester among them from an outsider, even though the outsider is merely pointing out the existence of a history of familial dysfunction.

FACT: There have been those in American political life who were assasinated. The ones that come to mind all offered something quite extraordinary and out of the status quo. Obama is as close to one of them as we've had in many a year.

"They" have killed all the populist leaders without ever getting their hands dirty.

Long live the Military Industrial Complex. Heil Darth Cheney.

I heard a well-known rapper being interview saying the same thing, that Obama would be assassinated because of the color of his skin. Now Reagan wasn't black, and he was shot while President. John Kennedy comes to mind as well, and he wasn't black either. Lincoln another President who was shot. He wasn't black either. Somehow I deem the "Obama" assassination theory as racist. It's like predicting 11 hurricanes in a year in advance because of global warming, and only 3 actually emerge the following year.

The influence of the label has sprung poor judgement of predicting someone's death if elected to the White House.

The FBI Deputizes Business
2/9/08

Today, more than 23,000 representatives of private industry are working quietly with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The members of this rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receive secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does--and, at least on one occasion, before elected officials. In return, they provide information to the government, which alarms the ACLU. But there may be more to it than that. One business executive, who showed me his InfraGard card, told me they have permission to "shoot to kill" in the event of martial law

www.progressive.org

InfraGard members receive "almost daily updates" on threats "emanating from both domestic sources and overseas," Hershman says.

"We get very easy access to secure information that only goes to InfraGard members," Schneck says. "People are happy to be in the know."

Well, Matthew Rothschild has certainly pointed out here one way for Obama to get JFKed here...:>/

"There exists a knee jerk reflex on the part of many who live in the US to automatically sneer at anything a foreigner has to say about American life."

This woman is not saying that as POTUS he'd be a target or even that as a black president he'd be a greater target. She's saying that he would definiteley be murdered shortly after taking office as if the onlslaught of racist Americans would be too much for the Secret Service to handle. The comment betrays a prejudice on her part.

If any response posted on this thread is "knee-jerk" it is your defense of this old crow's inane babblings. Read what she said and really think about it rather than assuming "Americans just don't like foreigners talking about them".

WHOA!!!

Sully: I've tried to read every article out there on what Lessing said in the interview she gave, but no article contains anything but snippets. How anyone can claim these are just babblings of an old lady is extrapolating from very little.

I happen to like the writer, and must give her credit for many amazing insights about how things operate in this day and age.

I defend her because so many are so quick to dismiss her as a nut, based on a couple quotes taken out of context. Maybe we'll get to read the entire interview soon, and draw more considered judgements after.

Bani: I'm curious, but you lost me.

If Barack Obama becomes the next US president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing told a Swedish newspaper in an interview published Saturday.

I have similar fears as do several of my friends, and I pray to God we're wrong. I don't think someone would try to kill him because he's black though but because he has the kind of charisma that will be threatening to some people. As for Lessing, she grew up in Africa and those early experiences may be overly coloring (no pun intended) her perspective:

In 1925, lured by the promise of getting rich through maize farming, the family moved to the British colony in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). . . . But like other women writers from southern Africa who did not graduate from high school (such as Olive Schreiner and Nadine Gordimer), Lessing made herself into a self-educated intellectual. . . . Lessing's fiction is deeply autobiographical, much of it emerging out of her experiences in Africa. Drawing upon her childhood memories and her serious engagement with politics and social concerns, Lessing has written about the clash of cultures, the gross injustices of racial inequality, the struggle among opposing elements within an individuals own personality, and the conflict between the individual conscience and the collective good. Her stories and novellas set in Africa, published during the fifties and early sixties, decry the dispossession of black Africans by white colonials, and expose the sterility of the white culture in southern Africa. In 1956, in response to Lessing's courageous outspokenness, she was declared a prohibited alien in both Southern Rhodesia and South Africa. . . . Also in 1995, she visited South Africa to see her daughter and grandchildren, and to promote her autobiography. It was her first visit since being forcibly removed in 1956 for her political views. Ironically, she is welcomed now as a writer acclaimed for the very topics for which she was banished 40 years ago.

www.dorislessing.org

I gotta admit, this was one of the first things that entered my mind when Obama announced his candidacy. I've even felt pangs of guilt that I might be aiding and abeting some bigoted nutcase if I voted for Obama.

I thought about the gut-wrenching pain we all felt when Kennedy was assassinated. I thought about the shock the country would have to go through again. I thought about his wife and children and how empty their lives would become.

There's no doubt in my mind that Obama is aware of what could happen to him. I've often wondered why he would subject his family to the possibility of such pain and heartbreak. I know I wouldn't do it.

Upseting the status quo of D.C. politics is a dangerous mission and, since we all know that Obama is not a stupid man, I think we have to surmise that he's a man of great courage and commitment. Deluded perhaps but courageous nonetheless.

If he becomes the next POTUS I think all we can do is cross our fingers and wish him luck.

"I've tried to read every article out there on what Lessing said in the interview she gave, but no article contains anything but snippets. How anyone can claim these are just babblings of an old lady is extrapolating from very little."

Because those two "snippets" are most likely the entirety of her published "wisdom" on this subject. The interview wasn't centered around her thoughts on Obama.

As for "how anyone could claim..."... She's making biased generalizations about a large group of people and she was obviously smart enough to know better at some point. She is an old lady and the comments are ludicrous so I don't know what else needs to be "extrapolated" before you think it is OK for me to say so.

She may have a point. Hope seems to be struck down in it's prime in the usa, evil lives on forever. Maybe it says more about us than anything else.

IRAN: DEATH PENALTY PROPOSED FOR APOSTATES'
But women who leave Islam would be subjected only to hardship' until they recant.

ISTANBUL, February 8 (Compass Direct News) The Iranian parliament may mandate the death penalty for citizens who leave Islam, a human rights group announced this week. For the first time in Iranian history, a proposed penal code demands the death penalty for "apostates," according to a February 5 statement by the Institute on Religion and Public Policy (IRPP). "Apostasy was always illegal, but the court could hand down a jail term, hard labor or the death penalty," said IRPP President Joseph Grieboski. "Now apostasy [would only] get the death penalty." Iran has used the "apostasy" law to target Muslim converts to Christianity, liberal thinkers and members of Iran's Baha'i religious minority. "This is not something new, they just want to be more harsh towards those who are leaving Islam," an Iranian pastor told Compass. Though sections of the draft appear to indicate that both men and women can be executed for apostasy, others limit execution to males who leave Islam. The proposed law stipulates that "hardship" will be exercised on a female "apostate," who will be immediately released if she recants.

'The dems'? You may want tobe just a little more focused....perhaps direct that at his constituents.

Al I can say is at least the dems try, something the repubs are proud to say they won't do.

Gal,

I agree. My fear for him is not based on his race, but on his charisma. A charismatic person attracts all kinds of people, even sociopaths. Both the good and evil flock to the charismatic person for the same reason, to feel part of something powerful. Most, thankfully, wish to enjoy that power, share it, and develop it--all that comes from being involved in something they can invest their hopes and dreams for themselves AND society.

For sociopaths their hopes and dreams can never extend beyond themselves. Their fascination with the charismatic person is figure out how to cash in on that power for themselves. Tragically, they sometimes do this through assasination and gain instant immortality by the act itself and instant gratification by the ability to exercise power over the emotional state of an entire nation.

Moreover all this recent applying of the term messiah to Obama makes me even more fearful for his life. It is a label one doesn't want ever attach to one's name. Messiahs don't fare well in our society. They rarely live to ripe old ages.

Cheers

If Doris Lessing is hoping this will become a self fulfilling prophesy why then didn't she also prophesize that Bush & Cheney will be in line for a similiar fate?

...and so it will begin-ARMAGEDDON. An Obama assassination would surely start the race war. Jesus would have to return earlier than he planned to put a stop to what he would see.

A white male who'll turn 78 in spring, my feminist credentials may be open to question. And if I accuse my sisters of being "vaginists" or "ovarists" in supporting the ex-first lady, my early (1970s) NOW days and my decade as a clinic escort will surely be forgotten.

It's sad that in the eighth year of America's certifiably ugliest-ever presidency a white woman and a black male must vie to be first of their species to reign. Both are eminently qualified. I harbor hopes of both their names being on next November's Democratic ticket.

To me it's not about the shape of the genitalia or the quantity of melanin in the skin.

It's first, unfortunately, about who is surest to dethrone the Nixon-Reagan-Bush-McCain axis. The very survival of humanity is tied to that. And Ms. Hillary has baggage, a built-in enmity. Rightly or wrongly, too many Americans will not vote for her.

Some of their reasons, frankly, suck. She's "too uppity." She "tolerated Bill's foibles." Others are grounded in reality. She did lead the Wellesley Young Republicans. She sold out on welfare and health. A few are on solid ground. She did back Bush's war. She opposes leaving now. The corporate boardrooms, the Murdoch money, going to her do constitute a red flag.

I abhor the personal, vitriolic, hate-filled attacks on Hillary Clinton. I see her as a significant figure in American history deserving a place along Dolley Madison and Eleanor Roosevelt.

But a spammer asks "are we as women still second class citizens? What more do we have to do?" I don't think it's a gender-related putdown. to note that I voted for a Barack Obama who revives stirrings of pride I haven't felt since '63. Since then I've experienced eight presidents with bare tolerance to physical loathing. All spawned embarrassment before the world.

Obama makes me feel upbeat. This is not starry-eyed infatuation. He does not always speak for me. He walks the walk, but "The Audacity of Hope" does not talk the talk. His "Big Tent" would include those who would stand me against a wall. I'm uncomfortable with that.

Barack Obama brings American political life a new brand of idealism, an intellect unseen in public life since Adlai Stevenson, a sense that we needn't apologize to the world for the White House mediocrities this nation has experienced since the day the music died in Dallas.

It's not about age vs. youth, double standards or which brand of slavery is worse. This is not woman-hating, not irrational Hillary hating. (I think she deserves a statue.) I detest the "sick, malicious" humor. I have high regard for Chisholm, Schroeder and, for that matter. I am not condescending in trying to enunciate both understanding and sympathy for the bitterness over injustices which are still not entirely relegated to history.

I wish Super Tuesday had come a few weeks later, adding momentum to the steamroller/bandwagon. I support Obama not because I'm male or female, black or white, but because I'm a citizen of the earth who cares about his grandchildren. - herm
