Keep in mind, No X-Box, No Cable, No I-Pods, No $300.00 Phones. Hamhocks and beans at least twice a month. We buy generic whenever possible and don't shop at Higher end grocery stores.

My brother was actually not to keen on voting, but my nephew for some reason was so excited about the whole election thing so my brother took him to experience the whole proces. There's also the issue of closed versus open primaries. Where one political party has electoral dominance in a local jurisdiction it makes sense to register in the dominant party in order to have a say in who will be the nominee (and likely winner).

For most of the 20th century that was the driving motivation for the dominance of the Democratic Party in Florida. Only after the GOP began winning local, county and Congressional elections did counties such as Polk turn red.

You need to go back to the 1968 DNC convention. With the assasination of RFK, and the violence outside of the convention in Chicago, the Democratic "bosses" decided to give the nomination to Hubert Humphrey.

Fast-forward a few years and the reforms within the Democratic Party paved the way for the primaries and caucuses to be supreme for choosing the nominee.

And the result? McGovern.

Following the 1972 convention, and the 1976 election, the Democratic Party decided that it wanted to "temper" the primaries and caucuses and introduced the "superdelegates."

Right or wrong, that's the story of the superdelegates.
