Anyone got any special concoctions that come out for the Super Bowl? My personal favorite is the fruit salad soaked in moonshine that someone picks up in a trip down to Kentucky at some point during the year.


Oh, and I'll take Pats -12 all day.

For the first year ever my wife and I will be going for different teams.

I hope our marriage survives.

What a great bachanial winter time holiday this Super Bowl has become. I dont give a ratsrump who wins, but we will most of us enjoy this day as a mini Thanksgiving day with food, libations and friends and family.

Thanks for the sentiment. I think Spud is disappointed in some of the people here, and it's probably my fault. Its hard to find out that some people you liked and respected have harsh things to say about you when your back is turned. I think Spud will be back when he realises that the only opinion that matters is his own.

i live on the phoenix/scottsdale border and have been watching the nfl media blitz all week. cavalcades of cars and vans with escorts and blimps over the nicer parts of town. tis been quite something.
i was out and about this morning about 7 and twas indeed nippy and cloudy... even got a bit of a drizzle. a hi of about 62 is expected and the showers are threatening. this is not what the nfl wanted, i am sure.
we get sunshine 360 days of the year... only when there's a golf or tennis tournament does it rain... and of course the superbowl this time. i guess that is why they put a lid on the eyesore that is the bidwell palace.

Vegas doesn't care who wins. They adjust the line to reflect the amount of money bet on both teams and take their 10%. They stop taking bets on the favorite or underdog until they can adjust the line if things look like they might get unbalanced. They will usually make somewhere between 9% and 11% profit. I hate the Patriots more than any team ever assembled, so this was, for me, a wonderful day. Which followed about 120 very awful days where I had to watch them win, and win, and win. And thank God they didn't have to play the Cowboys in the big game--I probably would've just had to kill myself.

And, since I'm the unapologetic capitalist pig on the DR, whenever the NFC wins the Super Bowl, it's good for markets.

Also, I don't want to be indelicate, but what's the deal with these 65 year-old rockers? Godalmighty. I'd rather just have a national competition of high school bands, with the winner playing the Super Bowl crowd. The Rolling Stones were a disaster--they sucked, as always--and Tom Petty was the most uninspiring "artist" I've ever seen. Janet Jackson sucked too, but at least made things interesting in the end.

The reports are that the Super Bowl is in contract talkes with Coltrane and Foreigner for next year's show. Which means that the suckiness will continue.

It's yet another predictable dichotomy during the Super Bowl: (paid) twentysomethings running out, worshiping (on cue) music they've rarely heard before.

TH, I'm a Tampa fan. And I thought the way THEY ended their season was a disgrace. You're paid to play 16 games, then the playoffs. NOT to sit your starters on their ass the last three games, afraid that they might be injured or hurt. Stupid. Tampa was the favorite going into the first playoff game, at home, against NY--and I knew they were going to lose. KNEW it.

I was actually pulling for Green Bay against the Giants last week, because I thought GB would've had a better shot against the demonic, Satan-worshipping, infant-sacrificing, detestable scum-sucking New England Patriots. Then when GB lost, I became the world's number one Giants fan.

Now, I can go back to being me.

Since Thanksgiving the Giants were the best team in Football. If anyone was crazy enough to listen to the idiots from Fox, Nbc, Cnn,Espn or the Football network the Patriots were never to lose. These people know no more more than you or me experts my ASS. The best team ever what crap!!!

After Thanksgiving, I some small time fool from Northern California knew that the Giants were going to win, where were these experts, what a joke.....

This is twice now that ESPN has done pretend games between a current team going into a championship vs. great teams from the past. My favorite commericial tonight wasn't really a commercial at all... it was when they were saying who the game was sponsored by and a Terminator robot busted through and wrecked that retarded football robot... that one had me laughing.

Watched the game on FOX en espaol...which was nice, because it muted the tension--to a point. Then NY in their final drive...we'd all been saying, just give us a chance to win with 2 minutes left. Which is exactly what we got. Tyree's catch--sort of makes "the catch" look like some easy shit. This was more on the lines of "the immaculate reception." Crikey. And then Plaxico so alone that every NYer must have been thinking, "don't drop it!" He didn't. GMEN win! Rioting in the streets of NYC, and on the trails of Costa...

I worked on that project for a very short period of time before returning to my main project... must have really struck a chord with you for you to remember it because I barely do...

And the jammers work great tough guy... if you really knew anything about them, you would know that the word "Improvised" is more important then "explosive." Regarding Fox Sports production values:

Why did the audio technician keep the level of the crowd at the same level as the two announcers? I could barely hear about a tenth of their blather. Did a consultant tell them loud crowd noise motivates 18-49 year old female viewers to go shopping? Or is it the result of Fox hiring a free-lancing college kid run audio to save money?

This was the first game I watched a game all season. Is this audio problem a trend? I know these announcers are in a nearly soundproof booth so the audio mix has to be deliberate.

Did anyone else notice this or are my late middle age ears underperforming?

I lived, for a time, about a half mile from Foxboro Stadium (I can't keep up with all the name changes for stadiums) and, therefor, was hoping for a Patriots win this year.

That said, the Giants played one hell of a game and are to be congratulated for it. Additionally, the Pats got cocky, and it cost them. While they played a fairly good game, it wasn't their best and they tried to do some really stupid things, like go for a touchdown when they were about 20 yards out, fourth down, where already ahead and could have made the field goal in their sleep.

"I'll be shocked if New England keeps Moss. After this year he deserves a big payday, but the Patriots aren't known for paying receivers that type of money (See Deion Branch)... I'd like to think my Eagles would come in and get him like they did with Owens, but that would be smart so they won't."

In light of the above commentary, so this particular assemblage of players the Giants team won the superbowl. Okay... This is really the third time that NY Giants, Inc., has won a superbowl. In the coming year, some players will go, some other players will join up. It will not be the same team, just the same corporation.

Now if the exact set of players were to remain and kick ass for the next couple of years, that would be something.

It's nothing more than a money thing and who can buy the best talent from whoever/wherever.

2. calling a sellout blitz on the giants last play from the 13... all they needed to do was prevent a touchdown but instead they blitz 8 men and leave a 5'7" cornerback to defend against a 6'5" reciever... another terrible choice

I just got done watching most of what Sportscenter had to offer while at lunch...

They are doing their damnedest to make sure no blame goes on Brady or the offense... What the fuck? Brady had an awful game... He was missing wide open receivers left and right. How about that 4th and 13 play, where instead of trying for a first down he bombed it out of the endzone where no one even had a chance to make a play on it!

They're actually saying it was the defense that was the problem because they are old. And after 18 games they just broke down. Are you kidding me? The Pats' offense is without question one of the greatest ever... they scored on their first possesion and their last, and that's it.

The old saying "Defense wins championships" only rings true if your offense scores points.

He did... but there was one play left in the game. I don't know, it really doesn't mean anything, but leaving the field while the game was still going and his players were still on the field seemed odd to me.

What about eschewing a 49 yard field goal try to instead go for it on 4th and 13 (not to mention then throwin it out of bounds where no one can catch it, even though an interception would probably be better than an incomplete)? They lost by 3, and I think Belichik's decision deserves scrutiny.

Think he'll be back next year? He doesn't really play much of a dominant role anymore (especially not compared to his first couple seasons) and Boss seems to be pretty good and probably cheaper.

that was the odd part to me too... Okay fine, its still somewhat early and your the patriots... I can't fault him too much for going for it, but Brady just hucking it out of the corner of the endzone was really strange. Especially since they couldn't stop Welker all game... speaking of throwing it out of bounds and I havent heard anyone speak of this but what about when the Pats were deep in their own end, after the false start penalty, brady drops back, kiwenewka blitzs and brady just heaves it to the side and no intentional grounding? The receivers were obviously running fly patterns, no Pat was within 20 yards of the ball, he was in the pocket and obviously avoiding a sack? the announcers didnt comment on it and I havent heard anyone talk about it.

Brands want to be associated with teams, not the other way around.

When Nike sponsors Organ, Ole Miss, Alabama, Miami...football programs (or have you abandoned uber-endorced college football too?)it does so to gain exposure. It is the corporate interests that hitch their wagons to sports teams. The major players in sport's advertising (beer, shoes, electronics...) are hoping that our love of the Cowpokes, Cubs, Cavaliers, or Kopites translates into sales dollars. But the team remain the star, it's sponsors follow along as the goldbricking entourage.

Personally I relish the relationship brands have with teams/leagues. I buy Heineken mini kegs over my beer of preference (Amstel Light) strictly because they are the primary sponsor to Champions League TV in the US. They support what I want, I support them. Likewise there are no, a will never be any, RCA or Gillette products in my home.

p.s. I also haven't eaten at subway since Jared the fat-fuck Retard became their pitchman.

Family traditions centered around going to/watching games. Seeing alot of the same people at the games year after year. Watching the game and knowing how certain family members/friends are reacting to certain plays even though they are not with you. Lots of memories. The atmosphere when the local team is in the big game. Seeing people today with a smile on their face and them seeing yours and both of you understanding why without saying anything. The weather is crap today and everyone is still happy. Being a fan of a team is largely about the shared experience with other fans..... Your ignorance to these things doesn't make you right. It just makes you ignorant.

And in the particular case of the Giants, any fan of the team will tell you they played traditional Giants Football last night: Great defense, low-risk ball control offense. Other teams have different formulas, this has been the Giants' style for years. The players change but the gameplan remains the same.

And your point that the players change every year is overplayed. 90% (or more) of the Giants will be back next year. Of course they aren't the same team that won it 17 years ago. NFL careers are short. That was assinine point to make.

The guy finished 29 of 48, had more passing yards than Eli, no interceptions (to be fair, Eli didn't really either), and spent most of the game on his back. He simply didn't have time to do very much, but still was able to drive his team the length of the field to put his team ahead with two minutes to go.

I can't stand the Patriots, and Brady and Moss least of all. But any rational assessment of the game has to include the fact that Brady had a solid, though not spectacular, game. Any other QB in the league playing for NE last night--including Manning--and it's a three-TD New York win.

Thought it was poetic justice, too, that Plaxico Burress made his big sideline catch after an obvious push-off on his defender, which was a bread-and-butter play for all the Patriots' receivers this year. What goes around . . .

I thought he was OK. He was on his ass after every other pass play and he looked bleary eyed starting halfway through the 3rd quarter. He did have a higher completion percentage and more yards than Eli, but in many more attempts. Eli had him in yards per attempt and touchdowns (I don't even count that interception as his fault). Brady's long passes were way off all game. I think the worst you can say is he played decent but not spectacularly. Factor in that the Pats couldn't pass block or run the ball and he probably deserves more credit than he's getting.

That was long time Giant Amani Toomer. They ended up wasting that play and coming up empty on that drive anyway. I did thoroughly enjoy it at the time, however.

Ah. You're right. The Burress play was what I thought at the time was an obvious fumble. After making the catch he clearly had both feet down when the ball came loose.

All good, though :) God watches football, sometimes. And last night, He sure didn't do it for the ads. They were awful.
