This is the most inane thing I have ever heard. Whales live by sonar, their entire existance is sonar, and we fucking humans are doing our best to fuck it up... great., it is moments like this that I wish upon wish that the premise of Star Trek was true, the only way we can save the world is to save the whales. As an old pal of mine, long past, used to say, fuck a bunch of mother fuckers.

The judge said that the Navy's own assessments predicted that dozens of marine mammals, particularly deep-diving whales, could be harmed by the intense sound waves. dozens? could be harmed? Geez, by these posts I thought all of them were going to be shot. LOL

Sorry, I'm not a big fan of the "administration", but I gotta give this one to them, sort of. Seems there talking 2 different things in the article. In one instance they speak of not limiting certain types of Sonar, which I can agree with. 2nd part of the article seems to deal with a geographic limitation, I don't really see why that should be an issue.

WELL...i want to give our navy the tools they need to protect themselves and their ship....sonar has been around for along time now...i doubt it plays as big of a roll as some might think....our navy is always on the move and so are the whales...i doubt any of them stay in one place too long....its a big ocean out there

We need to develop a newer technology that can allow subs to navigate without relying on sound.

We need to develop a newer technology that can allow subs to navigate without relying on sound. Posted by Apocalypto Yeah. I agree. What about making submarines with a sense of smell. Maybe they can be programmed to smell other ships. Imagine the anti-detection techniques. Artificial farts, raw eggs, ... Okay. It's late. I'll go to bed now.

from the article - Last August, the Natural Resources Defense Council persuaded a federal judge in Los Angeles to order a stop to Navy training exercises off Southern California using medium-range sonar. The judge said that the Navy's own assessments predicted that dozens of marine mammals, particularly deep-diving whales, could be harmed by the intense sound waves.... I agree with giving the Navy what they need to conduct their training exercises but sure would like to get a guarantee from the Navy that they would go out of their way to try and avoid any run-ins with migrating whales. One of the most beautiful sights is going off the coast of Southern California in one of those whale watching boats and seeing these majestic whales rise up out of the ocean as they migrate their way south every year along our coastline. If you're ever out this way your should make reservations for one of the whale watching trips. You won't be sorry.

If the Navy is exempt, who is the law aimed at? I was a Sonar Tech in the Navy and trust me, NOBODY has more powerful sonar than the Navy. All others are just sounding sonars for depth or high frequency sonar for short range bottom scanning (research) and this is not what harms the whales. It's the ultra low frequecny longer range sonar that does the damage.

Why can we just not "Harvest" them? You know, EAT THEM? Look at it this way: no whales, no problem. But then the tree huggers would just whine about something else. By the way, if life is so precious to them,(tree huggers) why is it they do not mind killing "less desirable" life forms? Say for instance, roaches, mosquitoes, or rats? It seems like if an animal qualifies as "pet" material, it is held in a higher esteem than life that isn't pet material. Who are we to make that call, and just think of what we use as a standard. (And since we are related, Mammals are excluded) Ah the hypocrisy of it all: man saying "you can live due to how we feel about you, and you cannot because you are disgusting." Pass the Baleen Please.

Active sonar is very seldom used, particularly by submarines. Once a vessel has "pinged" with active sonar, it has given away its position and classification. I suspect, like a lot of other things, it's all a small problem that people with a lot of time on their hands want to exploit.

Lordy, lordy....this is beginning to remind me of the cougar attack killing a woman jogger in CA some time back. Our little friends of the animals back there collected something like $100,000 to care for the cougar's cubs after it was hunted and killed. Nothing for the woman's small kids though. Maybe...I say MAYBE, a whale is damaged by active once in a while. BUT, I bet it's nowhere near the damage done to whales by propellers of large ships and such. I KNOW it's nowhere near the damage done by the Japanese, Eskimos and others who hunt them. Maybe we should just prohibit people from ANY use of the seas???? Personally, I'd like to see a movement to ban cars, trucks, buses etc. that are killing 'possums all over the U.S.

Active sonar is needed in order to detect the new diesel subs everyone is getting. If you think that savig a few whales is worth a couple of US subs getting a torpedo up the backside by a PLAN sub then by all means blame Bush and hug a whale.

To answer your question, Jest, I am not that concerned about possums and coons nor squirrels, deer, ducks or doves. I am also not anti-hunting in the least, with the exception of African trophy, which I think has something to do with white guys having small penises. I do, however, think animals as magnificent as whales deserve not to be hounded out of the ocean by man's search for better killing machines.

This doesn't even come close to rating with Bush's more destructive policies. At least he's being straightfoward about this. Unlike others, he's not talking about intentionally killing whales under the guise of "research" or anything.

There are plenty of studies to suggest that cell phone towers, microwave emitters, and airborne radar reak havoc on all kinds of migratory birds. But I don't see a lot of liberals running around asking the government to ground all aircraft, turn off all the radars, and shut down the portable phones and devices industry. Hmmmm. Whole lot more birds in the world than there are whales. Wonder why the libs get so exercised about Navy sonar, but not civilian radar, and cell phones? Could it be that--yet again--the extent of their environmental "concern" and "awareness" ends at the point they have to change THEIR lifestyle?

Sure. So can you. I know you have at least one Google search saved, something like "Arhenius Global Warming". Just change it to "Cell phone towers kill birds" or something similar. Not that it'll matter. DR libs want our subs to turn off their sonar, but not even the Earth First! types are willing to give up their cell phones. Typical.

Given the fact that two Iranians in a dingy caused the Navy to piss itself, maybe they shouldn't fuck with the whales. Remember what happened to the Pequod.

On topic, since it is only a few dozen whales, and these are training exercises, you would think that the Navy wouldn't mind going passive for a few minutes if there are whales around. After all, it's not like they won't spot them or hear them in the first place.
