Democrat John Edwards on Sunday waded into a dispute between his rivals, criticizing comments by Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband that some have considered disparaging to Barack Obama and black people generally. "I must say I was troubled recently to see a suggestion that real change that came not through the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King but through a Washington politician. I fundamentally disagree with that," Edwards told more than 200 people gathered at a predominantly black Baptist church.

If I remember much about the civil rights movement, most of the democrats were against it. It was the republicans in congress that realy pushed it through for LBJ to sign.

Next stop for Edwards -- to his hairdresser to get an afro.

FF for Bowa!

Cost--$500.00!!!!

Murphy

I watched her this morning on Meet the Depressed.

Spin Spin Spin and she is setting this up for her to be the candidate and Obama to be the VP...

You read it here first on the DR.

Murphy

She's made her case to the people...only problem is that most of them weren't paying attention beyond the staged soundbites.....

Hillary is running a campaign based on Nixon's southern strategy.

The Clinton's are showing their true colors

We can't trust the Clintons any farther than we can throw them, which is not very far at all. Bill's Presidency is proof of that!

Democrats discriminate than any other party I know.
All this diversity and equality shit is fake and does not work

They are so worried about equality better yet they have black caucases. Black entertainmnment Television, JET magazine, Ebony.

What would happen if there was a white entertainment TV. White magazine.

These IDOTS I MEAN IDIOTS are tooo stupid...to support a candidate

I honestly don't see what the problem here is. This is a Presidential election, it's wholly appropriate to talk about a President's role. MLK was a great civil rights leader, but if the President had been Strom Thurmond, things would have played out very differently.

LBJ - and the Republican Congress - took some bold positions and backed them up. They should get credit for what they did, and it should be seen as an example of government taking a stand to protect the rights of the American people.

Here is what I find confusing: the Clintons start this "race war" and then get pissy when they are called out on it.

I can totally understand why they went the route they did, but if you take that route you have to own up to it. To say that Obama started this is rather disingenuous.

"If I remember much about the civil rights movement, most of the democrats were against it. It was the republicans in congress that realy pushed it through for LBJ to sign."

But then you leave out the best part of the story, the part where the southern Democrats, incensed at the passage of the civil rights bill, quit the Democratic Party and became Republicans which they continue to be today. The famous "southern strategy" used by Republicans since Nixon was based on those formerly Democratic voters who left the party because of its goal of racial equality.

Danni spins a big one, "But then you leave out the best part of the story, the part where the southern Democrats, incensed at the passage of the civil rights bill, quit the Democratic Party and became Republicans which they continue to be today."

Wow! This makes so much sense! Democratics, in charge of Congress, block the civil rights bill. Republicans rally behind the civil rights bill and help Johnson pass it (Kennedy's legacy/dream).

So, naturally, the racist Democratics flock to the civil rights supporting Republicans!

When a leftist lies -- it's a "Big" one!

"The famous "southern strategy" used by Republicans since Nixon was based on those formerly Democratic voters who left the party because of its goal of racial equality."

BS! What ex-Democratics are now Republicans in such vast numbers? What is this vague "Southern Strategy" that you infer has become a racist Republican policy?

What a petty little liar you happen to be, Danni ... always a Big one, too ...

"Achtung! You will get along if you just believe Danni!"

"What is this vague "Southern Strategy" that you infer has become a racist Republican policy?"

In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to the focus of the Republican party on winning U.S. Presidential elections by securing the electoral votes of the U.S. Southern states, often by exploiting racial anxiety among white voters.

Although the phrase "Southern strategy" is often attributed to Richard Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips, he did not originate it, but merely popularized it. In an interview included in a 1970 New York Times article, he touched on its essence:
From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats."
Source
So much for "vague."

Hans

Danni has to admit, "Southern strategy refers to the focus of the Republican party on winning U.S. Presidential elections by securing the electoral votes of the U.S. Southern states, often by exploiting racial anxiety among white voters."

Unreal! The Republican policy is to SUPPORT THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT against concerted Democratic attempts to block CIVIL RIGHTS ... and the NYTimes calls it, 'preying on the racial fears of white voters!' and as if we had made them into Democratics who were racial bigots and had blocked civil rights!

If some "strategist" acknowledges that because of Democratic racial bigotry, Republicans would gains advantage, it is immediately spun into Republicans being callously bigotted racially, too and that the racists are voting for them ... when that is patently false!

Every Democratic bigot governor was elected in the South! Wallace a prime example!

Needless to say that the image of a Republican as a racist is one of the Democratic's BIG FAT LIES!!!

Scum liars and becoming just too obvious with this election and the lies told up to now, along with the subversion to gain political advantage by fighting the success of the war in Iraq!

Makes me gag ...!!!.

She is not too subtly playing the race card. She knows it is a powerful card when conversing with whites.

Makes me gag ...!!!.

You are the gag.

"What a petty little liar you happen to be, Danni ... always a Big one, too ..."

Quite simply you are full of shit. Nixon invented the "southern strategy" and any idiot knows that. It has been used since to take advantage of white southern resentment about civil rights which has been the strategy that has enabled the Republicans to elect presidents. Without racism we would not have had very many Republicans in the WH. duh!!!!!

""Wallace a prime example!""...who ran as a third party candidate for president....duh!!! really stupid example.

Danni continues the fib, "... Nixon invented the "southern strategy" and any idiot knows that."

From you own quote, above: "Although the phrase "Southern strategy" is often attributed to Richard Nixon strategist Kevin Phillips, he did not originate it ..."

The term was invented by the media to blame Republicans for the effect that the Civil Rights act had on Southern Democratics WHO HAD FOUGHT IT! Those Democratics did not start voting for Republicans, but voted for racist Democratics who ran for office, against civil rights supporting Democratics! George C. Wallace is the perfect example ...

... Meanwhile those same racist Democratics were voting to send fellow racists to Washington -- Robert Byrde a PRIME EXAMPE AND STILL BEING ELECTED!

"It has been used since to take advantage of white southern resentment about civil rights which has been the strategy that has enabled the Republicans to elect presidents."

You get people to believe the Big Lie by repeating it over-and-over, ad nauseam. There was no STRATEGY! It was a recognition that Democratic racists would not be voting for "official" Democratic civil rights supporters ... not that those Southern Democratics would *suddenly* start voting for Republican civil rights supporters!

You prey on people's ignorance in repeating these partisan lies, Danni -- you take them for fools who haven't the smarts to undnerstand that Southern Democratics DID NOT START VOTING FOR REPUBLICANS in the South. It is a lie spun to try and hold Republicans up as racists ... *instead of the racist Democratics who voted AGAINST the civil rights bills, acts and rules!!!

Danni tries a stupid lie, "'Wallace a prime example!'...who ran as a third party candidate for president....duh!!! really stupid example."

See???? You even ADMIT IT! Those Southern Democratic bigots didn't vote for Republicans --- they voted for George C. Wallace, Sr., Democratic bigot who ran independently!

No "STRATEGY" of racial prejudice from Republicans, but the same old, tired racism of Southern Democratics!!!

Say, aren't you one of them!?!

Tadowe your attempt to spin the facts is just laughable. Don't blame me for the racism which powered the Republicans to victory in so many elections. Pretending that racism isn't the basis for Nixon's "southern strategy" just makes you look either dishonest or stupid, you choose which.

Danni says, "Tadowe your attempt to spin the facts is just laughable."

The funny (weird and sick) part is that the nation saw millions of Democratics display their racial bigottry and the refusal of the Democratically controlled Congress to pass a Civil Rights Act!

How to escape the sure and certain future where the Democratic party is known as a pack/gang of racially prejudiced idiots?

*BLAME IT ON THE REPUBLICANS!!!*

Make them into the party of racial bigottry, even though they had voted for the Civil Rights Act and made it into a reality -- a fact the Democratic bigots had fought so long!!!

So, the "liberal" media started a campaign to make the Republicans into bigots and racists -- by claiming without a shred of evidence that Southern Democratics joined the Republican party and made them into the party of racial prejudice!!!

You lying, filthy scum buckets of politics!!!

David Ernest Duke (born July 1, 1950) is a former Republican member of the Louisiana House of Representatives

Hmm isn't it pretty obvious where the racism lies. Keep trying to lie Tadowe.

Byrdman squawks, "Hmm isn't it pretty obvious where the racism lies. Keep trying to lie Tadowe."

1989? That's how long it took to actually get an ex-Democratic to run as a Republican on a racist platform? And, Duke beats out a civil rights Republican?

It is obvious where the racism lies in the South, and has since the "carpetbagging" Republicans came to "rebuild" those states -- in the Democratic party.

The effort to blame Republican "Southern strategy" as racial intolerance is a stupid lie, and has been since it was started right after the Civil Rights Act was signed into law. All such racial intolerance has been, and still remains the exclusive perview of Southern Democratics, and who continue to vote racists like Byrde into office as Democratics ...

Try to convince everyone that it is Republicans voting to put Byrde back into office, year-after-year ...

" you go girl " , seeding the audience with rap-trap bullshit spewers , and now the same old -same old , " no womenz be illegal " as the marxist bitch spews her placating pandering nonsense . The Clintons are not racists, IMHO. They are, however, so power-hungry that they will resort to race baiting if it will help get them back in the White House. All of this "code language" used recently is about as coincidental as the "Iron My Shirt!!!" incident a few days ago.

I worked with a group of union craftsmen for about three years in the early 1990s -- all Democrats, all union members. If there is a more overtly racist/sexist/homophobic group anywhere, I've never encountered them. The holier-than-thou attitude many Democrats have when it comes to "race" is absolutely not deserved. The Clintons know this and they will use it as a wedge issue to get the nomination.

Oh, and to be clear, Republicans suck.

"Oh, and to be clear, Republicans suck."

Translation: Look! Even though I recognized that it is Democratics who are often the worst bigots and racists ... I'm still a loyal goosestepping member of the gang ... so don't go off on me, pretty please? See? I've exposed a Republican collective throat and torn it out ... that's enough for forgiveness, right?

Lott was among those who urged Reagan to deliver his first major campaign speech in Philadelphia, Mississippi, where three civil rights workers were murdered in one of the 1960s' ugliest cases of racist violence. It was a ringing declaration of his support for "states' rights" -- a code word for resistance to black advances clearly understood by white Southern voters.

Republican = racist

Don't you think it is denigrating for BillC to call Barak a kid? He may as well have called him boy!
He is a full grown man ...not a KID!

It's really simple:

1. Hillary made a very silly comparison between MLK and LBJ. MLK had the dream, LBJ got it done.

2. This is immediately perceived by some of the media as a veiled racial insult, both to MLK, and by implication, Obama.

3. Obama himself does not respond to it.

4. The Clinton campaign starts a complaint that the Obama campaign is insinuating they made a racial insult when they, of course didn't.

5. The story becomes "Obama accuses Clinton of racial remarks"

6. Obama says how can this be my doing when it's entirely based on something she said, not what I said?

Conclusions:

1.The Clinton campaign is scared.

2. Bill Clinton is beginning to understand his time has come and gone.

BRAZILE: "I think his tone, I think calling Barack Obama a "kid," he's a United States Senator, he's experienced, the people of Illinois elected him, and regardless of what kind of items on his resume, this is a man who has worked all his life. ... I think, for Bill Clinton to go out of his way to become a distraction to Hillary Clinton, and to launch the kind of attacks on Obama is just out of character for Bill Clinton."

It is a big mistake to believe a Clinton cares about anything or anybody other than the Clinton's.

"As evidence the Obama campaign had pushed the story, Clinton advisers pointed to a memo written by an Obama staffer compiling examples of comments by Clinton and her surrogates that could be construed as racially insensitive. The memo later surfaced on some political Web sites.

"This is an unfortunate story line the Obama campaign has pushed very successfully," the former first lady said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." "I don't think this campaign is about gender, and I sure hope it's not about race."

news.yahoo.com

Oh those darn facts again!

Why do we need them anyway, eh?

"racially insensitive"

You bet your ass it was! The facts are there for anyone to read. Deny it all you want.
The Clinton's have only played on black people for votes ,personal power, and their own political gain.

Wait, the Clintons and their supporters bring up the race issue and it's Obama's fault for calling them on it?

Typical slimeball Clinton politics.

Even a Clinton crony like Brazile see's it.

BLITZER: But tell me why, as an African-American, Donna, you feel that the President's comments weren't appropriate?

BRAZILE: Well, first of all, if Bill Bennett had said some of the things Bill Clinton is saying about Barack Obama, I would have called Bill Bennett out of his name and said that Bill Bennett should shut his mouth because he is not speaking in the right tone. I think his tone, I think calling Barack Obama a "kid," he's a United States Senator, he's experienced, the people of Illinois elected him, and regardless of what kind of items on his resume, this is a man who has worked all his life. He has proven, he's been a college professor, I don't have to give Barack Obama a resume, I'm not for anyone at this point. But I think, for Bill Clinton to go out of his way to become a distraction to Hillary Clinton, and to launch the kind of attacks on Obama is just out of character for Bill Clinton. I think it's time that he helps Hillary talk about her message and not go down this road.

There are plenty of racist Republicans. However, they are not typically "holier-than-thou" about it. That's why I don't jump their case about it. Instead, Republicans prefer to pretend to be for "family values" while giving out hummers in airport johns. Oh, and claiming to be the party of "limited government" -- that's a laugh, too.

Tadowe,

I've been a registered Republican since the first Buchanan campaign. With this current lot, I'm ashamed to admit it.

Corky = racist

Leon = ..... Leon!

Sorry, I couldn't think of anything worse to be than you.

It is a well known fact that all us Democrats are racist bigots and that is why the black population of the US generally always vote for Demorats.
I get a kick out of the incredibly stupid comments by Republicans trying to say Dems are racists. Pathetic.

Hillary just needs to call another Hormonal Press Conference (TM) and explain, with lilting voice and teary eyes, that she loves all people equally.

That will put this all to rest.

"She is not too subtly playing the race card. She knows it is a powerful card when conversing with whites."

Obama is not going to bring race into the debate. There is a low point he will not cross. But the Clintons are not trying to reach white people with this cynical, patronizing message. They are scared that black people might come out for Obama in force strictly because he's black and it scares them.

Your comment in general seems out of whack with reality. White people don't "play the race card" in general. Any time a dispute with someone of another race comes up, white people are actually terrified that the other side will play the race card. There is no white version of Al Sharpton in this country. White race baiters are rightfully viewed as scum by the general public and targetted for criminal prosecution whenever possible.

Danni writes: "It is a well known fact that all us Democrats are racist bigots and that is why the black population of the US generally always vote for Demorats."

Blacks vote for Dems because they think it's the only way they can keep getting the gub'ment cheese. They vote for Dems for the same reason my dog comes running when it hears me turn on the can opener... for the promise of a free handout. If I teach my dog to use the can opener, it wouldn't need me anymore. Dems don't want blacks to rise up -- except for a few tokens who they can point at as a promise of possible future success for the whole masses -- because then blacks would have no need for Dems because they'd have jobs, have mortgages, own businesses, and they would not need to beg for the gub'ment cheese anymore. Until then, they will sit on the roof, amidst the floodwaters, and wait for the gub'ment helicopter to deliver the gub'ment cheese... and vote for Obama. Probably twice.

I think this maybe the issue that hands the pres. race over to the republicans. For the life of me I can't understand why the Clintons had to go this route knowing that Obama would have to retort. I wish this issue would go away because it is taking away from the true character of both of the candidates and it is making dems look pathetic. Plus, I think this kind of thing just opens the door for Bloomberg.

"Can't we all just get along"

OBAMA
"This is fascinating to me," he began. "I think what we saw this morning was why the American people are tired of Washington politicians and the games they play.

"Look, the, Sen. Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson," Obama said. "I didn't make the statement. I haven't remarked on it. And she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King's role in bringing about the civil rights act. She is free to explain that. But the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous."

He is right. The Clinton's have been playing the race card for so many years, they don't have a clue how to run a campaign without it. Especially when running against a black man.

"I wish this issue would go away because it is taking away from the true character of both of the candidates"

Who gets involved in petty crap like this and who stays out of it is a measure of character.

Ride_On? You're joking, right? She is so busy coming up with stupid nicknames, she has no time learn what Big Words like those mean. But be nice to her - her short bus takes a bumpy road and often doesn't reach its destination.

After Senator Obama won the Iowa vote, everyone in the Press were all impressed that an almost all white state would vote for an African American. I heard this on all of the Networks all of them.

After Senator Clinton won the New Hamphshire primary all of a sudden the Press, who had assured everyone that Senator Obama was going to win, found themselves with egg on there face so they had to explain how this could happen well almost before the Clinton celeration had ended the press had decided that it must be that the polling was faulty because the people lied to them.

So the Press decided, again on every Network I heard said the same thing, it must be RACISM. Tell the pollester one thing, then vote another way. This is where Race entered this process. Those of you on the right who are haveing an Orgasim over this tiff settle down. The Democrats know there history of the Civil Rights movement.

Because of the Civil Rights movement the South has been a solid voting block for the Republicians since the 1960. Prior to 1960's the South was solid Democrat territory. What changed the"CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION", thats what changed.

Leftists (and by extension Democrats) are so unconsciously racist and patronizing it's almost comical to watch.

They don't believe that blacks are capable of cutting it on their own so they concoct all sorts of programs (AA, quotas, etc) to level the playing field. They also perpetuate a sense of permanent victimhood.

Atty Dan Abrams exposes this media MLK race-baiting fiasco for what it is:

www.msnbc.msn.com

Dare you to watch the whole thing.

Rep. John Lewis (Ga.), a prominent Clinton supporter, raised criticism of Obama to a new level. In an extensive interview, Lewis, a King lieutenant and icon of the civil rights movement, called Obama "a friend" but added: "He is no Martin Luther King Jr. I knew Martin Luther King. I knew Bobby Kennedy. I knew President Kennedy. You need more than speech-making. You need someone who is prepared to provide bold leadership."

You need more than speech-making. You need someone who is prepared to provide bold leadership.

Kind of like that community work Obama did in Chicago, and nothing like sidling up with corporate lobbyist playing the polls.

I think a guest on NPR's "Talk of Nation" said it best today when she (I can't remember her name) said that there is a huge split between older blacks and the younger generation. Older blacks still think it is impossible for a black man to be elected and they feel they owe some kind of debt to politicians like the Clintons. Younger blacks see Obama and think to themselves, "that could be me."

Those who support Clinton in a sense support a republican prez in 08. Hillary has too high of negatives. She will lose and BAD. I know it's the hip thing for lesbians and other greedy dems to support her but they should know how evil it is to do so. The blood will be on your hands if she gets the nomination and we lose again.

Republican = racist

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Anyone who is a rebublican is a racist. What a statement.

You want to know what I think? I think the only true racists left in this country are either over 50 or part of a hate group. And tht goes for all races. I'm not just talking about white people when I say racist.

I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves for arguing about whether the republicans or democrats are the bigger racists. Anyone who believes either party is empty of racism is a fool.

What we can hope for is a day when we do not judge by color but by character, just like MLK said. And we are making progress. I just hope that one day we truly will arrive there.

The ones who constantly talk about race seem to be the minorities themselves. Constantly. They never seem to want to talk about anything else. It's brought up in every possible way in every discussion. Give it a break for God's sake.

CalifChris said: "The ones who constantly talk about race seem to be the minorities themselves. Constantly. They never seem to want to talk about anything else."

AGREED, CalifChris ! TRY THIS TEST:
Turn on your TV, mute the sound, and then surf channels until you see a talking head commentator who is black. Some panel show, some podium discussion, a Larry King type of guest montage, some meet the press type of thing. Whatever. Just make sure they are black. Now unmute the TV. Guaranteed they are talking about some race issue. If they are not talking about some race issue, then it must be ESPN.

Come to think of it, The Rev Jesse was all over ESPN this past Spring, whining about how the percentage of black players has diminished in favor of Hispanics taking the spots of black players in Major League Baseball over the past 10 years, so ESPN counts too...

What a Beautiful Day. I am giddy..The Democrats accusing each other of being racist..Looks like all that "vote for us or those racist whites will take away all the goodies we have promised for years but never delivered" has finally come back to haunt them..And to top it all of the most delightful was Bill Clinton "the first black president" forced to grovel before the throne of the great race oracle ala Trent Lott..Al Sharpton...Oh Happy day...

Today Tuesday the Jan 15, 2008. Ex president Clinton was on Al Sharpton program defending himself. He said his grandfather owned a food store and it was before food stamps, so his grandfather would give blacks food on credit.

"This is a racist issue".

Why....
Think for a second this sentence " Before food stamps". That means we now all depend on food stamps right?

SORRY BILL YOUR TIME IS OVER....

Guaranteed they are talking about some race issue. If they are not talking about some race issue, then it must be ESPN.

Your premise is stupid. Guests on talking head shows don't choose what to talk about. They answer what's posed to them. Even if your observation were true, it would only prove that the networks keep show black people off the air unless they want to talk about race.

But your observation's not true. Clarence Page, Roland Martin, Gwen Ifill, Lester Holt and many other black talking heads discuss numerous subjects outside of race.
