Gary Hart: The Democratic party is once again faced with a decision: whether to stay with the known, the familiar, and the "experienced" or whether to accept a new generation of leadership composed of those who have not had power or the experience of governing. If you believe, as I do, that the early 21st century is an age of huge transition -- of globalization, of information, of failed states, of climate change, of rising new powers, and so on -- then leadership hamstrung by old arrangements and commitments will not do.

What a great synopsis of the current Democratic dilemma: Forwards or Backwards? Future or Past? Hope or Reason?

For every reason the seasons change, so too must this nation if it is to move forward. It would be one thing if the current ruling generation had created a Great Society with a foundation for a bright future, but what they've done is nothing more than to burden our youth with the baggage of their own fears and incompetences. Its time to cut the cord and release the restraints of those holding back the dynacism and energy of the next generation.

Obama's extended message should be along the lines of "Moving Forward, Looking Backward or Standing Still".

Coincidentally, the Hart report on Terrorism (ok, it was called something else but he was on it) was released 9/10/01.
It identified threats from some guy named Osama Bin Laden....whatever happened to him?

whatever happened to him?

Nothing.

Monte I don't think there is any help for the other party this go around.

The only question repubs have to decide is who do they want to send to the slaughter to end their political carrer.

Given the weakness of the Repub field and the low aproval of this administration I suspect that the dem's could run a blind monkey and still land in the white house, Obama or Hillary is just overkill.

I'd prefer to get beyond the milquetoast Baby-Boomer "we sorta tried to do something about health care, we sorta tried to do something about the environment, and we sorta tried to do something about the trade imbalance, but it was hard work and we kind of got distracted." That's the Clinton legacy. Mediocre. Yeah, I'd vote for that over a continuation of the present. But, I'm sure not enthused about it.

If it's going to be McCain, fine. I'll vote for Hillary, for what it's worth, in the general, but I'm sure McCain will win. Meh. He could be okay. What worries me is that Clinton's personality will poison the party. We have some pretty vulnerable Democratic Representatives in this area. Obama might draw enough energy to help them hold their seats, whether or not he wins the presidency. Clinton raises enough hackles and inspires few enough new voters that I'm worried she'll lose the House and Senate, too, which will drag a McCain (or whichever Repub president) even further to the right.

"I suspect that the dem's could run a blind monkey and still land in the white house"
Damn, and the GOP were just about to announce a blind monkey named Bonzo Junior would be replacing Fred Thompson as the Reagan stand-in.

Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama. Still adds up to 16 years of a liberal in the WH.

Your full of shit!
Sincerely, Jeb Bush

Be still, my heart. This is almost too much to hope for. In sixteen years we could give health care to all children, pull the troops out of Iraq and maybe make a start toward undoing the damage of eight bushy years. It does my heart good just to ponder it. But mind you, if either as much as *look* like they're about to make *real* changes, the corporate boardrooms will issue two fatwas and find themselves another Sirhan Sirhan faster than Randy Moss on a slant pattern. herm

The last thing this country needs is a woman President. There's a word for people who trust their affairs to women: Infants.

I might consider voting for an exceptional woman, but Hillary Clinton is just some dumpy lawyer broad with delusions of grandeur. In a well-ordered society, she'd be working for the Cook County Public Defender's Office.

Bill Richardson would have been the smart choice. He's the only credible Democrat promising a swift end to the war in Iraq. I will never understand why the anti-war voters, Democrats and independents alike, didnt coalesce around his candidacy. Maybe its because most of the voters (in both parties) are idiots? That would explain Bush's 2004 re-election, and the Democratic nomination of John Kerry that same year, at any rate.

Either Hillary or Obama will defeat whoever the GOP eventually nominates. With their own all too willing help Bush has destroyed their short term future. No matter how they whine about and smear Hillary or Obama this inescapable fact just won't go away before next November. Rather like Bush himself, though we have to wait till next January to rid ourselves of him.

Have any of you heard about widespread voter fraud due to electronic Diebold voting machines?

If it is so widespread, then how come no one has heard about it? You would think that if the Republicans are guilty of voter fraud, the MSM would be broadcasting this news as the lead story. On the other hand, if it's the Democrats who are the perpetrators, then the MSM would tend to look the other way. So, if there is widespread voter fraud, then it's probably happening on the Democrat side of the aisle.

Wow. Rough divorce?

Unless she's Maggie Thatcher, 'natch

Didn't pass the bar, didja?

If Obama wins he'll be a 4 year flop like Carter. Horrible Hillary could last 8 byt that will be the end of the dems for awhile.

id just settle for anybody but bush or clinton i think this country has had enuff of those two families for awhile

northguy:

The second of those two combinations might just make for a sixteen-year run. Hillary as Prez first, then a better-trained, better-vetted Obama might extend the Dems' streak.

But Obama first means a four-year debacle, and the Rethugs roaring back. He does not have any experience with- or around- really big international issues and playas. He'll be toast before his Presidency is eighteen months old.
