Pakistan Backs Off Bhutto Death Theory

Pakistan's Interior Ministry backtracked Tuesday on its statement that Benazir Bhutto died because she hit her head on a sunroof latch during a shooting and bomb attack.

Murder scene Hosed Down within Hours

With rumors of government complicity in Benazir Bhutto's assassination rife throughout Pakistan, the country's stability may depend on the absolute transparencey of the investigation into the murder. But a constantly evolving and sometimes contradictory explanation of the events by Pakistani investigators has only clouded the issue. Meanwhile, her husband and her supporters are asking for a United Nations-led inquiry into her death, something Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is unlikely to accede to. But even if Musharraf were to agree, there is very little for international forensics experts to investigate.

Within hours of the murder, there were scenes of network reporters talking about a "crime scene" with Pakistanis dancing all around. No tape, no attempt to seal off, nothing, zip, zero, zilch. And there was even one televised story (sorry, a la BLT, don't recall the network) with a reporter holding a bullet and saying it had "just" been discovered at the scene.

If it's a coverup, it's also a fuckup.

Oh, sorry, there's a term of art that fits: clusterfuck.

I have always thought of Clusterfucks as unintended.

This one however seems to almost have been orchestrated.

Perhaps not the murder itself but beyond reasonable doubt the response to the murder.

We have no idea who killed her and we won't know. It could have been any of the resistance groups, Musharraf or even the US or Israel. Everybody has something to gain by killing her.

What's interesting is that she was riding in an armored car. As I understand it, she popped her head above the sun roof for a very short time when she was popped. It's like the whole thing was planned in advance. How did they know she would do that? Or where she would do it? Maybe there were assassins along the route?

And well he should. There are a lot of unanswered questions in her assassiantion -- and one particularly important question -- why Bhutto earlier had claimed that bin Ladin is already dead.

Why is the cause of death being a collision with the sun roof, a gunshot wound, shrapnel, or the result of an explosion, of any significance.

Insofar as Ray's speculation is concerned, it is baseless. After all, there is as much evidence that it was Ray or Buffalo Bob, who orchestrated the assassination. Or perhaps it was extraterrestrials, or Kenyans?

If the two "mystery men" are identified, it might provide a clue as to who was behind the assassination.

Unless, however, those behind the "plot" are discovered, the facts on the ground are such that it just might be useful to justify a campaign of extermination in the Northwest tribal areas. This would deprive al-Qaeda elements of havens and bases from which to launch attacks into Afghanistan, and from which to stir up trouble domestically in Pakistan. Let's hope there is a massive offensive, and the indigent tribesmen are eliminated
