Tariq Ali: Even those of us sharply critical of Benazir Bhutto's behaviour and policies -- both while she was in office and more recently -- are stunned and angered by her death. Indignation and fear stalk the country once again. An odd coexistence of military despotism and anarchy created the conditions leading to her assassination in Rawalpindi yesterday. In the past, military rule was designed to preserve order -- and did so for a few years. No longer. Today it creates disorder and promotes lawlessness.

She would agree that land reforms, mass education programmes, a health service and an independent foreign policy were positive constructive aims and crucial if the country was to be saved from the vultures in and out of uniform. Her constituency was the poor, and she was proud of the fact.

She changed again after becoming prime minister. In the early days, we would argue and in response to my numerous complaints - all she would say was that the world had changed. She couldn't be on the "wrong side" of history. And so, like many others, she made her peace with Washington. It was this that finally led to the deal with Musharraf and her return home after more than a decade in exile. On a number of occasions she told me that she did not fear death. It was one of the dangers of playing politics in Pakistan.

Interesting article.

Tariq Ali writes a fairly even handed and somber reflection on the life and Benazir Bhutto detailing how the death of the members of her family have in many ways parallelled the violent history of her country.

In point of fact, Spud suspects very strongly that no matter who actually did the deed, his bullets were bought by Mushy on some level or another.

Wot other explanation can there be? She had already been Prime Minister twice. She wanted Mushy's job and he wasn't about to let her have it. Either his confidence in the upcoming fake elections had eroded or he feared the aftermath of stealing the election and then having to confront an angry populace afterwords. Too many eyes of the world are on Pakistan at present to return to the bad old days of massive repression and imprisonments and disappearances and torture like before.

This bloody solution was actually pretty "neat" from Mushy's perspective thinks Spud.

Spud, of course, now wonders wot the future holds fer this troubled land.

So Angry, so corrupt and with nukes.

Yum! /snark>

Be Well.

"Despotism"

YEAH!

Well that's just what $150 million in US tax Dollars a month buys you in Bush World these days!

But it was our despot, so it's not like anything really bad happened.

spud its easy to say all this from here

but in pakistan
its a different story

the military doesn't have the power to police

and police is what the tribal areas need

but the tribal areas can't get police until the military goes in and takes it over

again easier said then done

its like trying to eliminate gangs from L.A.

Musharraf is still pro western
and anti terrorist
even if he is considered a despot

but even still

he's still extremely popular in pakistan
for all his despotism

he's still extremely popular in pakistan
for all his despotism

Before Bhutto died, I read Osama has a positive rating in Pakistan of 48%, Bush is in the teens and Mushi in single digits.
He's a sunni dictator kept in power by a western-bankrolled military and fake elections.
Sort of like Saddam H., only with real WMD and real links to al queda.

dude
my family is from pakistan
i was there last year
my father was there durring the emergency rule

its not like saddam in the least bit

except from media and polling persectives
which doesn't mean anything

the avg person if you ask them what they think of thought of emergency rule
the typical answer given to my father was "the only time you see evidence of emergency rule is when you turn on the tv."

Klifferd, Thanks for the first-hand assessment .

Watching and reading about the news, it seems that the situation in Pakistan could lead to a military coup by al-qaeda/taliban sympathizers in the army leadership.

I wouldn't be surprised if Musharaf is assassinated or forced into exile real soon.

Any thoughts on that?

well the top dogs are all pro musharraf and the new guy he has appointed as his replacement

musharraf doesn't make bold moves by addressing outdoor live crowds that have not been screened sort of like the procedures political leaders in america have done.

Not since JFK do politicians drive around in motorcades here in the USA.

A coup within the pakistani military is highly unlikely. The leaders within are highly nationalistic. And the AQ and Taliban views are at a stark contrast with the ideology of the pakistani military.

Speaking to relatives in the military i have seen a love of Pakistan and secularism (and hatred of the polarizing Mullah's).
In fact my grandfather is super pro musarraf and he has had 3 of his children in the pakistani military. (army and air force)

I wouldn't be surprised if Musharaf is assassinated or forced into exile real soon.

Any thoughts on that?

YEAH!

Why would AQ kill one of its own leaders?

That's almost as silly as saying they want to kill Bush (their highest tier advocate after all)!
It's not every day you get the most powerful man in the world to follow you and repeat your agenda verbatim you know!

Without the teamwork between Musharaf and The Bush Cult, AQ would have been rendered impotent and insignificant years ago!

Musharraf just handed off control of the military to Gen. Kiyani, a western educated and U.S. military trained general. He's considered pragmatic and pro-western. I don't think he's going to allow the Pakistani military to get out of hand. At least I hope not for the Pakistani's sake.

The following substance were found in her wound:

Cu-Sn-Sb-Pb

You figure it out.

As another one from Pakistan and with friends and family in the military, I can confirm all of what Klifferd is saying.

And no, there will be no military coup. That is impossible.

again easier said then done

its like trying to eliminate gangs from L.A.

Spud appreciates the perspective.

Hey Kliff have you met Tosser yet?

Tosser is in Pakistan, been around a while now.

Kliff is in the US and has a rawkin' band!

Military coup?

Umm, Spud doesn't think it too bloody likely.

Who are the PPP gonna put up now to challenge Mushy and his bent election now who will have even the chance of a snowflake in hell of winning even if the elections are delayed and has been posited?

As far as Mushy is concerned Bhutto's death does nothing but consolidate his power.

Spud found this interesting on the recent Wiki page on the assasination...

A Times (UK) article names al-Qaeda- and Taliban-backed warlords based in Waziristan and other areas of northwestern Pakistan as likely suspects, but also points to elements within the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence with close ties to Islamists as equally likely to have been behind the killing. The article also claims that President Musharraf is unlikely to have ordered the assassination.[43] However, Bhutto herself had emailed Mark Siegel, her U.S. spokesman, lobbyist and friend, in October 2007, saying that because the Musharraf government was not providing adequate security, she would hold Musharraf responsible if she was killed.[44][45] Mark Siegel had forwarded this email to Wolf Blitzer of CNN with instructions he (Blitzer) publish the email only in the event of Bhutto's death

Wot a shit-storm, eh?

Be Well.

PPP are thinking of getting Bhutto's hubby to lead the party. LOL

Bhutto's husband... Asif Ali Zardari... was once known as "Mr.Thirty Percent". This was the standard rate of bribes and kickbacks he would charge... or else he would see to it you went broke.

This guy was a failed businessman before he married Bhutto.

How did he come to marry Bhutto? That is where "the blow-job tape" come in.

In her Oxford days, Bhutto was video giving a blowjob to some white dude. This video was obtained, at great cost, by Zardari's dad, who blackmailed Bhutto into marrying his son.

This tape was later stolen by Bhutto's brother, Murtaza, who gloated to Zardari that his days as husband of Prime Minister were numbered.

To rub it in, he got his goons to shave Zardari's head (we remember him wearing a cap and asking "whats wrong with him?") to humiliate him.

Zardari and Bhutto had Murtaza shot dead 2 days later.

Nobody knows who has the BJ tape now.
-----------

Anyway, the PPP has been decapitated. It was created by the Bhuttos and they didn't ever tolerate party elections. So it was a family run party (imagine the Democrat party with Clinton as leader for life).

They don't really have anyone else.

What will happen is, they will break up into spinter groups. That would be good.
--------------

The PML-Q will win this election easy. They already run Pak. The MQM would win the south and take Karachi and be partners.
--------------

Stupid woman had a Mushi fixation. She would get a cold and blame it on Mushi. So screw Blitzer and his email. LOL

Forsoothe, Tosser. It's good the "bitch" is dead, as you opined. It's much better that our guy Mushy abrogated all constitutional gov't in favor of a de facto military dictatorship for life.

Where is Boca when a a civil conversation is needed?

"Mr.Thirty Percent"

...wasn't it "Mr. Ten Percent" last night?

Tosser, the jig is up.

Your nose is growing.

LOL! Betelg....you rang???? I swear I didn't see your post til afterward.

Boca-
No need. I fear I might pollute the discussion regarding the dead "Bitch" with impolite language.

Carry on.

Where tosser gets his news

64.233.167.104

Really. Do carry on. I've got to go. Enjoy...

So it was a family run party (imagine the Democrat party with Clinton as leader for life). So it was a family run party (imagine the Democrat party with Clinton as leader for life).

TOSSER

More like Rove/Bush's attempt to create a permanent Republican majority by using all kinds of dirty tricks ranging from using the Justice Dept. to persecute political opponents, or starting a war the year before the 2004 elections so Bush the Idiot could be a 'War President" going into the election.

Don't get all bent about it....I was just trying to draw out more of his BS...Kinda figgered attacking him wouldn't help....sorry if I offended. We both know he's full of crud. I wanted to see how much rope he would throw out.

Boca-
Enough for you to slip around my throat...

Well, take your ball and go home then.

You were being an ass and in need of a bitch slap.

Yes double entendre intended.

And you were making the same points that I was, except for being a jack-off about it.

Bocaink:

Benazir was PM *twice*.

During her first term, hubby was known as "Mr.Ten Percent".

During her second term, his rate went up and we called him "Mr.Thirty Percent".

Now we were all set to call him Mr.90%.

But now The Whore of the East (this is what people called her after she re-released her book "Daughter of the East") is dead.

Zardari's cash cow is gone. How will he feed himself? Guess now he will have to spend some of the 1.5 Billion dollars he and his wife stole. LOL

Get over it,

And when Mooshie figures out what to do with the 12 billion he stole from the US, get back to me.

It sure isn't stopping "Al-Queda" in Pakistan.

BTW: kinda funny she subtly slid in that Osama was murdered in a Nov. 3rd interview with David Frost.

hummm.....kinda makes Mooshie look even worse, almost, dare I say, complicit?????

Sure seems like you are going out of your way to destroy her credibility.

I'm wondering who the real "Whore of the East" is, I don't think it was Bhutto...

You see, here in "AMEREEEEKA," our blowhards have such a thing called a "Clinton Deflection."

The rhetoric sounds awfully familiar.

Your nose is long.

Mushi stole 12 billion *from the US*.

THAT is not a crime! You are rich guys and your Govt. keeps losing money all over the place anyway.

Stealing 1.5 Billion from your own people, IS a crime.

Honestly... some people...

Just because Bhutto gave you a hard-on in your college days, doesn't mean you can't Google/Wiki and look up her crap.

Fortunately, others here can.. and have.

LOL

Selfabuser Whackfaster says, "Mushi stole 12 billion *from the US*. THAT is not a crime! You are rich guys and your Govt. keeps losing money all over the place anyway."

The victim is at fault for being rich. And, this hairy-palmed Paki thinks it is justified.

"Stealing 1.5 Billion from your own people, IS a crime."

However, if it is "his" money, the criminal deserves to be blown up by a terrorist as a human sacrifice to the, apparently bloodthirsty, god: Allah.

And ... the Lefties want to be the rich victim responsible for getting robbed and believe apologists for terrorists foreigners in order to hold Bush responsible ...

... the puling traitors ...

Tadpole...

Never mind. You are a lost cause.
