Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The US Senate is holding special one man sessions throughout Christmas and the New Year to prevent President George W. Bush from making appointments without the approval of the Democratic majority. With the bang of a gavel, Democratic Senator Jim Webb declared the first session open on Sunday morning before closing it seconds later, without any of his colleagues present in the hall.

As long as they remember what goes around comes around....who cares?

American1st, probably, but if you've been paying attention to the first six years of the 21st century, I think you'd agree this *is* payback for the Repub majorities.

Evashogouki...if the Dems and Repubs would both go to the center, instead of their extreme edges, the country would be a lot better off...until then,it's politics as usual....

Assuming the general populace is paying attention to this stunt, does anyone really believe this instills faith and confidence in the Dems as a party of leadership and problem solving?

Like much of what constitutes politics from both parties, this is but another petty "gotcha." It exhibits neither leadership or any sort of desire to work together to accomplish the peoples' business.

And we wonder why Congress is held in such low esteem.

"Assuming the general populace is paying attention to this stunt, does anyone really believe this instills faith and confidence in the Dems as a party of leadership and problem solving?"

It does for me, considering some of the previous recess appointments. But I'll grant you, its a drop in the bucket next to what the leadership should have been doing over the past year.

With his signing statements, his cronyism and his previous recess appointments Bush has repeatedly shown utter contempt for democracy. It's a pity that it had to come to this but what other way is there to stop him ignoring the spirit of the law and the constitution and perverting them to his own narrow advantage?

When Republicans say it's no wonder Congress is held in low esteem it's just to deflect attention from the even lower esteem that most of the country has for Bush and Cheney.

"When Republicans say it's no wonder Congress is held in low esteem it's just to deflect attention from the even lower esteem that most of the country has for Bush and Cheney." BLUE

I think there's a grain of truth to your retort. Still, two wrongs don't make a right.

If you look at approval ratings I think you'll see Dubya (not sure about Cheney's) doing better than Congress. But again, neither is exactly setting the world on fire.

So, when someone speaks of Congress' low approval, do you feel you're on good ground to deflect toward Bush? It would seem that's exactly what you're accusing your opposition of doing?

Ooey, Congress' low esteem is due mostly to its in ability, or sheer mean refusal, to say no to the Bushling, his war and other gross priorities. We are a week from the year in which we will replace the Bushling and perhaps lead the nation and the world out of surely the grimmest period in its history. Merry ex-muss and a Grrrrreat 2008 to Ooey, Bowa, BLT, Sniper, Vernon, Johnson, RisR and their ilk (some are probably the same person) too. herm

"Assuming the general populace is paying attention to this stunt, does anyone really believe this instills faith and confidence in the Dems as a party of leadership and problem solving?"

Absolutely. It's one of the few things they've done to lead in the solving of the problem of wacked recess appointments.

Maybe if the tables were turned, you'd see it as more of a power play by the republicans?

What a bunch of cry babies.

I don't think this is a stunt. It is a carefully considered maneuver to prevent an out of control fool from making another bolton.

I think it is great that Congress finally has the balls to piss in chimpy's corn flakes!!!! It is probably too late to impeach to cretin but this is one way to limit the damage his last year will inflict on us all.

I"m 100% behind the Democratic Party on this.

Bush uses an outdated method of avoiding the legislative branch and the Senate stops the underhanded subversion of intent.

Problem solved!

Finally the Dems do something right. For the last six years GWB and Co. have been doing an end run around the Constitutional system of checks and balances. That bullshit of recess appointments was exploited by the GOP to almost criminal lengths. Three cheers for Harry Reid and Co. for ending it.

I for one will be glad when this ridiculous retard has retired to his wretched ranch.

The Dems have been mostly spineless for the past year, but I support them on this completely.

The world's grimmest period?

I guess you think things are worse today than, say ....

generations of plague across Europe
the mini-ice-age 500 years ago
billions of locust wiping out crops for a decade at a time
Global depression in the 1930s
mass starvations in Ukraine, China, Africa
the Rape of Nanking
Global warfare
The Cold War
polio, smallpox, influenza pandemics
just to name a few.

Now I see your point. Petty political pissing in D.C. is far worse. As is the inability of the Left to develop any coherent theme since about 1972 (other than 'we're not Republicans!')

And Merry Christmas to you, too! He is Born!

He is Born!

Congratulations!
Here's a cigar.
No, smoke it.

If the Dems did more of this kind of thing, and got publicity for it, their approval rating would climb like St. Nick going up the chimmney. Every time they thumb their (sniffy, liberal) noses at Dumbya, they go up a tick.

That's what the Repubs don't understand. And that's a goooood thing.

I hope, beyond hope, that this is a trend that will continue right through 2008, right up to November.

the only thing more typical to this is the response from the DR liberal posse........
you celebrate this now.......lets wait and when or IF a dem is pres........and it happens like this from the other side.........HOLY SHIT.......you will say it was the end of the republic....
now if they put forth legislation that did away with ANY PRES from doing this.........hell......we might all agree...........but no......libs arent interested in that sort of thing......

the recess appointment rule was intended for emergencies when the senate was in recess and action was needed immediately not as a way of circumventing normal procedures. In case people forgot back only a 100 years ago t would take days for many senators to get to Washington even in the case of emergency. Go back 150 years you are looking at weeks considering a messenger needed to be sent.

And also the Democratic Congress is unable to do anything since they don't have anough votes to override Bush's veto. It has nothing to do with their intentions or plans.

i support stopping one man from skipping past congrssional approval to install recess appointments, no matter what party is trying to do it

And also the Democratic Congress is unable to do anything since they don't have anough votes to override Bush's veto. It has nothing to do with their intentions or plans.

The mantra of the do-nothing apologists. Why don't you say something like "the sun was in my eyes," or "the dog ate my homework."

The Congress of the United States - totally useless.

No Recess appointments fer Boy George?

Awww, but Dumbya was supposed to meet Jeffy Gannon under the monkeybars at recess!

The Dems have been mostly spineless for the past year, but I support them on this completely.

~The Barber of Samville!

Agreed.

Be Well.

It exhibits neither leadership or any sort of desire to work together to accomplish the peoples' business.

NO, it exhibits the Democrats desire to block at least SOME bad governance that the president has already demonstrated a proclivity towards.

Why do the Republicans hate America and its way of life?
The Republicans have driven our children into debt, caused the death of almost 4000 US men and women, and untold thousands of Iraqis, made a mockery of the Constitution, violated the laws of the country and thumbed its nose at the Congress.

Time for a big change in the good old US of A.

Vote Democrat in all things and imprison Bush and his hirlings.

Merry Christmas - the Toad

"The mantra of the do-nothing apologists. Why don't you say something like "the sun was in my eyes," or "the dog ate my homework.""

Fucktard kindly read the constitution. It is not possible for congress to do shit if a) they can't break a fillibuster and more improtantly b) they don't have 2/3 votes to override a presdiential veto.

It' the facts. Get a fucking clue.

TOAD

"Why do the Republicans hate America and its way of life?

Let's be clear. Not all Republicans hate America and it's way of life . . just the neo-cons.

And I wouldn't even call it hate. It's more like they consider America somewhat of an obstacle in the path of achieving an objective.

When you have time, Google a little treaties called "Project for a New American Century (PNAC) which was put together in 1997 by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc.

The mantra for PNAC is clearly spelled out. World domination by military force. A world coup, so to speak.

It's a bit of a read, with all it's accompanying letters and documents, but once done you'll not have any more questions about what appears to be the idiocy of George Bush.

Most of us here on the Retort have already studied this document and are well aware of what's in store for this country should we, as a country, allow the neo-cons to install a succession of their own kind in the White House.

There's also a PNAC primer if you're a little short on time or patience to read the entire document.

Considering the Senate's approval of most of Bush's appointees who have gone through the normal advise and consent process it is pretty obvious that the action the Senate is taking now is intended to prevent the appointment of any more lunatics like Bolton not to prevent reasonably qualified people from being appointed.

Democrats are quitters and pussies, cheerio, and people like you are their supporters. You simply quit and go home when the going gets tough. Let's do nothing and blame it on Bush. Good strategy cheerio, you verbal weakling. Give up the fight before it starts. This election vote cheerio.

I just love how these right winger Bushites love to deflect blame away from Dubya and onto ANYONE and EVERYONE but Dubya. wassamatter Bushites Can't accept responsibility for the one who is responsible hmmmmmmmmmmm too fucking funny.

Larry Mohr

Yeah, the pussy Dems went home for Christmas to blame Bush for Bush's PNAC policies and - what's that? They're not going home for their holiday recess? Aww, crap! Ain't this some chickenshit!

'Pussies and quitters'. That is an apt description of Nixon surrendering to North Vietnam and Reagan hightailing it out of Beirut.
