The Des Moines Register's editorial board has endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton for the 2008 Iowa caucuses, calling them the candidates it believes are most competent and ready to lead.

SOMEONE ALERT HOMELAND SECURITY!!!!!!

The big bad mean men of Iowa will storm the Des Moines Register and destroy the place.

As you may have heard, Iowa has never elected a woman to statewide office.

Rollback the sexists!!!

Sincerely,
Corky

Go Hillary!

Better choices that one might have anticipated.

Regards,
etc.

Anyone else see a problem with endorsing Mccain for being steadfast in his views, and then picking Hillary on the Dem side?

I'm not a big fan of Mccain because of his staunch support of the Iraq war (I swear the man plans on winning Vietnam this time around)... But other wise I'll take him over Giuliani or Huckabee.

As for Hillary, I can only disagree with her as far as I disagree with a standard Democratic domestic policy or with the standard political hack I've come to despise, otherwise I can't lock her down on any specific issues to disagree with her on.

WHY is this getting foot high headlines on here?
This paper was the same rag that sponsored the Democrat debate and wouldn't let Kucinich participate on some technicality. McCain? Hardly.

Because this is a major endorsement in Iowa, Chris.

And a rational, logical one at that.

"The choice, then, comes down to preparedness: Who is best prepared to confront the enormous challenges the nation faces -- from ending the Iraq war to shoring up America's middle class to confronting global climate change?

The job requires a president who not only understands the changes needed to move the country forward but also possesses the discipline and skill to navigate the reality of the resistant Washington power structure to get things done.

That candidate is New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

From working for children's rights as a young lawyer, to meeting with leaders around the world as first lady, to emerging as an effective legislator in her service as a senator, every stage of her life has prepared her for the presidency"

I also like John McCain btw, above any of the Repubes.

Must be a slow news day.

The Register endorsement is a big deal in Iowa. It's one of the last events that could move polls prior to the caucus. I thought Edwards or Biden would win it.

It's a major endorsement for an important primary.

For the rabid politico its a big enough headline..

Just wish they had supported Paul/Obama/Kucinich/Biden (hmm...I just listed 3 dems and 1 repub...Theres something freudian there that requires further investigation)

I thought Edwards or Obama would win it, but it is big news for Clinton when she needed it.

We'll see. The 2.5 week 'Christmas break' (no debates, and the editorial picks this early) give Clinton plenty more opportunity to stumble through another couple of badly scripted "staffer faux pas".

Why is this a headline?

Oorporate shills are the heart of our fake Democracy. This explains the Des Moines Register completely.

It also explains the locking out of independent thinking candidates, such as Kucinich, Gravel, and of course Paul.

Where is the huge headline for the Boston Globe endorsement of McCain and Obama?

Here is part of how the LA Times is covering the story.

"Typically, because of its liberal bent, the Register's editorial approval carries more weight with Iowa's Democratic voters. Some 40% of Iowa Republican caucus-goers are evangelical Christians and polls indicate they are favoring Mike Huckabee."

They quote from the Register:

"Readiness to lead sets her apart from a constellation of possible stars in her party, particularly Barack Obama, who also demonstrates the potential to be a fine president. When Obama speaks before a crowd, he can be more inspirational than Clinton. Yet, with his relative inexperience, it's hard to feel as confident he could accomplish the daunting agenda that lies ahead."

Sounds like those grapes are getting little sour around here.

They'll turn into whine soon then.

a little

Neither of those choices are good for the country.

The main reason Hilary's in the running at all is that it's the only way to get Bill back into office in some capacity.

Fact is, Clinton and Reagan were unarguably the 2 most effective presidents in the last, let's see... 39 years? I think you'd have to go back to LBJ to get an argument on either one, and if you're a Nixon apologist - OK, fine, 34 years.

That alone is carrying Hilary Clinton, and it's sad. It seems our only hope is to bring back the one guy living who we know for sure can do the job -- even in an as yet undefined capacity.

this is bullshit. why should a paper in Iowa decide who I can vote for. DEMOCRACY MY ASS!!!!!
Fuck Iowa, Clinton, ABC, NBC,ABC, FOX and Walt Disney.
Fuck everything.
And Santa too.

GOD BLESS REBELLION

Here is Atlantic Monthy's Marc Ambinder's take.

"A Few Points About the Register Endorsement
15 Dec 2007 09:01 pm

Full Clinton editorial here.

Full McCain editorial here.

(1) It's a major boost for Clinton. And for her campaign staff, who've need some good news. Many Democrats in Iowa unquestionably consult the Register's editorial voice before deciding whom to vote for.

(2) The Register endorses Clinton's theme: inspiration is nice, but in order to get things done, you need experience.

(following from the Register)

"In the Senate, she has earned a reputation as a workhorse who does not seek the limelight. She honed knowledge of defense on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

She has proactively served rural and urban New York and worked in the national interest, strengthening the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Clinton is tough. Tested by rough politics and personal trials, she's demonstrated strength, resolve and resilience.

Can she inspire the nation? Clinton is still criticized in some quarters as being too guarded and calculating. (As president, when she makes a mistake, she should just say so.)

Indeed, Obama, her chief rival, inspired our imaginations. But it was Clinton who inspired our confidence. Each time we met, she impressed us with her knowledge and her competence."

(3) The Obama campaign really wanted this endorsement, although they were not terribly sanguine about their chances to get it.

(4) The endorsement of McCain is a surprise, given that he has all but written off Iowa. Still -- it says something about the Register's view of the rest of the field. (The Register's endorsement won't have too much impact with Republicans).

"Yet, for all their accomplishments on smaller stages, none can offer the tested leadership, in matters foreign and domestic, of Sen. John McCain of Arizona. McCain is most ready to lead America in a complex and dangerous world and to rebuild trust at home and abroad by inspiring confidence in his leadership. In an era of instant celebrity, we sometimes forget the real heroes in our midst."

Do endorsements really matter?

What kind of person is it that either could be swayed by an endorsement to switch their vote, or be influenced to vote a certain way if they were undecided. I don't get it.

It's the same question regarding celebrities. Does it really matter if celebrity x helps out in y's campaign?

Boston Globe endorse Obama and MCCAIN, not Romney. Interesting.

Member,

Unlike most celebreties, these editorial endorsements include their well thought out and sometimes respected rationals for their endorsements.

Undecided people sometimes look to them for good reasons to support particular candidates

"In an era of instant celebrity, we sometimes forget the real heroes in our midst."

Said about McCain in the Repub race, but true in the Dem race, too. Politically speaking, of course.

(OK, I'll stop now)

Geez Cork,

There are so many things that could be said to follow that, and I know that your worship of she that is Clinton is something of DR legend. But...

Geez Cork..

If you think the Clintons are not about as close as we get to "heroes" in the Dem Party, or that Obama with his couple of years in the Senate isn't "instant celebrity", then I guess we just disagree.

Or that the Globe's "intuition" is more needed in a President than the Register's "experience".

Wot?

The three lady editors picked Hill?

Quelle Shock!
Quelle suprise!!

These are the same schnooks who rejected Dennis Kucinich from the debate aint it?

'Nuff freakin sed!

Be Well.

Cork, Lets explore "experience" for a moment. As that seems to be Hillary's campaign highlight(at the moment).

I'm curious, If Biden was Hillary's major contender instead of Obama, what would the spin be?

Would there be a whole new "Washington Outsider" campaign, or would you try and go toe to toe with Joe on Washington/Foreign Policy experience?

The Register endorsement is a big deal in Iowa. It's one of the last events that could move polls prior to the caucus. I thought Edwards or Biden would win it.

I wouldn't mind if either of them won it either. Of the Democrats running for President I've decided the one who is the best guy in the top Dem candidates who have a real chance of winning is John Edwards. I like him the best of all of the Democrat candidates and will probably vote for him over any of the top running Republicans (who are all Bush-lite). I like Republican Duncan Hunter the best if I had to pick a Republican but the Repub elites would never let him win.

Still, Edwards is very weak (as are all the Dem candidates) on the very real issue of illegal immigration and that just might be the one thing that tilts the prez back to the Republicans' corner. The Dems who are running just don't seem to get it. Illegal immigration (by the millions into this country within the last 10 years or so) has played a detrimental part in every aspect of our society (schools, hospitals closing down, wage supression, crime, etc.). And now you see this issue being taken up in almost every state -- as shown by the very strict statewide law Oklahoma passed last month and the laws in Hazelton, PA -- hardly two border states. Illegal immigration is one of the top 3-4 biggest concerns this election year. Those are facts. People do not want amnesty -- or at least any discussion about the millions who are here now -- until that border is secured with a REAL fence, not some virtual crap that does nothing (like the kind Bush wants) and our immigration laws start being enforced.

I'd hate to see the Dems lose the White House (and we get stuck with one of Bush's picks like Romeny or Rudy) because the Dem candidates have their heads up their butts on the illegal immigration issue and I don't know why the Dems have to cater to non-citizens instead of the majority of U.S. citizens when U.S. citizens have said time and again they want a stop to all this illegal immigration. However, I don't believe any of the top running Republicans will do anything either as they are Bush-type Republicans.

So, with all that said -- my vote will go to John Edwards. Of all the issues concerning regular Americans, he's the best guy for us.

I think Joe Biden is extremely bright and experienced and I would make him Sec. of State or Sec. of Defense in a New York minute if I were President.

Hillary is Bush-lite.
She is part of "the machine" working to destroy our nation in order to bring in globalism and the NAU. She will do exactly what hubby Bill "NAFTA" Clinton and the extreme corporatist Bush tell her to do. Either Hillary or Romney will win. They have been "pre-selected" already to be the two from either party who will conduct "business as usual" for Bush and the globalists for whom Bush works.

tough times ahead if we don't take our country back

Wow, I forgot McCain was even running!

so hillary has the des moines regiatar.......WOOOO

now iowa is important and all, but please.....

hillary and obama and edwards all want us to elect them to the white house where they would have to meet and hopefuly 'take down' ahmadinijan and putin and chavez and castro and china...
but these people are too limpdick and pussys and down right SCARED to face mike wallace on fox news sunday.....what a bunch of weeny bullshit artists.

follow up,,,,,,edwards was on cbs and now abc and is supposed to be on the Clinton News Network later today.........and would someone please tell his campaign that I have just turned the station.
george lopez has as much chance as being pres as edwards does.....and he is a whole lot funnier...

as an iowan, I can assure everyone that mccain is going nowhere. the register is a horrible paper, if it wasn't for waiting rooms (im in one now on my phone) there would be like 10 subs

Speaking from Iowa, most of us outside Des Moines regard the endorsement of the Register about as significant as winning 10th place in a grade school spelling bee.

It's nice to see McCain get a boost. The guy is a hawk but with him as president I doubt we'd have undertaken the Iraq adventure.

-I'm curious, If Biden was Hillary's major contender instead of Obama, what would the spin be?

I don't know, but I assume it would be the same, record vs record, policy vs policy, personality vs personality.

I love Joe Biden, and personally I could put up with his past penchant for political foot in mouth disease, but I would not expect for that to stop happening.

WHAT interests me is that the biggest question in the Dem primary on Sat was the hard sought after and politically meaningful endorsement of the DMR, which had Obama OR Edwards gotten it would have been headline news....

has on Sunday become a very reluctant mention in the MSM because Clinton got it.

The MSM can hear their cash registers clinking loudly only when there is bad news for the national front runner, not when there is good.

Cry for us Corky

Great argument, LL.

Best I've ever seen you make, actually.

Whoever you are.

Wow, that must actually matter for brain dead morons who let the MSM decide who they are going to vote for.

For the rest of us, RP is the man!
